...is fucking amazing. I'm no huge fan of the man, but he really nails the intensity of this song, his Simon Finn fanboy-ness comes out in the best possible way. Download it! Heaviosity.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 23:59 (twenty years ago)

Why aren't you a huge fan of the man? He was big-upping Shirley Collins when most of the old squirrel america crowd was in shortpants.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 00:31 (twenty years ago)

I know, I guess it's just an example of "not hearing the right stuff." I hate when people tell me that about the Dead and my buddy Matt was similarly pissed when I told him that about Current 93, which is one of his favorite bands.

I guess I just lump Tibet in with the HNAS / NWW / Coil / etc gothfolkdeath crowd, who, aside from Monte Cazzaza and select Throbbing Gristle, have always left me cold

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 00:34 (twenty years ago)

dude, it sucks. sorry. tibet's covers (excepting "sad go round") always sound so tossed-off, this is no exception.

(NWW = gothfolkdeath?!)

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 00:36 (twenty years ago)

When I was on the old Swans e-mail list (Jarboe's list, not Gira's. Jarboe's group was the closest thing I came to an ILM back in 99/2000.) there were three rules. 1) All Swans is holy (duh) 2) All Current 93 is holy 3) All Coil is holy.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 00:38 (twenty years ago)

xpost no way! I love it - he sounds so...desperate.

I guess putting NWW in that category is kinda unfair. I have a few Nurse With Wound albums but never listen to them. It's one of those bands I know I should like, but just don't.

I dig some Coil stuff quite a bit though

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 00:38 (twenty years ago)

Roger, have you ever heard All The Pretty Little Horses? You might like that.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 00:41 (twenty years ago)

I've only heard Nick Cave's version

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 00:42 (twenty years ago)

maybe i should just admit to myself that i'm totally burnt on tibet's shtick. "christ...and the blood...and the children..." they stopped being a party band after "swastikas for noddy," really.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 00:43 (twenty years ago)

(sigh) ok, fellas, gimme 5 songs to download. Scott knows my taste pretty well I think. Between the two of you (or anyone else who dives in) I'll make a CDR and jam it tonight instead of packing.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 00:45 (twenty years ago)

You wanted a C93 jamfest so include

Crowleymass 12" (the first time we had FUN)
Summer of Love-Swastikas From Noddy (you could feel them laughing inside the studio) Best Blue Oyster Cult cover ever.
Beausoleil-also Swastikas album.

there's 3 of 5

cs appleby (cs appleby), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 01:49 (twenty years ago)

what is this a cover of? the fall tune?

|a|m|t|r|s|t| (amateurist), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 01:52 (twenty years ago)

simon finn

shit, applby, is that really a cover of "This Ain't The Summer Of Love????" holy christ. off to soulseek!

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 01:55 (twenty years ago)

100% certain

cs appleby (cs appleby), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 01:56 (twenty years ago)

see how fun they can be!!!

cs appleby (cs appleby), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 01:59 (twenty years ago)

I know nothing about C93, and what little i've heard has sounded too goth for my tastes. I like NWW though; Merzbild Schwet, Spiral Insana and A Missing Sense are all killer.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 02:02 (twenty years ago)

this is the C93 party channel

again:
Crowleymass 12" (the first time we had FUN)
Summer of Love-Swastikas From Noddy (you could feel them laughing inside the studio) Best Blue Oyster Cult cover ever.
Beausoleil-also Swastikas album.

Ian you should track down Brained by Falling Masonry!!!! NWW
look at the guest musicians and tell me that's not a party.

cs appleby (cs appleby), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 02:12 (twenty years ago)

1. beausoleil & the blue oyster cult cover from "swastikas"
2. horsey ("as the world disappears" live version)
3. i have a special plan for this world
4. the seven seals are revealed at the end of time as seven bows
5. hitler as kalki (sdm)

bonus beats:
stapleton/tibet "dead side of the moon"
c93/nww "butterfly drops"

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 03:16 (twenty years ago)

isn't "brained" pretty much just "brainticket part one" with thirlwell sputtering over it?

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 03:23 (twenty years ago)

Was it?

cs appleby (cs appleby), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 03:43 (twenty years ago)

it's an unexpected roller coaster ride...with the loop-dee-loops and all.

cs appleby (cs appleby), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 03:47 (twenty years ago)

5. hitler as kalki (sdm)

cs appleby (cs appleby), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 03:50 (twenty years ago)

Coal Black Smith should also be in there

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 06:24 (twenty years ago)

and what about that song on NWW's _An Awkward Pause_, with Tibet doing his best "rock singer" impersonation?
(sorry, can't remember the title)

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 06:38 (twenty years ago)

The 'problem' with Current 93 is that they have no album that one can consider to be representative of what the band stands for. All the above mentioned material dates from mid-eighties - and if you like it, or not, that's not saying much. I say check out All the Pretty Little Horses album and Sleep Has His House as a whole. Or try downloading the tracklisting of samplers like Calling For Vanished Faces and Emblems; the Menstrual Years; especially the last one gives a nice coverage of what has been done sound/style-like.

Roger in Mokum (Roger T), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 06:39 (twenty years ago)

'Sleep Has His House' seemed very boring to me. With albums, I'd say start with ' Thunder Perfect Mind' or my personal fave, 'Of Ruine or Some Blazing Starre'.
All the comps you mentionned are excellent and don't really overlap with albums, so these would also be good entry points.

I once had a small chat with Tibet going to Liverpool st. on the BR train (he lives in Walthamstow). Very nice guy. He sent me 'Cold Black Stars', that had just come out, two days later.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 07:35 (twenty years ago)

'Sleep Has His House' seemed very boring to me.

That is the difficulty with Current 93. An average band has one or two albums that are considered to be the best, by both fans and music journalists. With Current 93, that is not the case. Therefore it's hard to point out the ideal starting point for those interested.

Roger in Mokum (Roger T), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 07:52 (twenty years ago)

brained by falling masonry is fantastic. features thirlwell and roman jugg (damned?) and was reviewed in smash hits.(seriously)
sylivie and babs is still my favourite nurse with wound album tho.

current 93 lost it for me after swastikas. nature unveiled is a good one (first thing by them i heard) and seek out nightmare culture which has current 93 / coil / boyd rice and steve ignorant at his vocal best

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 07:54 (twenty years ago)

download imperium parts I - IV

most probably the most sad and despressing music ever committed to tape...

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 07:55 (twenty years ago)

Yes, I forgot 'Imperium'. "Time stands still" and "Locust" are pretty great too on that album.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 08:00 (twenty years ago)

'sleep has his house' is an alb abt his father's death but also an album of two halves. The first is a bunch of folk-ish (sounds kinda medieval but I only know abt medieval through hollywood adaptations of it) themed songs, the second side is a one single track charlamaigne palestine type blast off.

I don't believe what he does is a schtick, it's carried off with a conviction. Maybe this is what goth actually is like.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 08:12 (twenty years ago)

yeah, imperium and "coal black smith." i'm sure i'm forgetting others.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 16:35 (twenty years ago)

Can there be a C93 party that isn't finished with Misery Farm?

phil jones (interstar), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 20:29 (twenty years ago)

"Sleep Has His House' seemed very boring to me."

Wow, I'm starting to love the bits of this I've downloaded. It's on my "to buy" list.

"That is the difficulty with Current 93. An average band has one or two albums that are considered to be the best, by both fans and music journalists. With Current 93, that is not the case. Therefore it's hard to point out the ideal starting point for those interested."

This is a difficulty? Isn't that the usual hallmark of genius?

phil jones (interstar), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 20:47 (twenty years ago)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 21:05 (twenty years ago)

C93 might be doing a US date as well; they were slated for Irving Plaza in October but a family matter made David postpone. Highly recommend the Keenan book "England's Hidden Reverse", which chronicles the story of NWW, C93 and Coil; some good insight into the minds of the players, really nicely put together. I don't think Tibet's covers are bad at all, that take on Comus' "Diana" is totally over the top great.

The Keenan book is quite good: that scene was filled with great music and such a mix of disturbing and unbelievably silly characters. Some anecdotes walk the fine line between horror and slapstick comedy.
I think C93 covered also _Tam Lin_, can't remember the album though.

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Thursday, 12 August 2004 05:57 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone know if the recent remaster of 'Thunder Perfect Mind' is the opening salvo of an extended series of reissues?
My copy of 'Island' is really ready to be replaced..

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 12 August 2004 06:08 (twenty years ago)

I still need Island.

is Baaderoni the San Francisco treat?

cs appleby (cs appleby), Thursday, 12 August 2004 06:16 (twenty years ago)

I think the reissues are pretty steady in general from both the C93 and NWW camps. 'Dawn' (one of my faves) and several others have been reissued too in the last couple years.

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Thursday, 12 August 2004 07:21 (twenty years ago)

Why aren't you a huge fan of the man? He was big-upping Shirley Collins when most of the old squirrel america crowd was in shortpants.

So he likes good music and he's liked it for a long time, what does that prove exactly? Other than the fact that he's obviously a lot older than most of us?

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 12 August 2004 09:05 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...
Scott, on a level, I agree with you, but all three of those artists have stuff which isn't for every mood (Body to Body, Job to Job; Swastikas for Noddy; Astral Disaster). Guess I'm not an expert on this, so I shouldn't talk (I've heard mixed reviews of this one).
