Now Playing: Outskirts Of Infinity - Scenes From The Dreams Of Angels (Infinity Records - 1989)

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 20 August 2004 15:19 (twenty years ago)

I found Quadrophenia at a library sale, and I must say it's one of my favorite pieces of vinyl. The giant size photo booklet is splendid.

thekingatnight (thekingatnight), Friday, 20 August 2004 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Now Playing: The Temptations - House Party (Gordy - 1975)

Part of me really really wants to start an I Love Records board, but If I did they would have to commit me. I already spend way too much time on ILX. I don't know why I wanna spend so much time on a computer. I don't even really like computers. It helps pass the time though. Just as long as Rufus gets enough sun and fun. (he's in daycare for the first time all day today. He's gonna go twice a week. It's weird. I'm cleaning a lot and playing lots of records. It feels like both a relief AND a guilt-trip, you know? Like I'm liking it too much. But what the hey, dad deserves a break every now and again, am I right?)

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 20 August 2004 15:42 (twenty years ago)

I remember being really freaked out when i discovered that there were two versions of Quadrophenia. As a kid i had the one with all the mod soul and james brown on it. that was my definitive version, you know?

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 20 August 2004 15:43 (twenty years ago)

I wish I still had a copy of the soundtrack.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 20 August 2004 15:44 (twenty years ago)

10"s RULE!

Just got the Rhythm and Sound with Cornell Campbell from a couple of years ago in a lovely yellow unmarked paper cover. Mmm. (It's an amazing track as well) They still have the whole series in Soul Jazz, but I don't know how many more I can buy before I feel really guilty for not just getting the CD. (Am I allowed to say that here?)

Jamie, Friday, 20 August 2004 15:51 (twenty years ago)

That's okay, Jamie. I have known purists, and i have loved purists, but i am not a purist. sometimes cd reissues/boxes/collections are just too tasty to pass up.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 20 August 2004 15:53 (twenty years ago)

Now Playing: Eleazar's Circus - Stonepillow (London Phase 4 Stereo - 1968)

Choice lyric: "The Lincoln Tunnel gave a rose to Herald Square/The laundromats have stated that they do believe in prayer/A siren studied singing with a steeple, now she sounds like chimes/A painting by Van Gogh is drama critic for the Times"

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 20 August 2004 15:57 (twenty years ago)

>They still have the whole series in Soul Jazz, but I don't know how many more I can buy before I feel really guilty for not just getting the CD. (Am I allowed to say that here?)

-- Jamie (smarmyjif...), August 20th, 2004.

no, no you're not allowed. You must buy buy buy buy themmmm!

My most recent pickups:

Joris Voorn: Lost Memories 2 on sino. 2 cuts of beautiful techno. One massive building cut, and on the flip, an anthemy piano stab laden hands-in-the air number.

Ferenc: Kronch (kompakt) much has been written about this, all true. Wonderful analogue synth line and a killer little subtle breakbeat loop.

DJ Godfather: It's yo birthday. really stupid ghettotech record (even for ghettotech standards) but it was my birthday so I got it. Pretty silly.

tylero (tylero), Friday, 20 August 2004 15:57 (twenty years ago)

You also just cannot beat the original Blue Monday 12". Another recent find.

thekingatnight (thekingatnight), Friday, 20 August 2004 15:58 (twenty years ago)

I'm thinking of buying a copy of the Quick's Mondo Deco LP from someone on gemm.com for $20. I never see it in stores.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 20 August 2004 16:01 (twenty years ago)

Happy Belated Birthday, Tyler. The one and only record store on the island i live on actually sells Kompakt vinyl! I bought that last Justus Kohncke single there. I like that one a lot.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 20 August 2004 16:01 (twenty years ago)

"You also just cannot beat the original Blue Monday 12". Another recent find."

You can't beat any Factory vinyl. But Blue Monday is especially wonderful on 12 inch. Loud as fuck. Ceremony rules too. But everyone knows that. I have Confusion on Streetwise and Factory. I alternate between the two.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 20 August 2004 16:03 (twenty years ago)

Ah Tyler, your voice will be with me on all my shopping trips from now on. "Buy, buy, buy"

Jamie, Friday, 20 August 2004 16:03 (twenty years ago)

I'm kinda new to vinyl, just got a turntable six months ago. went on a crate digging trip 2 weeks ago around NYC. mostly picked up classic rock in bargain bins to patch some of the holes in my listening.
The Beach Boys - Surfer Girl
ELO - II (side 2 of this is *fantastic*) (got Out Of The Blue too, but I didn't check and sides 3/4 is missing! >:-O )
Elvis Costello - My Aim Is True
The Beatles - Introducing...
The Who - Tommy
The Kinks - Preservation Act I
Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run, Greetings From Ashbury Park
Killing Joke - Brighter Than 1000 Suns

also
Kingston Trio - i forget which
Manhattahn Transfer - s/t, and another one
Ives - some sonatas
Subotonick - something Sulphur Clouds (really good)

and the second new record I've ever bought/first 7" I've ever bought:
Animal Collective - Who Could Win A Rabbit

there's a bunch more I'm forgetting, I spent almost $150. I really like vinyl. now I need to get a better stylus. I'm thinking a Grado Green, maybe. suggestions?

comme personne (common_person), Friday, 20 August 2004 16:09 (twenty years ago)

I probably should disclaim Killing Joke's grouping with the classic rock stuff :)

comme personne (common_person), Friday, 20 August 2004 16:11 (twenty years ago)

I actually haven't been buying too much lately. Hmm. Got Joni's Ladies of the Canyon and Macca's first self-titled solo for a few bucks each, just filling in little gaps there. Picked up nice copies of Lene Lovich's Stateless and Tripod Jimmie's A Warning to All Strangers from the dollar bin; haven't listened to 'em yet. Upgraded my CD copies of Willie Colon's The Hustler and Earth Wind & Fire's first WB one to the recent LP reissues; the latter on nice 180 gram. Oh, I finally bought Neil Michael Hagerty's Howling Hex (the regular release one) on 2LP (fucking great record), and pre-ordered his newest limited edition one from Drag City.

I think that's about it. Haven't been buying too much lately.

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Friday, 20 August 2004 16:14 (twenty years ago)

Scott, what do you think is a fair price for that Gary Higgins LP? Have I asked you this before? I can't remember. I've been keeping an eye out for it for a while, and when it pops up on eBay it's always right around $50. So I suppose that's its price. That's a bit rich for my blood. I was able to download about half of it from some guy before he disappeared, and it is pretty amazing...

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Friday, 20 August 2004 16:17 (twenty years ago)

last one on eBay-

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=306&item=4028377544&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Friday, 20 August 2004 16:19 (twenty years ago)

I just bought the 180gm vinyl version of God's Got It! by Rev. Charlie Jackson that Crypt released earlier this year. Yeah, it's got a few less songs than the CD version on Casequarter, but it's mastered from the original singles.

Vic Funk, Friday, 20 August 2004 16:23 (twenty years ago)

M.E.-the Red Hash album? Oh god, it's worth it's weight in gold! Or hash even. there is a cd reish if you wanna economize, but the vinyl is nice. i don't own a copy myself. i would pay 50 for it, if i had the cash. i'm not in the market right now though. it's only gonna go up and up in price, you know?

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 20 August 2004 16:23 (twenty years ago)

i'm even a little surprised that it doesn't go for more than 50. by ebay-psych-goon standards that ain't that bad.

Now Playing: DJ QBert - Wave Twisters (Galactic Butt Hair - 1998)

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 20 August 2004 16:27 (twenty years ago)

Oh there is a CD reish? Huh, I've never come across that. Well hell, I'll just pick up that then. I'm really no purist myself.

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Friday, 20 August 2004 16:36 (twenty years ago)

i like how if you type in - Gary Higgins Red Hash - on google, me talking about that album on ILM is the first thing that shows up. the cd is italian.

Now Playing: Tod Dockstader - Eight Electronic Pieces (Folkways - 1961)

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 20 August 2004 16:56 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, that Dockstader is great. I found a copy at Mystery Train records in Boston in 1998 for like $8. The same trip as the last time I visited Cape Cod, in fact! Although I have been back to Boston proper since then. The other record I bought at that store that day was Bull Angus's Free For All. That's an OK record, but I like Nugent's better. Boston has amazing record stores. Or did. They're probably well picked over these days, what with the internet and all.

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Friday, 20 August 2004 17:05 (twenty years ago)

I got good stuff in Cambridge when we were there not that long ago. I forgot to go to Twisted Village though. But it is just as well, as I probably would have spent too much money. That's when i picked up the Moonrakers album and the Puzzle record. I bought lots of stuff.

Now Playing: Jimmy Campbell - Half Baked (Vertigo - 1971)

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 20 August 2004 17:27 (twenty years ago)

Broheem Diamond Eyeball, did I tell you my cool news?! Mike Stax is gonna print my Chubby Checker piece in an upcoming issue of Ugly Things!! Not the next issue, but the one after, so it won't be out for a while. I sent it to him on a whim. I'm excited about that. UG is my favorite magazine and I'm a big fan of Mike's too. I could die happy almost. Now I just have to get Sundazed to reissue the record and let me write the liner notes and my mission on earth will be complete.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 20 August 2004 17:33 (twenty years ago)

That's excellent Scott! still one of the best things I've read this year. Yeah man, that definitely deserves to reach a wider audience. I for one promptly put that record on my wish list after reading the piece. Still haven't found it. You really made the thing come alive, though; I kinda feel like I've already heard it! I keep forgetting to ask my friend James Porter, who has been threatening to write a book about black rock, whether he has that record.

I should buy Ugly Things more often. It's always really well done. It's tough for me to keep up with mags, now that I spend so much time on this here computer.

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Friday, 20 August 2004 17:52 (twenty years ago)

I just bought this vinyl only LSD-March live LP that is quite good if you like that sort of thing:

http://aquariusrecords.org/images/lsdmkanalp.jpg

mcd (mcd), Friday, 20 August 2004 17:54 (twenty years ago)

It looks good, mcd. I've never heard it.

M.E.- I'm gonna burn a copy somehow for M.S. cuz he has never heard it either. When i do I'll make you a copy. I just have to find someone who can burn from vinyl. someone gave us a cd recorder for free, but it doesn't work. Of course, I could just make you a tape, but nobody likes tapes anymore.

Now Playing: Ernie Djohan - Deritaku (Fontana Indonesia - 196?) (good indonesian pop/rock. catchy and in every style of the day. even C&W!)

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 20 August 2004 18:07 (twenty years ago)

That's cool, man - i'd love to hear it. I could burn you something in return. Maybe this Thundermother record that I think you'd like. Of course, I still haven't learned how to burn vinyl yet either. I even offered to burn Chuck E. a compilation of all the old Seger singles over a year ago! (yikes, I hope he doesn't read that.) I really need to figure it out once and for all; perhaps I'll make it my project for the weekend. Of course I've said THAT before..

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Friday, 20 August 2004 18:21 (twenty years ago)

i've inhereted a box of about 100 78 RPMs. I guess they aren't "vinyl" per se, but they are records. My turntable won't play them though. But that's okay, since I'm not itching to listen to Roy Acuff.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 20 August 2004 18:25 (twenty years ago)

You should listen to them, Kyle. Buy a cheapo used turntable that plays 78s and you will be surprised how awesome Roy Acuff can sound. Everyone should own a seperate 78 turntable that they keep in the closet for pre-war hootenanies!

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 20 August 2004 18:29 (twenty years ago)

when i was out in LA, i got this awesome pere ubu bootleg record from 78 called dont expect art.

also in that trip,
joni mitchell - don juan's reckless daughter
anthony braxton - creative orch music
anthony braxton - circle paris concert
oneida - caesar's column remix 12"

all great, all for about $40 all together.

peter smith (plsmith), Friday, 20 August 2004 18:31 (twenty years ago)

I need to get a 78 RPM turntable so I can play my Fahey 78 and that one track on the Moby Grape album.

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Friday, 20 August 2004 18:31 (twenty years ago)

I was listening to: Z-3 MCs - "Triple Threat" (Beauty and the Beat - 198?) (mixed by Duke Bootee. edited by the Latin Rascals. Beauty and the Beat Records - 125 Broad St. Elizabeth, New Jersey (201)353-8294)

Now I'm listening to: Declaration Of Independents (Ambition - 1980) (cool comp: SVT, Pylon, Kevin Dunn, Robin Lane, Luxury, Ragnar Kvaran, Root Boy Slim, Tex Rubinowitz. You, know, that whole crowd. worth it for the genius that is "Cool" by Pylon and Kevin Dunn's cover of "Nadine".

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 20 August 2004 18:35 (twenty years ago)

I got what I think is an original copy of the Sonic's Rendezvous Band 45 about a year and a half ago for 99 cents!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:17 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, despite David Thomas's proproganda, all the Ubu vinyl I've head is is a yard-sale must! (Well, except maybe for ONE MAN DRIVES--new CD version is everything Easter should be, hallelujah & pass the chocolate rabbit caffeine) John Corbett's Vinyl Freak column in "Down Beat" a vivid view of never-on-aluminum-coated plastic (jazz, yeah, but frequently with poprockhead-appeal, esp. of late-60s/early 70s what-the-hay exuberance). Finally listened again to WANNA BUY A BRIDGE? post- or cusp-punk claasic: a model comp, despite most (but not all) individual tracks eventually trickling down to aluminum-coated-plastic. New vinyl: Munk x Princess Superstar 12", also new DMX Krew 12" "mini-album" (both pretty uneven, so far, but the former's already grown on me). Other new(incl. new-to-me) sonic oldth: if, that is, if R.E.M.'s early early itchy sweaty poison ivy live boot FILE UNDER KUDZU, and if Crime's newly-assembled SAN FRANCISCO'S STILL DOOMED (don't call us punks-via-glammed-flashbacks to Jorma Airplane primo neon-a-go-go, or even Link Wraybies, Gawd no!)IF these two were on vinyl, rather than cassette and CD,respctively (the latter released 8/31[swamirecords.com]), then I'd mention them too.

Don Allred, Friday, 20 August 2004 19:36 (twenty years ago)

I just got the new Bark Psychosis on vinyl!! Whooo!!

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 20 August 2004 19:42 (twenty years ago)

Now Playing: Ennio Morricone - Guns For San Sebastian (OST) (MGM - 1970)

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 22 August 2004 18:23 (twenty years ago)

Teclo's Death - Teclo is killed by a villager's thrown knife. We hear this intense music as his body hurtles down the face of the dam. (1:21)

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 22 August 2004 18:25 (twenty years ago)

some guy was selling LPs outside the deli today and I got a compilation of 70s country & western featuring tons of people i've never heard of before. it will go well with the gift of the weed man.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Sunday, 22 August 2004 19:03 (twenty years ago)

word up.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 22 August 2004 19:15 (twenty years ago)

Now Playing: Ennio Morricone - The Burglars (Bell - 1972)

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 22 August 2004 19:16 (twenty years ago)

Recent cassette purchases, fifty cent ea.: BEST OF(s) Art of Noise, OMD, Oingo Boingo (thatun shoulda been a quarter, but has a certain hollywood punkettes Zappa mighta liked-type crass-ass-appeal)); Yaz UPSTAIRS AT ERIC'S,(Eurhytmics with more brains and balls, both esp. on female tip); Ultra Vivid Scene's JOY 1967-1990 (not the best vocals, but good everything else, if you like Robyn and Stephen Merritt, prob would even like vocals); Scritti Politti's CUPID & pSYCHE 85 (Miles:"I wanna play with Spitti Politti." And so it came to pass)No scratches.

Don Allred, Sunday, 22 August 2004 19:18 (twenty years ago)

I just listened to: All Natural Lemon & Lime Flavors - Turning Into Small (Gern Blandsten - 1998)

Now: Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska (Columbia - 1982)

I have never ever listened to Nebraska before. I'm not even thru side one and I already want to turn it off. why does the boss's "fer" for "for" bug me so much? I think I'd rather be listening to Feriner.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 22 August 2004 20:24 (twenty years ago)

Great Split LPs I have Known & Loved:
Los Crudos & Spitboy - Crust!
Palatka & Asshole Parade - Featuring two of Folorida's finest hardcore bands
Mr. Brinkman & Pleasurehorse - Presenting Brinkman as looped out on cough syrup & pleasurehorse as lofi venetian snares renditions
men's recovery project & sinking body - classic for Naked Sailor alone; the sinking body side fills the need to own some sinking body material but also reminds me not to buy any more..
wolf eyes & Andrew WK - crap wolf eyes tracks (early stuff; forgive 'em) but the most amazing AWK track ever, "Wolf Eyes Rules"

Probably the most underrated format EVER. It's super wonderful.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Sunday, 22 August 2004 20:31 (twenty years ago)

Was Bruce inspired by Suicide when he cut "State Trooper"? Alan Vega could make that song great. He could make all of these songs so much better, actually. I can only listen to one side though. I'll listen to the other side at a later date.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 22 August 2004 20:39 (twenty years ago)

I got the Rex album ('76 Columbia) in a dollar bin a couple of weeks ago. I had no idea that late '70s teenpop dude Rex Smith had earlier been in a gnarly metal band that actually opened for Ted Nugent! Not a very good album, but does have an awesome cover of "I Can't Explain" (no lie). I would recommend buying a dollar bin copy of it just to hear that.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 22 August 2004 20:41 (twenty years ago)

and you know that his brother sang in Starz, right? ( i think it was his brother.)

Finally back online after Ivan. Scott, you are of course way ahead of me on the jazz; sorry for the lecture. Yes indeed, Mingus is much harder to find than Bru, cos he's so much better.Andrew, I guess you know how hard to find TIME FADES AWAY is; I've only got it via Chris Cook's kind C90 (oops another tape sorry). Tonight on the phone, my fellow forest-storm vet started musing about the idea of frmaing and hanging record covers, and before I could tell her about the ads I'd seen for such frames (long ago in mags, but then my Mom found one i a thrift store recently, and I'm sure if you google), she then came up with a plan for putting together a frame big enough to hold abig group of covers, like maybe Complete Works of the fabulously unprolific, or of some sub-sub-subgeneric sensiblity-nexus, or relation of images or colors). And this is one more (new) reason I love her; how's that for a vinly find.

Don Allredvinyl, Wednesday, 22 September 2004 04:37 (twenty years ago)

Hope everything is alright down there in Ivan country, Don! Did your records get wet?

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 09:42 (twenty years ago)

last lps bought: the vels' velocity, a eurovision winners comp, and a portland punk thing from 1990.

Cripps Pink (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 10:15 (twenty years ago)

Came through with dry vinyl, also a busted foot, but went into it with that too, so at least broke even. I found the CRUISIN' soundtrack, yknow this late-70s movie with Al Pacino as undercover cop in pre-AIDS-aware gay leather world of industrial NYC, the Anvil club and all that (based on true case of serial killings, hotly rumored to be antigay; campaign vs. its local filming by the late Arthur Bell, Musto's predecessor; somebody stole a copy of the shooting script right off, etc: terrrible movie, so guess could say it's anti-gay, cos it sucks the wrong way). Several intrestingly off-brands of cheese (worth my fifty cents); what's *amazing* is "Lump,"("Lump Lump in yo Mouly rump!") by Mutiny, the PFunkers who jumped ship and made MUTINY ON THE MAMASHIP, which got some rave reviews when it came out, also in late 70s. I got outbid for it in every late 80s "Goldmine" auction, then of course found it about five miles from home, for three bucks. But guess what! Maybe it was the pressing, but sounded really thin and shrill, like an average twelve inch single. "Lump" sounded much better on the CRUISIN' soundtrack. So the movie was good for soemthing after all (too bad it took such a big smell for that li'l pearl, but so be it).

Don A, Friday, 24 September 2004 01:13 (twenty years ago)

My mother saw Cruisin' while she was pregnant with my older sister, and laughed so hard she went into premature labour.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 24 September 2004 01:16 (twenty years ago)

Marissa Nadler LP on Eclipse Records, "Ballads of Living and Dying"

Beautiful, dark folk. Acoustic geetars, one song with a banjo, and a smattering of organ/accordion/ebow'd electric all appear. Really really really beautiful, pretty music. Reminds me a bit of the Born Heller album I was raving about on its own thread this afternoon. Sad sad songs.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Friday, 24 September 2004 01:20 (twenty years ago)

I've got some idea how rare TFAway is Don, this was the second time I've ever seen the thing (first time was in some other guy's happy hands as he picked it up for $5 at a record fair, we talked a bit, nice guy), it's a good record too, lucky me! Recent stuff; Dub Syndicate "Pounding System (Ambience in Dub)" and Hawkwind's first Lp (part of the United Artists' ROCK SERIES, I've got "Strictly Personal" already so I just need to find Motorhead's "On Parole" according to H's back cover, both $6. Not too bad.

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 24 September 2004 05:32 (twenty years ago)

Yeah Andrew, figured you did have some idea; I just used that phrase rather than shake my fist at you in fested envy! (Note to self:"you do have the tape, you do have the tape...") Best never-on-aluminum-coated-plastic I've heard lately is HOBOKEN SATURDAY NIGHT, by the Insect Trust (their first did come out on Demom, so if I'm wrong about this, please correct me). Kind of like a jazzier Rounders (one of the Trust is indeed Luke Faust), but, with Pretty Purdie, Hugh McCracken, Elvin Jones (who of course could easily crush the hippies, but fits right in, as on Allen Ginsberg and Peter Orlovsky's SONGS OF INNOCENCE AND EXPERIENCE), and other studio pros, it's all more anchored flights than Rounders(beyond duo) usually managed. At leas thtree coulda-shouda been radio hits "Eyes Of A New York Woman," with lyrics by Thomas Pynchon, like a great lost Doc Pomus ballad, and "Somedays" and "Ducks" could've kicked the ass of BS&T, Chicago, Ides of March, re "horn rock". Both written by Trevor Koehler, who also played on someof Gil Evans's early jazz-rock sides. Nancy Jeffries in there between Antonia and almost an unwitting Baez parody, 'til my wooden ear grokked how well her pitch meshed with Robert Palmer's clarinet and soprano (He's the DEEP BLUES author, not the "Addicted To Love" 'un). Yall prob know all this butt I had to exclaim(good series of pieces on and by them at www.furious.com/perfect/insecttrust.html)

Don A, Monday, 27 September 2004 22:54 (twenty years ago)

I got Borrowed Time by Diamond Head and VI by Sweet this weekend. 2 bucks each. I like them both a lot. Especially that Diamond Head record. makes me want to buy a Diamond Head collection cd. Get it all, you know?

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 27 September 2004 23:24 (twenty years ago)

I scored a copy of Thelonious Monk & John Coltrane 2LP on Milestone and This is Johnny Cash on Saturday both for $1. I can't keep track of all the original Johnny Cash LPs, seems like there's always so much song overlap. But both albums are grebt.

mcd (mcd), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:13 (twenty years ago)

I got a load of things, as always. Best REISSUES of late are these, King Tubby "Roots of Dub"/"Dub from the Roots", LOVELY dbl Lp reissue of KT's first two albums on some German thing called Moll-Selekta, they have some other nicelooking stuff like a Cornell Campbell thing, and OH MAN LISTENING TO IT NOW IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL Al Green "I'm Still in Love with You" on Get Back which is part of the ABRAXAS empire which is I think my fav label(s) there is right now.

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 3 October 2004 10:26 (twenty years ago)

Get Back have replaced their generic rec labels w/nice enough matchingtypeface w/the cover ones, AND they're doing a mid or so price thing at the moment, I think. Go go go!

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 3 October 2004 10:30 (twenty years ago)

wish Get Back! would at least complete a series though. patiently waiting here for full Cramps (Ital.) catalog reissue (like Costin Miereanu, that Walter Marchetti record of bird calls, Giusto Pio on LP), and full ESP-Disk-closure (Alan Sondheim, Erica Pomerance, that sea chantys rec). they seem to have covered the BYG-Actuel though, a real service to mankind.

BbetaA, Sunday, 3 October 2004 14:12 (twenty years ago)

ESP have awesome "budget" price reissues of stuff by Red Krayola, Pearls Before Swine & Thirteenth Floor Elevators at least. Probably more, but those are the ones I've seen at the store.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Sunday, 3 October 2004 15:17 (twenty years ago)

Okaaaaaay, here is what i bought on friday at the thrift store and the record store. all original, no reissues, everything so clean yoo could eat off of it. spent 135 dollars. THE EXACT amount of change I had rolled and taken to the bank after scouring the house for accumulated quarters and such.

thrift strore:

Steely Dan - Gold (cuz the day before I was thinking that I needed "FM" on something. Be it the FM Soundtrack or Gold. And the lord heard me.)
Teen Scene - Various (Dylan, Raiders, DC5, Byrds, etc. I can never pass up Columbia Special Products.)
Herb Ellis & Charlie Byrd - Guitar/Guitar
A Varied Program Of Stereo Dynamics To Scare The Hell Out Of Your Neighbors (StereoFidelity/Somerset)
Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - Greatest Hits Vol.2
Rodgers - Slaughter On Tenth Avenue (cuz I'm all albout the LIVING STEREO)
Tobie Lurie - Word Music! (one of my fave bizarro CMS beat poetry spoken word stereo experiments ever! And I haven't a had a copy in years.)

Record Store:

Robin Gibb - Robin's Reign (perfectly perfect copy for five bucks. I never see that thing.)
Stiff Little Fingers - Hanx!
Tim Hardin - Suite For Susan Moore and Damion...(again, everything I got at the store was sooo clean. it's not like i never see this record, but for 3 bucks i get a pristine early pressing. nice!)
Byrds - Younger Than Yesterday (beautiful mono copy)
Stiff Little Fingers - Now Then...
Stiff Little Fingers - All The Best
The Bee Gees - Rare, Precious & Beautiful (3 Volumes. 1965/6 Brit Polydor Best-Ofs of their pre-66 hits.)
The Byrds - Turn!Turn!Turn! ('nother superclean mono copy)
The Byrds - Dr.Byrds & Mr.Hyde (stereo)
The Byrds - Mr.Tambourine Man (near mint mono)
Bee Gees - Idea
Beatles - A Collection Of Beatles Oldies (66 Parlophone best-of that makes me want the records on the inner EMI sleeve: Scaffold, Goon But Not Forgotten by The Goons, Simon Dupree & The Big Sound, etc.)
The Dickies - Dawn Of The Dickies
Sham 69 - The Adventures Of The Hersham Boys
Bad Brains - i against i
7 Seconds - The Crew (i might be an adult, but i'm a minor at heart)
Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers - Live at the Lyceum Ballroom 1984 ( i love this record. i sold my copy years ago. so hear i go again. i'll hold on to it this time.)
The Siegel-Schwall Band - Shake! (what a great sounding record. even for Vanguard.)
Tim Hardin - 2
The Byrds - Fifth Dimension (mono, dude.)
Hollies - Dear Eloise/King Midas In Reverse & Evolution (these were my fave finds. I've ALWAYS wanted nice clean copies of these records, and these are just beautiful. Perfect in every way.)

That's it. I was happy!

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 3 October 2004 15:46 (twenty years ago)

The other day when I returned my copy of Gounod's Faust to the record store (missing the second LP; has two copies of the first LP instead) I got:

Charles Ives - Complete Piano Works
V/A - Songs of the Sioux
Steely Dan - Can't Buy A Thrill
Rolling Stones - Their Satanic Majesties Request

and the other day I got from the dollar bin..
Steely Dan - Katie Lied
Steely Dan - Pretzel Logic
Yes - Tales from Topographic Oceans
Fleetwood Mac - Tusk
V/A - The Guitar and its Family Around The World
philip glass - north star

Ian c=====8 (orion), Sunday, 3 October 2004 16:09 (twenty years ago)

I was listening to lots of steely dan the other day. probably cuzza that thread on here. i can never decide what my favorite dan album is. i guess it depends on what's playing. i could never choose between katie lied and pretzel logic. they are both so great. i had forgotten how beautiful pretzel logic sounds. great sound for a band obsessed with sound.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 3 October 2004 16:16 (twenty years ago)

Yall prob know this but just in case: although a lotta late 60s/early 70s Miles is worth buying for the cover art (we haven't talked much about how much more impact cover art has on LPs vs. CDS, have we?), the, the music itself was compressed/cramped whenever it was like 30-to-40 (or more!?) minutes on one side of an LP. Anyway, been meaning to ask: what's the best online source for vinyl? (Don't worry, I won't grab what you were gonna get; aint got much money at *all.*)

Don, Sunday, 3 October 2004 16:20 (twenty years ago)

Skot, you are stoked to find a copy of Robin's Reign for five bucks!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 3 October 2004 16:21 (twenty years ago)

Yes, Tim, I was! And those Hollies records that I mentioned. They were 8 bucks each and well worth it. I always figured I'd have to break down and buy the cd reishes. It's just hard to find clean copies of those two records.

Don, ebay is still good for records. You can find some real bargains even now.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 3 October 2004 16:33 (twenty years ago)

"Kilburn Towers" is a good song on Idea.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 3 October 2004 16:37 (twenty years ago)

I got the Norton reissue of the Pretty Things' Get the Picture LP today and a nice copy of Tommy James and the Shondells' Cellophane Symphony. Can't listen to them, though, because my needle wasn't sounding good. The cantilever had fallen out while it was still in the package when I got it--We had to put the tiny rubber gasket back on it and stuff it back inside the little tube in which it rests. Records were sounding "spitty" and I realized the gasket had fallen apart. No way I can stuff it back in now! New needle time. Cannot listen to rekkerdz.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 4 October 2004 02:25 (twenty years ago)

damn, i want to hear Cellophane Symphony.

reo, Monday, 4 October 2004 03:00 (twenty years ago)

today at the thrift store i got quiet village by martin denny!

reo, Monday, 4 October 2004 03:03 (twenty years ago)

i got a bunch of stuff for 99cents on ebay. some durrutti column 12''s, David Bowie - Lodger, Dutch Black Sabbath GHs, etc

then I bought a reissue of Trans Europe Express for 9$ and the reunited Raincoats album for 3 bucks. i need a new needle too. is there some kind of recognized leader in needles?

artdamages (artdamages), Monday, 4 October 2004 03:03 (twenty years ago)

I think I'm getting my new one from here.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 4 October 2004 03:14 (twenty years ago)

Hey Don did you know I got "In a Silent Way" on Lp just recently? Well I did, I guess it's all compressed but it sounds great, not that I know the Cd to compare. I traded some pot w/that good friend of mine w/the records to spare for Martin Denny's "Exotica" (the one w/"Quiet Village" on it, woo), the Runaways' "Waitin' for the Night", the Only Ones' s/t record and Cabaret Voltaire's "Eight Crepuscule Tracks". All fine condition, too.

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 4 October 2004 05:00 (twenty years ago)

needledoctor is my favorite turntable porn site.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 4 October 2004 10:04 (twenty years ago)

i'm really bad when it comes to gear. when i need a new needle i usually just end up buying another turntable. but i get them cheap. i've never invested in a fancy one.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 4 November 2004 22:24 (twenty years ago)

You are a vinyl manimal. I am jealous. Always fun to read your lists...

mcd (mcd), Thursday, 4 November 2004 22:45 (twenty years ago)

Three pretty cool things a couple days ago; Bangles "All Over the Place", rules and now I get why so many people like them (aside from that they're chicks obv), "The Searchers File", the Searchers had about 20 magnificent singles and they're all on this, nice one Searchers, Waylon Jennings "The Dark Side of Fame", about 20 mins long but good, Waylon sounding croonier than later, rerelease of 'THE ONE AND ONLY W.J'

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Saturday, 6 November 2004 01:10 (twenty years ago)

Just got back here: Andrew, I'm glad you don't feel too compressed by the Miles. Actually I liked the occasional flatness or shallowness of some parts of it at the time; instead of hitting you over the head with echo or soething to emphasize what a great moment in music you are now expereincing, it's more like, ah yes another minute another moment. Lots more where that came from.

don, Sunday, 7 November 2004 03:01 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
I'm glad too! If I knew the Cd at all I'd prob agree more strongly, but yeah that sounds in keeping w/Miles etc's music at the time. Some stuff- just found Kris Kristofferson's "Jesus Was a Capricorn" opened but I think unplayed/mostly still in shrinkwrap (just a slit for the sleeve's um "mouth") for $2/free (I work at the store). Pretty great record, and opening a big 70s gatefold pic for the first time MYSELF was pretty cool. Um. Not THAT cool, of course, that'd be creepy and insane. About the actual music, I like how his voice has that wasted sound just from (I think) his having a pretty shitty range/tone, not ACTUAL degenerate wastosity. What else did I get? Mick Jagger's "She's the Boss", free too, what a fucking piece of shit (one listen but it'll be a while till I brave a second), I had some hopes for Okness due to Laswell/Rodgers (that was naive and stupid of me), they were dashed. A Get back RED VINYL T. Rex "The Slider", oh MAN that's a good rec, you know how you feel about it already tho I'd imagine, and something else. Oh yeah, a pretty nice 14track Marianne Faithfull singles thing. I had no idea she was so clearly in the (pop side of the) purevoiced English maiden folksinger tradition! Now I do!

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 11:38 (twenty years ago)

Just bought Mark Hollis' self-titled album. Now I can FINALLY spin "The Gift" when I DJ. Yay!

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 23 November 2004 11:46 (twenty years ago)

That's on vinyl? Yay!

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 11:50 (twenty years ago)

I should mention here the Cooper-Moore 5x7" box on which each side he plays a different instrument. Probably the coolest thing I bought all year. (I think it's on sale for $30 right now.) Actually this thing deserves its own thread.

mcd (mcd), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 12:36 (twenty years ago)

Damn! Where can I find that? What's it called? That sounds right up my alley.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 23 November 2004 12:42 (twenty years ago)

Below is the e-mail I got about it yesterday with lots of places to purchase. AUM Fidelity has some additional info on its site. Adam is a friend of mine from college, and real good people. I still need to start a thread about this.

Hi everybody. Thanks to those who came on out to the Isaiah Owens
performances + the WFMU record fair. Lots of smiles there.

The holiday spirit has gotten into me + I'm pleased to announce the
first ever 50MOER sale. If you can get the payment to me by December 15, the Cooper-Moore 5x7" box set can be yours at a reduced price of $30 ppd via Priority Mail, FOR UNITED STATES ORDERS ONLY. I'm sorry that I can't make this offer available to the out-of-country folk, but post costs are a knockout on this already financially-sketchy proposition.

We've got ~100 boxes left to sell, so now would be a good time to make
sure you can get it while the getting can be got.

All funds (check, money order, cash) must be made payable in US dollars to Adam Lore, *not* 50MOER, and sent to the address below.

Credit card holders can go forth to these outlets pick up the set (at
varying prices):
http://www.aumfidelity.com (who also has a holiday sale going on
now)

http://www.othermusic.com
http://www.yod.com
http://www.dtmgallery.com
http://www.twistedvillage.com (*Note this is a new addition to our
list
of C-M sellers*)

We've still got issue #2 in stock as well, dwindled down to ~50 copies. Email if interested.

all my best,
Adam

I got "Smile" on vinyl oh yippidy doo

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 3 January 2005 03:23 (twenty years ago)

i just mentioned that on another thread. that i saw it on vinyl but didn't buy it. maybe i still will.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 3 January 2005 03:24 (twenty years ago)

to-day I got John Fahey Georgia Struts, Atlanta Stomps and Other Contemporary Dance Favorites 2LP on Table of the Elements. It's a nice mix of the bluesy stuff and the more spare stuff. On hold is Love Songs of Lebanon on Folkways, which fucking rules but is $20.

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 3 January 2005 03:33 (twenty years ago)

I'm just listening now to the mysterious Terry LP entitled Rovji. I think Chris at fusetronsound.com still has copies of these! No one knows who Terry is or when this album was released, but people guess the '90s at some point. It's reminiscent of Simon Finn's Pass the Distance album, but with more of a Neil Hagerty sound. More well-produced than a Neil Hagerty record, though.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 3 January 2005 05:03 (twenty years ago)

Nice site Scott! Will kick back and peruse later. Done some fumbling around in the bins myself today and found a few cheap ones including...

Penetration - Moving Targets: I've been ignoring this one for years, ever since I first picked it up as a no-nothing kid thinking it was a Moving Targets record and quickly threw it back again in disgust, dismissing it as some load of old punk nonsense. But this was going really cheap and heck, it's pressed on GLOW-IN-THE-DARK vinyl and I haven't had one of those since my dayglo Liquorball 7" went walkies, so even if it does suck, at least I can still get high, turn off the light and just *behold* the fucker. Mmmm.
Only played the second side so far and almost fell off my chair... So when they talk about a Patti Smith influence on the UK punk scene, dammit, this is the record they're talking about right? Anyone rate this??? Much of it sounds a bit dull to me on first hearing, but there's some good stuff too... 'Movement' nice and bugged, sort of sounds like the missing link between Patti and the Dog Faced Hermans. And shit, that guitarist is great, in a smitten-w/Richard-Lloyd way. And that cover of 'Free Money' too (the Buzzcocks cover ain't so hot IMO)... hated the first 60 seconds sooo much for it's absolute facsimilie ridiculousness, but when the band kicks in, oh my, it's more like the fucking Blue Oyster Cult than anything else. Yes!

Salem 66 - Frequency & Urgency: What was it with Homestead and Boston bands in the 80s? Uzi, Big Dipper, the Volcano Suns, Sorry and who knows what else. Think Salem 66 will always be the ones I come back to out of that lot though and I was delighted to find this, still shrink-wrapped. I tell you, God sent me this today, and a God that likes Steve Smith is a-okay by me.

The Lounge Lizards - s/t: nice mint copy of the finest moment of the sharpest-faced motherfucker in the lounge lizarding business.

Man - Do You Like It Here Now, Are You Settling In?: Didn't really know a lot about these Welsh beardies, other than the drummer went on to play with Rockpile with Dave Edmunds and Nick Lowe, then wound up in Dire Straits. But this didn't look muck like pub rock - came out on United Artists in 1971 so I figured that with uh, Amon Duul and Hawkwind as labelmates, it had to be good for a couple of quid. Good it is too! Couple of quite straightforward things that sound a little like late Blue Cheer and another bunch of more complex prog-psych stuff that takes an Airplane/Dead sound and bends it round songs that are a more like later Pretty Things numbers. The last track's a monster BTW, a great pissed-off hippy stomper with nice Roger Chapman-esque vocals.
Dude, smoke one doob!

Also found a bunch of grotty looking King Crimson vinyl, but before I had a chance to rummage, little Bill, who'd been asleep in the backpack, woke up screaming and started tugging hard on my ears. Guess he could see his inheritance being pissed away penny-by-penny and wasn't having any of it. Don't tell him I'm sneaking back there tomorrow.

NickB (NickB), Saturday, 15 January 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry, that all came out as blah-blah-blah.

NickB (NickB), Saturday, 15 January 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

no need to apologize! thanks for sharing. now i wanna hear that penetration album.
