best song ever, of course. the music is like pop slint, and is thusly better than anything slint ever recorded (even though slint are actually quite good). it's a cliched lyric for sure, but it dabbles in the cliches more amusingly than most. and that deadpan delivery! i heard it for the first time in many moons tonight, one of the extra tracks my friend taped at the end of the gay dad album he was recording for me.

classic!!!!

oh, snap!

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Except he's right.

I'm totally getting into early to mid 90s guitar pop singles. I totally want to buy The Buzz.

David Allen (David Allen), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic, in a cheesy I liked that when I was a teenager kind of way.

They didn't play it live when I saw them though - said they didn't know all the lyrics. They did ask if anyone wanted to 'sing' it, but no-one did.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

what makes it a novelty?

purple patch (electricsound), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

(two girls talking over one another)
there comes a time in every girl's life when she's really got to ask herself: "Is she ready to be going steady?"
there comes a time where she's got to ask herself:
"steady or not? Do u really want to be johnnny's steady?"
Well, first of all, lets see if dating this one boy Johnny......

Three important rules for breaking up
Don't put off breaking up when you know you want to
Prolonging the situation only makes it worse
Tell him honestly, simply, kindly, but firmly
Don't make a big production
Don't make up an elaborate story
This will help you avoid a big tear jerking scene
If you wanna date other people say so
Be prepared for the boy to feel hurt and rejected
Even if you've gone together for only a short time,
And haven't been too serious,
There's still a feeling of rejection
When someone says she preferres the company of others
To your exclusive company,
But if you're honest, and direct,
And avoid making a flowery emotional speech when you brake the news,
The boy will respect you for your frankness,
And honestly he'll apeciate the kind of straight foward manner
In which you told him your decision
Unless he's a real jerk or a cry baby you will remain friends

I'm head of the class
I'm popular
I'm a quarter back
I'm popular
My mom says I'm a catch
I'm popular
I'm never last picked
I got a cheerleader chick

Being attractive is the most important thing there is
If you wanna catch the biggest fish in your pond
You have to be as attractive as possible
Make sure to keep your hair spotless and clean
Wash it at least every two weeks
Once every two weeks
And if you see Johnny football hero in the hall
Tell him he played a great game
Tell him you like his article in the newspaper

I'm the party star
I'm popular
I've got my own car
I'm popular
I'll never get caught
I'm popular
I make football bets
I'm a teachers pet.

I propose we support a one month limit on going steady
I think It will keep you both more able to deal with weird situations
And get to know more people
I think if you're ready to go out with Johnny
Now's the time to tell him about your one month limit
He wont mind he'll apreciate your fresh look on dating
And once you've dated someone else you can date him again
I'm sure he'll like it
Everyone will appreciate it
You're so novel, what a good idea
You can keep your time to your self
You don't need date insurance
You can go out with whoever you want to
Every boy, every boy in the whole world could be yours
If you'll just listen to my plan
THE TEENAGE GUIDE TO POPULARITY

I'm head of the class
I'm popular
I'm a quarter back
I'm popular
My mom says I'm a catch
I'm popular
I'm never last picked
I got a cheerleader chick
I'm the party star
I'm popular
I've got my own car
I'm popular
I'll never get caught
I'm popular
I'm the teacher's pet
I make football bets

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

It always seemed far too post-Weezer to enjoy.

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic, but not half as classic as the video.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

One of the worst songs ever.

is like a dumbed down (is that even possible?) precursor to what i consider the worst lyrics ever (madonna's "verse" (sic) in "american life")

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

the rat faced "indie pop" stringbean who preys on high school girls despite approaching his 10 year reunion at work likes this song. i rest my case.

jess, Wednesday, 11 August 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

pasty ilx critic\$ don't like it, it must be good

6335, Wednesday, 11 August 2004 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

yes of course, fans always make the music don't they

purple patch (electricsound), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

It always seemed far too post-Weezer to enjoy.

Nada Surf always seemed better than Weezer to me, though admittedly this is not hard.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 03:06 (twenty-one years ago)

classic, and explain why those lyrics are bad?! ok ok verses a little smarmy perhaps but the chorus is great!!

slint comparison otm, much more so than weezer (although it is better than anything weezer did, obv.)

artiste, Wednesday, 11 August 2004 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

kit brash (kit brash), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

May I suggest not aggravating this spat further, please?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

may i suggest getting a sense of humor? or is this the NU-ILM regime?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 04:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, hilarious.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)

for some reason i know that the video was shot in like 30 degree weather, and all the teenagers were miserable and shivering.

g--ff (gcannon), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 05:36 (twenty-one years ago)

GOOD.

jess, Wednesday, 11 August 2004 09:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Hating this song makes the Baby Jesus cry.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:34 (twenty-one years ago)

yes well i'm sure the only reason i know is cos a bit of pinfield-era 120 mins is stuck in my brain instead of a loved-ones birthday or a sonnet or something, so jokes on me i guess. fucking nada surf.

g--ff (gcannon), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

pinfield-era 120 mins

hmmm.... louis largent.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Hating this song makes the Baby Jesus cry.

Maybe he just needs to be burped.*

*this is not an original joke, btw. It was stolen without written consent.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

gygax are you correcting me or are you just into louis largent?

g--ff (gcannon), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Lewis?

Also - "Popular" is sorta meh, though in the context of the album from which is sproinged, it's Beethoven's 9th; new Nada Surf is fab.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I WISH I COULD BE LIKE DAVID WATTS

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i think this came out pre-pinfield but i can't be positive.
