any good San Francisco electronic producers or DJs...

i'm on the hunt for some Bay Area-based DJs and electronic producers that are kinda off the radar/up-and-coming and deserving of some coverage... moreso the Mochipets than the Matmoses (who i love, but are already known, hence not fitting my criteria) ... any suggestions/recommendations?

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that the name of your "new thing", gygax? that is beyond irony.

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

actually i believe that is jax0n friend's band.

i just realized the guy wanted to know about electronic producers. what exactly is an electronic producer?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Big Techno Werewolves is Eric from Crack We Are Rock & DJ Shitbird and the Ultimate Party Machine and a few other kids making noise. i've never actually seen them. the one show i went to, i just caught the last minute. supposedly they only played one note the entire show.

JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow. i should get out more.

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought dj shitbird closed up shop or something (according to the comets on fire article last in the guardian last week)?

JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't he work where I used to work?

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

yes

JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there anyone in SF making worthwhile techno, beyond the oldschoolish crew of Sutekh, Twerk, Safety Scissors, Kit Clayton, Soft Pink TruthBroker/Dealer? Dave Aju is the most recent person I can think of (releases on Circus Company), but as far as techno (in the very broadest sense) goes, I can't think of anyone worthwhile here in the Bay. I'd love to be proven wrong though.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Have you hear the Mei Lwun presents Uno Records mix that Tim F. recommended. It's definitely house, but very micro.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i propose we start calling micro house "Doll House"

JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

ah yes, broker/dealer. they have a recent remix on traum that you should check out.

the young and the guestlist... HAHaha... barf.

has anyone ever heard up and coming dj ph1l1p sh3rburn3?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I have, he's schaphiltastic!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

i heard: that he sold all his microhouse 12"s and is listening to power electronics.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope not!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

(ps, I get it.. sort of)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

newer school electronic SF comes correct:

nate boyce (aka Men Against Mountains)
christopher willitts
C.M.A.U.
Kendra Juul
Snowsuit (aka Steve Touchton from XBXRX)

love on ya,

Drew

Drew Daniel, Thursday, 26 August 2004 07:22 (twenty-one years ago)

seconded, though definitely a world away from techno. except for Willits, who actually has been leaning towards 4-to-the-floor in recent sets... in his own chin-strokingly tasteful way.

Since you mentioned Mochipet (i.e. danceable), I would add Eats Tapes, but Sherburne's right; there was a brief time in the late 90's early 00's when minimal techno flourished, but things have swung way back into weird again, closer to the SF tradition.

CMAU at their best is a fearsome beast, and Hans Grusel's Krankenkabinet is currently my favorite Caroliner side project. They are incredible and do not miss an opportunity to see them.

i met a guy that goes to Mills (all i know is that his name is Matt and he's a tall blond guy w/glasses) did this project where he made the pitches and length of his electronic piece coincide with where the balls land on the court of a game of tennis. pretty trippy shit.

JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 26 August 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Mills is still the hotbed. bookmark: http://www.mills.edu/music/mills_calendar.html

though that link only contains the official concerts, and not the students' thesis concerts & impromptu shows. those, you have to hunt down: I recommend the bay area new music events list (just the events list; the main list is an often horrifying gripefest discussion group).

but still, absolutely bizarre lineups materialize at Mills that rarely receive any press. Concerts like September 3rd are not rare, and typically receive zero coverage even in Berkeley; absolutely never in SF.

The sept 10th show isn't slouching either.

(Jon L), Thursday, 26 August 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Fantatsic. This is just what i have been looking for.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 26 August 2004 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

by the way, thanks for all of these...

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 26 August 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Does the Deletist have any recognition in SF? (This is a pure curiosity-question.)

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 26 August 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

the september 3rd show is the kind of show I'd be condemned to witness over and over in Hell

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 26 August 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

why

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 26 August 2004 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

what?

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 26 August 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i was just being cheeky. I'm not a SGM fan but I've heard interesting things about toychestra.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 26 August 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Death Ambient = Fred Frith Kato Hideki Ikue Mori

Toychestra is super wonderful. Haven't heard Carla since Ethyl Meatplow days so who knows.

(Jon L), Thursday, 26 August 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

death ambient need to come up with a better name with a lineup that interesting

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 26 August 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
my best friend and his gf go to mills. they were at a concert and Frith came up to her and asked her how her summer was and appologized for not being able to make it to her graduation party (which i was at)

*swoon*

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 17 September 2004 05:49 (twenty-one years ago)

WHAT?

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 17 September 2004 05:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Frith is very approachable, unless you come on too worshipful

ken: definitely check out an Eats Tapes gig. saw them two weeks ago at a friend's party, very very good dance music

(Jon L), Friday, 17 September 2004 06:05 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
The Safety Scissors record is good.
