is "revelator" even a word? even if it is not, it should be, so is traditonal music the last bastion of music originality, ie. is it easier to be cool if you're a hillbilly? does anyone care if you're as cool as gillian welch? is anybody listening?

(To answer your basically parenthetical question, yes, "revelator" is a word. I think the first time I came across it was in reference to Emanuel Swedenborg.)

Main Entry: rev·e·la·tor Pronunciation: 're-v&-"lA-t&r Function: noun Date: 1801 : one that reveals; especially : one that reveals the will of God

There, thirty seconds with an online dictionary. Wooohooo. And yes, Welch is not a hillybilly by birth, and neither is husband Rawlings, but authenticity, hmmmmmmmm... can one really control one's birthright?

Please see "John the Revelator," as sung by Son House. Please also see the Merriam Webster Collegiate Dictionary (10th ed.): "one that reveals; esp: one that reveals the word of God."

Any more thoughts on the new Gillian Welch album?

two weeks pass...
just trying to stimulate discussion on what is the best album i've heard in years. i see i have failed and i am sad on one hand, happy on the other in that i can relish this music in blissful solitude, which makes it even more special (isn't that what music gives us, a sense of belonging so personal that we must acknowledge we are in the presence of something greater? which makes us reach out, and write to this most impersonal medium of the internet?) that said, it would be nice to hear from someone so touched (i find the internet inherently sad, kinda like gillian's music). definition of art = something you create that is so personal you don't think it reaches anyone, but then it does, and it confirms the fact that we all really do need each other. This is not a sentimental disposition. The only reason the internet exists is from a need to communicate, despite the isolation required to create art. christ this sounds circular, full of irony. how beautiful. The only hope for humankind is to realize that what is within us as individuals is somewhere within all of us, and that this makes us complete as individuals. There is no collective, only all of us, islands linked by a beautiful shout. Gillian Welch is one of the most beautiful shouts I h
