rock bands using grime as an influence?

im listening to this guy chaki with all his early 80s (yet still oddly fresh sounding) new wave and electro influences and wondering if it would be a good thing for rockers to incorporate grime or that sort of thing into their music. it could result in something quite fresh. or something really really bad.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Thursday, 19 August 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

You forgot the Motley Crue.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 August 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

are they as good as more fire crew?

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Thursday, 19 August 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

What the hell is "grime"? This term is new to me.

darin, Thursday, 19 August 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

... and luckily it is over four letters

jake b. (cerybut), Thursday, 19 August 2004 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Chaki = Grime? WTF?

Xii (Xii), Thursday, 19 August 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The first rule of Grime is don't ask what Grime is.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 19 August 2004 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

You're all so uncool for even talking about it.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 19 August 2004 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

the second rule of grime is that nobody in America cares what it is (ie, the latest in a never-ending series of attempts for the UK to develop a response to American hip-hop.)

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 19 August 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Shakey what were the earlier ones? Jungle and 2-step might be responses to *something(s)* but not American hip hop precisely.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 19 August 2004 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

You're all so uncool for even talking about it.

hahaahahaha!!!!!!

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 19 August 2004 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

oh Soul II Soul, trip hop (Tricky was *dying* to be enshrined in the hip-hop canon), the Streets etc

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 19 August 2004 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

WTF??? i dont understand but THANKS for listening to my music :)

Sir Chaki McBeer III (chaki), Friday, 20 August 2004 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

you mean no-one outside of south london cares!

this question is pure inanity and so typical of the "grime is going to save us" bullshit you hear bandied about everywwhere at the moment.

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Friday, 20 August 2004 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

The whole question makes me think of Ian Penmans essay on "Maxuinquaye" where he talks about the inability of Rock fans to appreciate Dub for its own sake but go on and on about it's effect on "laggers like The Clash" (quoting from memory but i think that's correct). If you like Grime that's cool. If your waiting for Rock to latch on to Grime you're looking in the wrong direction.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 20 August 2004 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

more grime using rock as an infleunce plz

grimeist, Friday, 20 August 2004 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"oh Soul II Soul, trip hop (Tricky was *dying* to be enshrined in the hip-hop canon), the Streets etc"

Individual artists all (I don't even think Soul II Soul fit). Are people (or Brits specifically) not *allowed* to play around with the hip hop form? I don't think there are many fans of The Streets, say, who wouldn't also like US hip hop (and the only articles I've seen that have contradicted this were American!)

As for the actual question, I don't think there are many rock groups who could incorporate grime with any success, any more than there are many rock groups that can do the same for hip hop, R&B, jungle, 2-step etc. well (and it's telling that exceptions like the Junior Boys are almost coming more from the other direction, starting off very strongly in the 2-step/r&b camp musically and then tentatively moving towards rock).

The one time I thought rock bands could gain something from UK Garage was actually that period pre-grime when the rhythms started to sound really naturalistic and live-percussion funky (although still stop-start jittery) - think Sticky's "Boo" or London Dodgers' "Down Down Biznizz". It occurred to me at the time (late 01/early 02) that it could provide an interesting alternative to the spastic post-punk rhythms or Gang of Four repetitive hits that rhythmicentric rock bands have been going for these past few years. Sort of like an actually new update of Raincoats/Talking Heads etc. style polyrhythmic biznizz in rock.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 20 August 2004 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I only have Last Exit but I would never use the word "rock" to describe the Junior Boys. How do you mean?

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 20 August 2004 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah well exactly - but generally speaking the more recent tracks (ie. the ones done after the initial sampler) show a greater affinity for 80s post-punk, new romantics and ting. The two sampler tracks that didn't make the album - "You Want To" and "I'm So Into You" - are almost straight 2-step, closer to Horsepower Productions than anything else.

two guys in their bedroom (dizee and whiley) is not a movement. grim has nothing a rockbad could take on. its just rap with some dirty amateaurish skittery beats.,

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Friday, 20 August 2004 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha "Grim" would be great. Sadly "Grime" is much, much, broader than just Wiley or Dizzee.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 20 August 2004 04:29 (twenty-one years ago)

"Are people (or Brits specifically) not *allowed* to play around with the hip hop form? "

sure they are, it's just that no one in the US really cares. I mean, the mainstream hip hop audience in the US doesn't have any idea that "grime" even exists. Tupac didn't pay any attention to Tricky, knowhutimean? (and I say this as a fan of Tricky/Massive Attack et al)

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 20 August 2004 04:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah fair enough, I'm just not sure why ramming this home constantly is necessary in every thread on any of these topics. Apparently no-one in the US cares about the third world either.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 20 August 2004 11:18 (twenty-one years ago)

So grime is sub-genre of rap. Thank you. Jesus.

darin, Friday, 20 August 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Chaki/Dizzee collab now! Or maybe he could cover "Pies"...

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Friday, 20 August 2004 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Friday, 20 August 2004 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

sigh, Friday, 20 August 2004 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I hear Radiohead is using grime as an influence on their next album.

mcd (mcd), Friday, 20 August 2004 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

ilm isn't worth much more than cheap shots these days, lurker boy.

p.s. the question posed in the thread title is a GRAVE idea.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 20 August 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i can't think of anyone who could pull it off.

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 20 August 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

but then, have any ideas from the "continuum" post dnb been redigested in rock? (serious q, i'm not encyclopedic on this history by any stretch)

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 20 August 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 20 August 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

oh i see. i did ask 2 qns there didn't i.

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 20 August 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't quite see why that would be impossible: the er, rhytmic palette of jazz has been incorporated. If you believe the radiohead fans apparently those guys sound like ligeti and messaien! (or electronica). Lots of electronic arrangements elsewhere - and a machine like precision on the riffs too- is almost the norm here, but of course its all a trade off and you might lose the rocking-ness (I'm not saying this is good or bad but you could miss the forward drive); no wave showed you could even have a bit of opera in rock (john gavanti).

But of course enough ppl have to hear it first (which is maybe why the JB went in the opposite direction as tim states).
