Do you hang with Maxwell?

What's up with this guy? I never really hear about him outside of the "Women's Work" single, don't think he has a thread on ILM. But I know he's ambitious & has a few albums out on a major -- is he popular? What do you think of his music?

I think he was one of those reluctant sex symbols who really wanted respect more than popularity and got a little pretentious but then D'Angelo did the same thing and people forgot about him. also, he did that cover of NIN's "Closer" on MTV Unplugged.

first album, Maxwell's 'Urban Hang Suite' was an, as you out it, ambitious project to (to me) revisit Marvin Gaye from 'Let's Get It On' uo through 'Here, My Dear'. R&B album suites that talked about love, relationships, etc,

first album yielded "sumthin sumthin" which is a great song but I really can't remmeber stuff since then outside of his "she's the bomb" reference to Kate Bush on his live version of 'Woman's World' (and I liked the first album)

Second album Embrya passed me by.

Embrya is one of the most pretentious albums I own, but good to fuck to, to be blunt. All the song titles feature colons and subordinate clauses.

Of course the Bingo is down with Maxwell. Urban Hang Suite is one of the best "fuck" albums. Especially "Ascension (don't ever wonder)".

he kind of 'did a lauren hill' and went from ace soul
to abject pretension from album 1 to 2. i haven't however
listened to 'embrya' all the way through it has to be said.

It's a DC inaugural event at that. I bought a ticket for one outside the event years ago (featuring old soul acts) and then wrote a review of it for Dave Marsh's rap & roll zine. It was cheaper than this (an exception to the rule)
