TS to end all TS: Acid Mothers Temple vs Boredoms

seems timely, seems wonderful.

i dont think i can decide. my inclination is boredoms, but i think that may just be because of their mystique and the fact that they are 100% un-prolific. only ever seen AMT live and only once, earlier this summer in baltimore, but it might have been the best show ive ever seen. so im torn. you?

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Boredoms because they don't charge $18 for a CDR

())(())()()()(()(LASER)()()()()()()()()(()()()()(()()()()) (ex machina), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Boredoms easy (and I like Acid Mother's Temple btw.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

cmon jon! i want more from you!

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Boredoms never seem to insult their fanbase -- their music seems to engage the listener rather than alienate the listener. I don't feel that they are particularly egotistical about the importance of their music and they let this show in the playfulness of their music. They have never released a bad record.

())(())()()()(()(LASER)()()()()()()()()(()()()()(()()()()) (ex machina), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

That's a bit bold. Some of their EPs are a bit dodgy.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

kawabata is really good to the fans, though... hes all over the message board, and seems like a humble, grateful guy.

how do you rank the boredoms records, jon? (i guess the proper ones is what i mean, but i havent heard the OOIOO stuff, so maybe rank all the boredoms stuff you like...)

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

"Proper"???!?! You mean the LPs?

(That said, I really dig on AMT, but some of the dodgy collector scumish releases are no good to fans)

no - proper like "boredoms", not "pica pica pica" or sideprojects, i guess. but then i changed my mind.

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, do Super Roots count?

())(())()()()(()(LASER)()()()LA(Z)E(R)()()()((L)()()(A)(S(E)R()()()) (ex machina, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

That DJ PICA PICA PICA record is one of my favorite Boredoms-related things!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

(Which is good cuz it costs an arm and a leg.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

ill admit, i paid 15$ for a (non-cdr, btw) tour-only cd, but i mean, its really a long 2 songs, and while maybe not quite as substantial as something like superroots ep's, its not just exploitation IMO.

that said, my voting for the boredoms is mostly based on superae, VCN, and two of the AE/VCN era superroots ep's ive heard.

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah - all ep's count! everything counts - i rescind my previous qualification!

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I think at their roots, these bands aren't very similar - I can easily see people loving one and not really getting into the other, or certainly liking one a lot more than the other. I choose Boredoms, and could probably take 5 of their records over the best AMT album.

the first 5 on yr proper-boredoms list are the 5 ive heard, and theyre all great. dleone is OTM i think about the two not being very similar, but theres a lot of simultaneous praise on ILM for them, and they are probably the two titans of current japanese psych, albeit different strains of psych.

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Acid Mothers temple has moments of cringeworthy cheese for me where they sound like a bad Hendrix knockoff (esp when the bass comes in on a 'shredding' number).

())(())()()()(()(LASER)()()()LA(Z)E(R)()()()((L)()()(A)(S(E)R()()()) (ex machina, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah but the 20 minute track on SR7 is as good as anything. I'd rather just have that than any OOIOO record.

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

acid mother's temple i really don't know very well (i've never heard more than a couple minutes of any of the records), i saw them on their first us tour and i thought they were pretty generic. i mean, in SF we had liquorball, monoshock, and tons of other bands that were on a similar tangent but much more excessive, raw, and out (and according to jack cole, will all be reissued very shortly due to the growing cult of blackjack records freaks).

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

as for boredoms/ranking boredoms, go into the archives and search the "boredoms - c/d" thread, that's a pretty cohesive thread, there's really not much more to reprise here.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

boredoms win purely on the fact that they dont put out dozens of shitty jam records every year like amt. kawabata is the hippy lou barlow for the 21st century.

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

he is the robert pollard for the psych-impaired.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

although that collaboration he did with richard youngs is really awesome.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i guess with the amount of records that pollard has put out, barlow at his peak of shitty, large output doesnt seem that big anymore. it's the evolution of releasing anything, barlow to pollard to kawabata.

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i dont know anything about blackjack records - whats the deal? s/d?

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Blackjack - 1990s, based in Oakland. Monoshock, Liquorball, Brainbombs, Coffee LP, Metabolismus LP, Icky Boyfriends, Bunnybrains...

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Boredoms never seem to insult their fanbase -- their music seems to engage the listener rather than alienate the listener.

Explain this Jon....I'm not a big AMT expert but I've listened to them and saw them live once and thought they were very polite and not at all trying to alienate the audience....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

whats the best blackjack stuff?

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I think he means insult by always offering really limited edition LPs and then reissuing them on CD with bonus tracks so you have to keep buying stuff

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

And thinking that we should take them seriously (They were very nice when I saw them)

())(())()()()(()(LASER)()()()LA(Z)E(R)()()()((L)()()(A)(S(E)R()()()) (ex machina, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Gygax! says: "i saw them on their first us tour and i thought they were pretty generic. i mean, in SF we had liquorball, monoshock, and tons of other bands that were on a similar tangent but much more excessive, raw, and out."

I haven't followed AMT at all, but would add that it at least seemed like we'd at least somewhat been through it all before with Ghost, the old Tokyo Flashbacks groups, all of Nanjo's groups, etc. No?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Well yeah, AMT are basically continuing the PSF legacy.

liquorball - fucks the sky
monoshock - walk to the fire LP & primitive zippo 7" & soledad 7"

also missing is Yamamoto's Crown of Fuzzy Groove (#4 for me)

"no. monoshock cds are usually cheap cuz no one cares but a few".

I care about Monoshock. _Walk to the Fire_ is plain great.
About the thread subject, I love both bands - if this can helps, AMT put out a lot of albums basically because this is the only way they have to make a living out of music. Boredoms had albums on major labels and sign deals, while Kawabata never cared about it.
I'm not saying this as a ethos/purity thing or whatever, it's just a matter of fact.

Free the Bee (ex machina), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Boredoms. I don't even like AMT, they just seem to bug me, don't really know why. Gygax reminded me of that Richard Youngs collaboration which is really great though.

strom (strom), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
I liked most of that collaboration, but found parts of it tended to get somewhat icky. Like a really sugary Four Tet or something. What's the Youngsbower record like?

MESTEMA (davidcorp), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

This is hands down boredoms!

i've enjoyed a touch of AMT, for the ost part second or third the opinion that its pretty much an indulgent and too often superficial version of a lot ofother sounds coming out of the modern japanese psych/rock scene.

boredomes have always been on their own limb and continue to stun.

Jon/Dom: have you heard the recent 12" that eye put out? i think they were selling it at the last short vice tour. goddamned great that.

bb (bbrz), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

xpost - Youngsbower is great, same vein as Sunroof but more electronic/bleepy/Harmonia
