Why did country get so optimistic over the last 10 or so years?

It seems like from the 60s (or earlier) til the 80s most country songs were about sad subjects such as alcoholism, being in prison, or (especially) unfaithfulness in a relationship. Things started to change in the nineties and now it seems like all country songs are about having a good time or "how much I love my spouse and how beautiful my kids are". There are a lot of exceptions, I know, but in general I think these are the trends. Why did the themes of country songs change?

Well, the old, gloomy kind made lots of money for lots of people. Did it stop making money? Why?

It's hard to sell trucks with downer tunes.

It's not that it was unsuccessful, but I think in the 90s Nashville started making a lot more money with the happier and poppier sounding acts.

(Not that I think that old country was all sturm and drang anyway.)

Leon OTM. For every "Kids Say the Darndest Things" back in the day, there was a "Happiest Girl in the Whole USA." Today for every "Redneck Woman" there's a song on the charts like Brad Paisley's "Whiskey Lullaby." That's one sad sumbitch.
