SIMON FINN
10pm
After a 30 year break from the music industry, on the eve of the RNC, legendary psych-folk musician Simon Finn will make his NYC debut with this exclusive area performance.
"Spellbinding dark meditations." - Arthur Magazine
"Simon Finn's 1970 masterpiece 'Pass the Distance' is narcoleptic and nightmarish made even freakier by multi-instrumentalist David Toop's strange accompaniment. One of the most intriguing, dark folk albums ever released. Finn's legacy looms large over the music of contemporary folk revivalists and experimenters like Richard Youngs and Devendra Banhart." - Other Music

NO NECK BLUES BAND
11pm
"One of the most enigmatic and defiantly anti-commercial groups to emerge from the New York loft scene during the '90s, NNCK (as the group is often abbreviated) membership is in a state of near-constant flux. Incorporating elements of folk, drone, psychedelia, free jazz, noise, and just about everything else, NNCK has nevertheless carved out a distinctive sound. The collective has also made a name for itself through its live performances. In early 1999, NNCK toured with guitar legend John Fahey, who dubbed them his favorite new band." - All Music Guide

hi

Russ (Russ), Monday, 23 August 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Russ: I think I left my hat at the bottom of the ocean.

sexyDancer, Monday, 23 August 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeff: that was a good set on Friday. weird one.

Village Voice: "Finn’s Pass the Distance is the most recent ’60s psych-folk rarity to be reissued, finally making its way from eBay and collectors' shelves to Other Music. He’ll be joined by No Neck Blues Band, who seem to show up whenever an obscure folkie is resurrected. (PROVAN)"

OK...

Russ (Russ), Monday, 23 August 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

still don't know what to play.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 23 August 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

apparently La Nortena are now requesting a post-show dance-party.
hmmmm.
maybe a bring a few disco slabs ?
seems bit incongruous.

Russ (Russ), Monday, 23 August 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

really? That's cool 'cause last time they shut it down. I will bring dance tunes.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 23 August 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

the weird cat stevens song, please.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 23 August 2004 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I will have to borrow it from ex-ladyfriend, then.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 23 August 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

whos pregamin with peeps comin down fom prov?! IANDUDE

brock (brock), Monday, 23 August 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

a request for the twelve minute male version of Is It All Over My Face?

sexyDancer, Monday, 23 August 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

only if you can supply it!

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 23 August 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The Cat Stevens song is Was Dog a Doughnut. Jellybean did a version as well and Salsa Smurph by Special Request on Tommy Boy is a cool electro version marrying the melody to a Kraftwerk beat.

j, you mean the version on the Loft boxset?

play Jerusalum by the Fall.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 23 August 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan you know everything.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 23 August 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

The Cat S track is also on the New Order "Back to Mine" mix; i think the vinyl is unmixed, and yes the ultimate IIAOMF? is on the Loft Box.

sexyDancer, Monday, 23 August 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

okay I'm giving up.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 23 August 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

just everything about Cat Stevens breakdance music and alternate Arthur Russell tracks.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 23 August 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

: (

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 23 August 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Holla brock!

WILL BE A GOOD TIME.

Stence, just play swing.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Monday, 23 August 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

said this on the other Simon Finn thread, but just to be thorough:

La Nortena / El Bohemio now has a liquor license and also they'll be selling beer cheaper than last time. Margaritas are now possible.

I'll be drinking Mezcal with Squirt in it.

Todd

todd p, Monday, 23 August 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

That's how I lost my hat!

sexyDancer, Monday, 23 August 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow - this show sounds great.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

following up...

the person I asked to record this is going to be out of town.
I honestly don't have the time / inclination to sort it out now, nor is it a big priority for me.

so, if you want a recording, it's up to you to make it, and please be discreet.

also FYI - Michael Goodstein at WFMU will be recording a session / interview with Simon on Friday afternoon.
not sure when it will air tho.

Russ (Russ), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

russ, did you talk to Rich Zerbo?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan - no

People who are obsessive about documenting and preserving everything get on my nerves.
(I'm not talking about Rich. I'm just sayin', in general...)
If people want to hear the performance, they should be at the show.
or they can check out the WFMU session.

Russ (Russ), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

how big is this place? any chance it will fill up? current plans have me not being able to get to it before 9:30PM.

also, has it been decided when the DJs will spin? I don't want to miss ILM's own hstencil

comme personne (common_person), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

it's not a huge place, my guess is it can't hold more than 250 (but I could be entirely wrong on that). We haven't sorted anything about djing - Joel and I will probably just take turns off-and-on between bands and after all night. Will definitely play dance stuff afterward so hopefully people will stick around.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

HSF MOFO

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

how big is this place?

my guess is that it holds 150 - 200 people.
and there's no stage, so we may close the door after 150 people are in / have paid.

any chance it will fill up?

at this point, that seems very likely.

current plans have me not being able to get to it before 9:30PM.

I recommend getting there as early as possible, after the doors open at 8pm.

also, has it been decided when the DJs will spin?

they will be trading off all night.
I might post a more detailed schedule tomorrow.

and the venue want to put on their own DJs on after 2am, so...

Russ (Russ), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

BAD grammar...

Russ (Russ), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, so we can only play 'til 2? That's kinda fine with me, actually.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 26 August 2004 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

dammit dammit dammit, my friend wants to go to PS1, if it were up to me I'd skip it or leave early, but she won't. FUCK

comme personne (common_person), Thursday, 26 August 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

what's going on there?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 26 August 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

email me off-list with your name and how many people you're coming with...I can hold your place until 10pm.

Russ (Russ), Thursday, 26 August 2004 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

a party called Warm Up that they do every summer Saturday. they bring in DJs and sometimes bands from around all over, this week it's Stienski (live)
DJ Buck (Leaf Recordings)
+ a special guest.
haven't heard of those guys, probably won't know the guest either. I've only been once but it was fun, normally I'm not much of a dancer but I got down.

xpost THANKS RUSS YOU ARE AWESOME

comme personne (common_person), Thursday, 26 August 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Steinski's pretty good. Nice of Russ to help you out.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 26 August 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

be sure to get to PS1 early too
that shit gets packed

Russ (Russ), Thursday, 26 August 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

PS1 ends early though. Hop on the G afterwords.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 26 August 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

and don't bother sending me an email through this board
it'll probably get delayed for 5 days (true)

nycpe @ yahoo . com

Russ (Russ), Thursday, 26 August 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

roger that. yeah I figure if we leave PS1 at 9:00 and hop on the G right away we have a chance of making it to Brooklyn by 10:00, you know, if the G is running full service

comme personne (common_person), Thursday, 26 August 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

http://home.iae.nl/users/maes/cave/pix/slowtrain.jpg

comme personne (common_person), Thursday, 26 August 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

ha ha, but in all seriousness, it's only three stops away on the G.

PS1 gets over around 8:00, our doors open at 8, so you'll be fine probably. But I wouldn't dilly dally, it'll probably sell out by 10 or so (but who knows?)

La Norteña (aka ‘El Bohemio’) holds around 200-250 people. It's about the size of 4 Tommy's Tavern back rooms.

They're moving out almost all of the tables this time, so we'll be able to have a lot of folks.

Simon may be playing on top of a piece of plywood on top of a pool table inorder to get him up above the level of the crowd - seriously! we'll see anyway.

Todd toddp @ toddpnyc . com

todd p, Thursday, 26 August 2004 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

my guess is that, we could manage to let in closer to 300-400 folks maybe, but only if the desire for folks to be uncomfortably packed is really present. otherwise, we'll probably cut it off lower for comfort's sake, or maybe we won't even get a huge crowd, who knows.

he will be playing a lot of new material that will eventually turn up on his next record.

thanks !

Russ (Russ), Saturday, 28 August 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

This was fantastic. Simon Finn was excellent (he's now the second (and probably last) person I've ever gotten an autograph from (Zakk Wylde was first) - It was easily the best NNCK show I've seen in years, and Virgin Eye totally stole the show. Word to Joel the Saint and our own hstence (who's totally cool) on the wheels o steel, rockin' the Fantastic Planet jams - took me back. Brews with Ian J0hnson and his adorable friend Nicole almost made up for him not being in Providence when we thought he lived there.

Great turnout,too.

I wouldn't have wanted to spend my last night in NYC any other way.

Brock and others - you seriously missed out

roger adultery (roger adultery), Sunday, 29 August 2004 11:08 (twenty-one years ago)

daaaaaaaaaaaammmnnniiitttt

glad it was a rad time! GOOD LUCK WITH EVERYTHING IN TENNESSEE ROG!!! squeeze the wifey for me.

brock (brock), Sunday, 29 August 2004 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

only saw Simon, who was amazing. Was pretty annoyed with the loud talking coming from the back, and from people who should know better. I tried to inch up after showing up late and ended up sitting closer to the speaker then the chatterers, but couldn't see Simon, which I figured was better then seeing him and not hearing him.

p.s. I hate blacklights.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 29 August 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah my teeth were glowing green. That ain't right.

will do, mr brock. come visit soon

roger adultery (roger adultery), Sunday, 29 August 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I had a right on time, for sure. It was good to see you dudes again before you head down to the dirty south. NNCK's set started kind've weak, but once they broke the guitars out it was all uphill. Virgin Eye were radical; I thought the saxophone was a really nice touch. Simon Finn... I was kind of underwhelmed. But I wasn't familiar with the material beforehand; if I had been I probably would have enjoyed it more.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Sunday, 29 August 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I had been more in the mood to pay attention to NNCK. What they were playing sounded great, I was just at that point so exhausted I couldn't really spare the braincells.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 30 August 2004 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually had one of the 'parts' stuck in my head today, which is, obviously, a nnck first - Keith going "Virgin-iuhhh....Iberiuuuuuh...Saskachuwan..." - i hope they release that first half of the set (tho i agree it started outa little rocky)

hardly recognized Jason - dude's been doin' heavy Atkins or SOMEthin'

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 30 August 2004 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

did anybody record their set?

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 30 August 2004 01:47 (twenty-one years ago)

the virgin eye blood bros. bored away my companion :((((

comme personne (common_person), Monday, 30 August 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

So Hstencil, what does one play when they DJ a show like this? Can you get away with electro and stuff like that, or do you go the psyche/folk route?

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Monday, 30 August 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

funny you should mention that. I started with more weird stuff, played a bit of krautrock and then rock and funk. After NNCK, Joel played some stuff and while we were talking, we thought we should play some electro and whatnot. It was all going well and good until some dude came up and told me that the dub mix of Ashford & Simpson's "Solid" was a "personal affront." Dude, that's one of my favorite songs! I was hoping the electro version of "Tequila" would've gone over better, too.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 30 August 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean it was all going well and good as in nobody really cared about what we played. Kind of impossible to get people at a show like this dancing, even if it wasn't fifty billion degrees fahrenheit in the place.

Anyway, it was a lot of fun regardless.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 30 August 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

You had me at Fantastic Planet dude

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 30 August 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

awwww.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 30 August 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I was curious because I've been at shows where the most inappropriate between-set music was played, and I always found that strange. I remember hearing some nu-metal crap played between an avant-garde jazz group and a gypsy/Albanian/Middle Eastern group in Detroit a few years back.

"Personal affront?" Ah, you can't please everyone.

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Monday, 30 August 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah I loves lotsa psyche and folk, but I don't think it's necessarily a good idea to play stuff like that at a psyche/folk show (though I did play "Maria Bethania" by Caetano Veloso which kinda is in the neighborhood - nobody seemed to give a shit though which sucks 'cause that song rules). I'd never play nu-metal crap, ever, tho.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 30 August 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

any Harvey Sid Fisher?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 30 August 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I forgot!

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 30 August 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm...and "Virgo" is one of my all time favorite songs. And it's virgo time. And I'm a virgo.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 30 August 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought you were a Libra! Maybe I'm confusing what the wifey was saying.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 30 August 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

hahahah nope - i'm as virgo as it gets. i hang up T shirts.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 30 August 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

that song is pretty right on

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 30 August 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I was more or less pleased with how things went along, I was impressed by Simon's set. he sort of got his sea legs after a few songs in, by the end he was fiery.

things that could have been better: should have requested the management leave the air conditioner on overnight and all day to cool down the place, should have filled the gap between the surface of the pool table and the piece of plywood that Simon was set up on with blankets. the reverberations made Simon's mikes feedback, and kept us from turning him up loud enough the drown out the rude talkers in the back.

Sounded great up close though. thanks to everyone for coming, thanks especially to those that helped move 500 lb pool tables around.

Todd

todd p, Monday, 30 August 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

goddamn those pool tables were insanely heavy.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 30 August 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)
