This is just a thread for anyone who has heard anything by this awesome band. I have their three most recent albums and I think they are geniuseses. They do metallic ska, dirty folk, sexy cumbia, techno funk, and gutter garage rock.

Plus they're funny as shit, if you know Spanish, and even if you don't.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 August 2004 13:34 (twenty years ago)

1. Their single "Sr. Cobranza" was banned in Argentina because they accused President Menem of being a large-scale drug dealer--by name--but it still was hugely popular.

2. Some of their song titles: "La Petisita Culona" ("the hot little woman with the huge ass"), "Coger No Es Amor" ("to fuck is not to love", because the former is much better than the latter), "Shit Shit Money Money," "Porno Star."

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 August 2004 13:39 (twenty years ago)

Fwiw you have certainly piqued my curiosity (looking them up, I'm seeing comparisons with Mano Negra, Maldita Vecindad, Los De Abajo, Cafe Tacuba, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs and I'm pretty fond of all of them; I wasn't impressed by Los Caifanes 'though....) but not enough to just order something on import, and their CD's don't appear to have been issued in the UK.

Ditto El Grand Silencio.

Incidentally, do you think I'd like Los Aterciopelados?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 13 August 2004 13:46 (twenty years ago)

Well, I like 'em quite a bit, Stewart, but I don't know if that will help. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 August 2004 13:49 (twenty years ago)

Hook a brother up!

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 13 August 2004 13:51 (twenty years ago)

That is ample and fulsome praise indeed master Nedwin.... why if only I could work out whether it was praise for Bersuit Vergabarat, El Grand Silencio or Los Aterciopelados, it might even be of some value to me! ;~)

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 13 August 2004 13:58 (twenty years ago)

The latter you crazy man, that was the one you were asking the question about! ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 August 2004 13:59 (twenty years ago)

Aterciopelados are more pretty/poppy than ruff/rowdy anymore, Stewart, but Gozo Poderoso is a fun little record that was worth the $9.99 I spent on it at Target. Other than that, I dunno.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:00 (twenty years ago)

I have been described as "crazy" by Ned "reads The Almanac" Raggett; truly now I can rest easy in the knowledge that my life has been a full and exciting one!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:02 (twenty years ago)

Hurrah! And just wait for the next release.

Said ruff/rowdy stuff on the earlier albums before the mighty fine Gozo is quite good, methinks.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:04 (twenty years ago)

Here is one person's take on their album Hijos del Culo.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:05 (twenty years ago)

I was actually looking in a curious sideways fashion at the Best Of which is apparently due out in a couple of weeks.

Any idea whether this favours their pretty/poppy side or their ruff/rowdy side?

It should probably go without saying that I'd prefer the latter!

Unfortunately I don't seem to be able to find a tracklist, so that isn't really a lot of help, is it?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:09 (twenty years ago)

Things that I liked about Bersuit Vergabarat IMMEDIATELY:

*they remind me a helluva lot of peak-era Fishbone, what with that whole so-many-crazy-ideas-yet-somehow-it-all-works thing they got

*they do something which seems very rare to me as far as rock bands go: they manage to be humorous but not come off as boobs - they deftly balance between the roffle, the topical, and the emotional

*I could imagine them putting on one of the greatest live shows I would ever witness in my span of time on this Earth

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:11 (twenty years ago)

Tracklist for that comp:

1. Cosita Seria
2. No Necesito
3. Quemarropa
4. Nada Que Ver
5. La Culpable
6. Expreso Amazonia
7. Miss Panela
8. Musica
9. Buena Estrella
10. Baracunatana
11. Platonico
12. Chica Dificil
13. Te Juro Que No
14. La Pipa De La Paz
15. Caribe Atomico
16. Maligno
17. El Pendulo
18. El Estuche
19. Bloero Falaz
20. El Album
21. Gozo Poderoso

Verdict?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:15 (twenty years ago)

Nicka, what of Bersuit's stuff have you heard?

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:19 (twenty years ago)

Stewart, that's essentially a version of La Pipa de la Paz plus cuts from the two following albums.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:26 (twenty years ago)

(Verdict -- as good a starting point as any!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:26 (twenty years ago)

okay enough already about atercio

here's a nice picture of Bersuit but it's not necessarily work-safe due to stuffed pants

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:31 (twenty years ago)

and here's a great Gustavo Arellano review, but only one of the two discs that make up La Argentinidad Al Palo*
http://www.ocweekly.com/ink/04/38/cd-arellano.php

*rough non-literal translation: Hey, Argentina, Get It Up!

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:34 (twenty years ago)

'S funny, if you all would live here and see (and HEAR) that stupid g.corcuera everywhere, you would hate him as much as we do. I guess it's something like that thing that some people on this board seem to have with mr. gillespie : dumb declarations, dumb politics, dumb looks. Maybe it's the charm of not having to deal with the context, isn't it?

BTW, "seƱor cobranza" is, indeed, a cover version of "las manos de filippi", another trad-rebel-rock outfit, although with more street cred and less class-contradictions.

fernando, Friday, 13 August 2004 14:51 (twenty years ago)

well that is probably the case up here as well, I notice that the S.American charts are all full of Evanescence

interesting that Cordera's overexposure is an impediment to you not liking his group's music. also interesting that you spell his name differently. is that an in-joke en espanol?

fortunately, I live in N.America so that stuff doesn't bother me one bit. I love this band, and they keep hitting #1 on the Argentine charts so apparently some of your countrymen do too.

what is the hip music down there for people who dislike Bersuit? I'm curious!

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:59 (twenty years ago)

overexposure? no! half-assed attempts to try and do every "latin-rock" trick in the book? yes!

fernando, Friday, 13 August 2004 15:08 (twenty years ago)

well I don't hate on those attempts, because they don't sound "half-assed" to me. but since you know more what's going on down there, who would you say is better? tell us, or we won't believe you and we'll go back to liking Bersuit!

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 August 2004 15:12 (twenty years ago)

tell us, or we won't believe you and we'll go back to liking Bersuit!

I'm allright with that, just keep'em away from me! :D

fernando, Friday, 13 August 2004 15:17 (twenty years ago)

fernando, why can't you just tell us who you like? or are you one of those people who just hate everything? DIGANOS!

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 August 2004 15:23 (twenty years ago)

Voltura. 'Cause I'm a sensitive indie kid. And Pablo reche, 'cause a I like my noise...noisy (And they're both playing tonight!) And the entire Ventolin records catalogue. That's what us hipsters like. I...think.

fernando, Friday, 13 August 2004 15:32 (twenty years ago)

*makes mental note about all this* Can I talk about Languis now? (The band, not the song.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 August 2004 15:37 (twenty years ago)

that's cool. I'm not really into anyone who creates "soundscapes," myself, or does 19-minute drone tracks, not anymore, except maybe Acid Mothers Temple. but rock on, fernando!

and get your languis to their own thread, nead. maybe we need a 'latin rock that kicks ass' dealie.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 August 2004 15:38 (twenty years ago)

But but but they drone too! ;-) They're actually a very interesting little band, and their LA relocation many years ago has helped give them a bit of a unique place.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 August 2004 15:55 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
Begs2Differ, I saw a snippet of Bersuit concert footage contained in a snippet of a new documentary (by Naomi Klein* and her husband Avi somebody) called The Take, which was shown on "Democracy Now!" tonight. Apparently they do a song that alludes to a factory "occupation" in which workers have reclaimed a factory that was shut after the big economic collapse and managed to hang onto it thus far (and operate it as a worker's cooperative). So if you are interested in Argentine culture in general or creative resistance to neo-liberalist economic policies, you might want to look into this film. Oh, and Bersuit sounded good.

*Who has not only been doing some really great articles lately, but is also cute, as it turns out.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Monday, 20 September 2004 23:43 (twenty years ago)

You know how it sucks when someone resurrects a thread just to post up his own review?Well okay then.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Monday, 1 November 2004 20:35 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
I still really want to hear them. They sound fantastic.

Where has Gaz gone???

.adam (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 January 2005 02:39 (twenty years ago)

I notice that they are compared to Los De Abajo. I love Los De Abajo.

.adam (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 January 2005 02:41 (twenty years ago)

Los de Abajo
is okay but there is no
comparison, dude;
