I'm interested to hear what fifteen year-olds are listening to these days.

Wooden (Wooden), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

NIRVANA

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't even listen to Nirvana that much!

Uh oh. I gotta go. No, really.

Nowell, Monday, 23 August 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I really do gotta go in, like, one minute...

Nowell, Monday, 23 August 2004 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I may be back tomorrow.

Nowell, Monday, 23 August 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

WAIT!

(ha)

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 23 August 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I bet she likes autechre, Bardo Pond, Cocteau Twins, Labradford, Mogwai and Sleater-Kinney.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Monday, 23 August 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

every ILXOR should make nowell a mix.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 23 August 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i know two 15-year-olds: my friend's little brother and my friend's little brother's friend. the little brother seems to like modest mouse, and the one time i talked to his friend the conversation centered around liars' 'they were wrong, so we drowned'... he really liked it.

buggaloffs, Monday, 23 August 2004 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

As far as I know my 14 year old female cousin likes Eminem, but that was two years ago - who knows what now. If she came to visit maybe I'd burn her a copy of the first Le Tigre or something like that.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 23 August 2004 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I were your cousin.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Monday, 23 August 2004 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

you don't have the first Le Tigre?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

"I gotta go, I gotta go, I gotta go. Don't go. Ya see, something ain't right, it's the strobelight."

joseph pot (STINKOR™), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Melvins! Is was the Melvins in that picture! They'll save your life! Holla!

sexyDancer, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Goo Goo Dolls, Hole?

Oh, and maybe Porkshifter.

piers (piers), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

My daughter, who just turned 15 two weeks ago, is going through her Incredible String Band/Holy Modal Rounders/Michael Hurley/Peter Stampfel/Fairport Convention/Phil Ochs/Stephan Smith/Utah Phillips/David Rovics/Arlo Guthrie phase. She already *got rid* of her Le Tigre albums (not to mention Propaghandi/Anti-flag/Against All Authority, which she was liking a year or so ago). She has never had any use for Ani DiFranco.

chuck, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Can I have the Le Tigre?

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 00:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh god, I wonder what phases my future children will go through...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess I should just burn Liege and Lief for my cousin then, eh chuck?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, I had Unhalfbricking at 14!

derrick (derrick), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 05:18 (twenty-one years ago)

GG ALLIN

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 05:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm back.
Ah...I like PJ Harvey, even though she's a bit on the bony side and performs as though she is a tortured artist. (Actually, maybe that IS what I like about her. But not the really skinny part. Also, I wish I had stolen 'Rid of Me' from my bio-mom's former boyfriend, cuz I still haven't been able to get it.) And I do like Le Tigre.
The record I listened to while at my brothers' friends' house (when they weren't there) was the Notorious B.I.G's 'Ready to Die'. (It was theirs.) I once stole some records from some guy's car: The Specials hits collection, Husker Du's 'New Day Rising', the Velvet Underground's 'Loaded', Radiohead's 'OK Computer', and the Clash's 'London Calling'. (When the cops started coming around, I had to throw them all away so I wouldn't get busted.) Also, I stole some records from a lady I didn't like: Beck's 'Odelay', Alanis Morisette's 'Jagged Little Pill', the Smashing Pumpkins' 'Siamese Dream' (didn't work, so I don't really know if I like 'em or not), and some (crappy) Beatles hits record. Again, I stole Coldplay's 'A Rush of Blood to the Head' from that boyfriend of my mom's. (The only song I like is "God Put a Smile Upon Your Face".) Some records I have that I lost (and still haven't bought again): the White Stripe's 'White Blood Cells', Hole's 'Live Through This' (when I first heard it, I thought it sucked, but then I took some time and got into it and realized it was really a great record), and Nirvana's "greatest hits" collection.
Also, I like the Pixies, but when I first heard 'Surfer Rosa', I thought it sucked, but I - again - took time to listen and now I like them.
That boyfriend of my mom's had the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' 'Fever to Tell'. Again, when he let me listen to it, I thought it was shit. But later -much later - I heard "Maps" and went out and bought it. Why I didn't like that record before, I don't know.
I like some stuff that would be considered lame, too, like Prince.
(Also, I don't steal anymore. Stealing is wrong!)
That's it for now.

Nowell, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I bet you don't download mp3s, either.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, has anybody ever done a thread on the best records you've ever STOLEN?? That's be cool. I stole a Jethro Tull eight-track once when I was 13, on my morning paper route. But I don't think I ever actually listened to it. (I don't think stealing from family members should really count, though; that's more like "borrowing and conveniently forgetting to return," not quite the same thing exactly. Also, stealing while working in record stores is too easy, maybe.

chuck, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Honest to God, I don't even know how to download anymore.
I'm not allowed to, either.

Ok, I'll be a little more honest with you - my bio-mom stole those records with no intention of keeping them. She was going to sell them.
But I wanted to keep 'em cuz I liked 'em. She also stole the CDs from that lady we didn't like, but those CDs were so busted up. (Although I do have fond memories of running on the beach with my portable CD player, listening to 'Odelay' on my headphones and just being fascinated by it.) But her former boyfriend let me borrow the Coldplay record, I just didn't give it back. (I lost it, by the way.)

Nowell, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Once upon a time I worked a scam at Tower trading in old CDs for new ones.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

You think Prince would be considered lame here? You are naive.

Huck, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

"bio-mom" sounds like a comic book on the simpsons

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, good. I love Prince. But he's all religious now. And it sucks that he doesn't like that the Foo Fighters covered 'Darling Nikki'. He says they should write their own songs. And then he went on to mention that if anyone did Aretha's 'Respect', he would shoot them himself (or something). And that song itself is a cover! And HE has covered other people's songs! Crazy.

(And I just mean that she is my biological mother. I mentioned before that I live in a foster home - a therapeutic foster home. Apparently they think I have problems, cuz my brothers live in a normal one.)

Nowell, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

If you see Prince, tell him to stop covering my song "Raspberry Barette" I'm fucking fed up.

Huck, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Mm-hmm.

Nowell, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, "Little Rad Corvair", the jig is up, my adpurpleversary.

Huck, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

"Prince's attitude doesn't extend to his own music -- shockah!" (M. Matos)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

>it sucks that he doesn't like that the Foo Fighters covered 'Darling Nikki'. He says they should write their own songs<

Ha ha, Metal Mike Saunders hates that they covered the Angry Samoans' "Gas Chamber," too (especially because the Samoans weren't asked to appear on said anti-Bush compilation album it appeared on themselves.) (But maybe also because the Foo Fighters are one of the lamest excuses for a successful rock band in recent human history.)

chuck, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, I don't think the Foo Fighters are so bad. But you're entitled to your own opinion.

Man, I am so goddamned diplomatic.

Nowell, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

When I was 15 my favorite bands/artists were:
Tom Waits
Sonic Youth
Nirvana
Black Flag
Sex Pistols
Guided by Voices
Pavement
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
Palace
PJ Harvey
Captain Beefheart
Gene Vincent
The Stooges
Velvet Underground
Helium
Chavez
Superchunk
jeez, I could keep going but you get the idea

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

When I was 15 my favorite bands were:

Oingo Boingo
Depeche Mode
Love and Rockets
Beastie Boys
Run DMC
The Vandals
New Order
The Woodentops
R.E.M.
Dire Straits
The Cure
whatever they were playing on KROQ

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

When I was 15 I liked Garbage and Alanis and Bush and Metallica.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

You're saying I like what all fifteen year olds like. Well, not the ones I know...

I don't like Pavement. I think they're overrated. But "Cut Your Hair" is a good song.

I've never heard Tom Waits...or Superchunk, or Gene Vincent, or Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, or Palace, or Captain Beefheart, or Guided By Voices, or Helium, or Chavez (although I know a guy I hate whose name is Chavez.) I've heard of all those bands, but I've yet to actually hear their music. I like the Sex Pistols (but I don't have 'Nevermind the Bollocks'.)

Nowell, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

damn I forgot REM, I had all of their CDs!

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Nowell: Johnny Rotten is why Eminem is called punk rock.

chuck, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I like Nirvana and shit because the music is pretty dark. When you're a teenager, you wanna be sad - you're moody.

Nowell, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

X post
Why?

Nowell, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

shit I was a huge Flaming Lips fan as well... ah memories...

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm the geek in my family. My brothers all like the latest rap hits. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Other kids consider them cooler than me.

Nowell, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

The best thing that Foo Fighters ever did was to have Chick Corea perform with them at the Grammys. (The performance itself wasn't that great, but the idea of playing with Chick was kind of cool.)

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm!

Nowell, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

15-year-old Jaymc rants about the increasing homogeneity of alt-rock radio

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

No, the best thing the Foo Fighters ever did was "Everlong," which on most days I think trumps anything Nirvana ever did.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

In New York next week, there is a multi-band show called "Tribute to Lollapalooza." I have no idea what that means, but one of the bands is actually called "Faux Foo"! Which may make them the most pointless concept band ever, if I'm understanding their name correctly.

chuck, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

NOWELL BUY THE MERZBOX

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Friday, 27 August 2004 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Um. Nowell?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 27 August 2004 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm FINALLY back!
But I'll only be here for, like, two seconds. Then you probably won't hear from me for a while again.
It's cuz of high school.

Nowell, Monday, 30 August 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Sucka. I don't start school for another WEEK.

Did you grab any of those albums?

Ian c=====8 (orion), Monday, 30 August 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Back, again.
Now, I only have about 15 minutes. Probably less.
No, I didn't get any of those albums. I'm broke!

Nowell, Monday, 30 August 2004 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Aaargh, I have a Hole song stuck in my head now.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Back!
FINALLY!

Nowell, Thursday, 2 September 2004 01:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I said, I have a Hole song stuck in my head now.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Saturday, 4 September 2004 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

NOWELL GET SOME BERLIOZ OR THE VAMPIRES WILL KILL YOU IN YOUR DREAMS

AaronHz (AaronHz), Saturday, 4 September 2004 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
Who else thinks that Nowell is a 30 year old narc? Anytime she/he writes anything I just picture Jon Cryer in Hiding Out or one of the Jump Street gang...

ianinportland (ianinportland), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no idea what to say to that.
I swear that I am who I say I am..
It hurts my feelings that you think that.

Nowell, Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

You're trying to make me go away!

Nowell, Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi Nowell
We're not trying to make you go away, we just like teasing you.
But we mean no harm.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

You should get into Robag Wruhme.

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I get offended really easy...I'm sensitive.
And I look for stuff that upsets me.
I can't really explain it...
I listen to what everybody says - like magazines and movies and doctors. Shit!
This must seem weird.

Nowell, Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that a poem?

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

You like Bukowski, right?

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

No, smartass.
And reading Bukowski makes me feel...inadequate.

Nowell, Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

fancy a fruitcake, nowell?

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not saying anything about all this. With my last input re: Nowell's true identity I think I alienated Ned once and for all and sounded like a hag.

I'm sorry that you were homeless and on drugs, though Nowell. Music addication is a far more rewarding path, after all.

Thea (Thea), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

It is true that my ass is smart. It looks good wrapped up in a bow.

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm easy to pick on, right? Fuck!

And I was NEVER on drugs. Well, I guess I was. But not illegal ones. I'm still on drugs, actually!

Nowell, Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't mean to hurt your feelings, Nowell, but I still think that your a narc.

ianinportland (ianinportland), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

"you're"

ianinportland (ianinportland), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Xpost

Well, whatever. Fuck it.
You're entitled to your own opinion.
FYI, I'm not a "narc"!

Nowell, Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

"addiction"

Thea (Thea), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Why do y'all have ta be so mean?
I'M GONNA CRY!

Nowell, Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

You tell 'im.
I don't think you're a narc.
He's just mean.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm kidding.
But I don't like that you don't like me. I don't like nobody that don't like me!

Nowell, Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Has this been discussed before? Have other ILMer's identities ever been called into question? (Full disclosure: I'm actually John from Topeka.)

ianinportland (ianinportland), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Stop teasin' me! I CAN'T TAKE IT!

Okay, I am Noel from Kauai. There, I said it.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

*rather belatedly averts one's gaze from adam's bowed up ass*

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I was born in Long Beach, California. I was conceived on Kauai.

http://nowell.youaremyfriend.com/
What the fuck is that?

Nowell, Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

=0

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

oh Kauai is great but the comedown's a bitch.

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't dislike you. I just get the impression that you aren't who you say you are. Details of your life and the some of the comments that you make just seem to set off alarm bells in my head. I can't quite put my finger on what exactly it is though...

ianinportland (ianinportland), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

got any more, I'm fucking jonesing like a schenectady wombat?

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you might have scared Nowell off.
She's a timid creature, you know, like a mouse, or a hampster.
Or maybe she's not, whatever.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

isn't it "hamster"?

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't sentences start with a capital letter?

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

UEA taught you well. Me...less so.

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I think I read that capital letter thing in an issue of 'Concrete.'

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I read the big sex survey and felt very...vanilla.

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha, me too.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

You all really get off on picking on me.
Especially the British guy...he is British, right?
I'm not timid. I'm just sensitive.

Nowell, Thursday, 23 September 2004 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

FUCKING A, I wrote my post like a fucking poem again.

Nowell, Thursday, 23 September 2004 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Half the people here are British!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 23 September 2004 05:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Take some advice from somebody that's been around this stuff for years. By explaining about how you're just like a "15 year old girl" so much, you're giving it away in no uncertain terms that you're not one. A basic rule of thumb for fooling people is you let them come to you. You become what you set out to be, you keep the explaining to yourself and you talk and act out from there. You don't just say "look at me, I have the qualities a 15 year old girl is supposed to have" to the people you're trying to convince. And you sure as hell don't ask those same people what you're doing so wrong that they ain't buying it.

George, Thursday, 23 September 2004 06:39 (twenty-one years ago)

George nails it. Thanks George.
