splendid tune, this.

Brooks (or whoever the fuck wrote this) could buy and sell all of our asses with the karaoke royalties alone.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 12 August 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not the tune's fault, I suppose, but this fucker has been the soundtrack to a whole lot of frat-tastic brodeos.
This seems to be the country song that everyone knows, including people who know nothing about country music.

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 12 August 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Best mass-market country turn of phrase for that decade that I know of. And it does sound good -- the Kiss at the heart of Brooks' work (aim for it to be loud and catchy and sung along with at arenas) shines brightly here.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 August 2004 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

why does brooks insist on playing such wimpy sentimental ballads when he can write something as fun as this? that's the real question.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 12 August 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Because he's non-wimpy enough to like and not be threatened by sentimental ballads. (real answer - he likes Billy Joel too much)

Ned likes lyrics!

I love good titles. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 August 2004 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Where I come from, this song is very real. I hated that about it when I was younger, but now it makes me very happy.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Thursday, 12 August 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

"Two of a kind, working on a full house" was another great Garth title (though he didn't write that one).

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 12 August 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't get what you mean about "real" Sonny.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 12 August 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

This is good, but not as good as "The Thunder Rolls"

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 12 August 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

His cover of "Calling Baton Rogue" by Pure Prairie League (I think it was them at least) is his finest moment.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 12 August 2004 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark - when I was growing up, for example, my parents actually used to drink at a place called The Oasis. I understand that the larger 'theme' of the song -- feeling inherently out-classed and choosing to revel in it -- is something someone from anywhere could relate to. But only people from very specific no-wheres across the US, I think, could really have the kind of feelings I described as "real" above. My reaction to the song is very visceral -- it's actually put a tear in my eye on at least one occasion. Growing up, my father played in a regionally popular country band and I think they played a few Garth Brooks songs. He really hated Garth Brooks and would make sarcastic remarks about playing "bullshit sellout country" of that type. I could picture him showing up at a black tie affair and saying something tactlessly smartass, like in the song.

I forgot how good "Calling Baton Rouge" is. Also love "Much Too Young" and the sappy "The Dance" off his first album.

Sorry for the derail, but I hadn't ever checked out any of the other Chris Gaines albums.

Fornucopia was pretty decent, iirc.

xpost -- okay there has to be a poll.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 21 July 2011 18:13 (fourteen years ago)

Weird to remember how vastly over-corrected that porn-pop album by going all Christian rock for Apostle though.
