Baby Ford! Dan and I can't be the only fans

In that I'm listening to BFord9 for the first time in forever and he surely must feel the same about such brilliance as "RU486" as I do.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 August 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Baby Ford but I've only got a couple singles.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 26 August 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, and "Fetish" is even better than I remembered. Fuck electroclash.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 August 2004 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

the pain teens had a great song of their own called "RU486." i didn't realize it was a trend.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 26 August 2004 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

That 1 quid copy of Ooooo...The World Of Baby Ford may turn out to be one of the best investments I've made in the past 8 months.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Thursday, 26 August 2004 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

got to meet Peter in Valencia, of all places. he played a bangin' set, switching it up at every measure. those rollin' in the audience were tearing at their clothes like werewolves, it was so pummeling.

BbetaA, Thursday, 26 August 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i would love to get that album on cd .. i played the cassette to death . same goes for the first album. though the album i have on Touch (??) was pretty dire as it had none of the fun, just dry improvised techno .. yawn-fest stuff.

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 26 August 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to love some of that ifatch stuff. Just getting down to the Soul Capsule tracks on the the melchior productions cd as we speak.

this stuff is so killer.

hector (hector), Thursday, 26 August 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I like him! I even gave his debut album a very nice review in Rolling Stone!! A few years later, though, I heard one of his later albums (or maybe his only one? i dunno), and it was WAY less entertaining.

chuck, Thursday, 26 August 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

By "debut" I mean the "Ooo...the World" one; I *assume* that was his debut anyway...

chuck, Thursday, 26 August 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

"FETISH"

mind is blown now (Dan Perry), Thursday, 26 August 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I even gave his debut album a very nice review in Rolling Stone!!

Haha, I was thinking about that review when I was posting the question! I remember you quoting that great weird psychedelic rant in the liner notes.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 August 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you'd think some parts of BFord9 would drag a bit, Chuck, but it has songs on it like "Disconoddy" which are euphoric dance fun and all.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 August 2004 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i have a few ifach 12" that were pretty freaky .. but the b-ford album i have aint ifach .. tis a lot more lowkey than those 12"s. remembered .. headphoneasyrider .. not that impressed with that one ..

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 26 August 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

post-BF work like headphoneasyrider and Birds effective in its Sähkö-style economy but seriously lacking in the joy of The World of.../Ford Trax. BFORD9 was the magic moment between youthful decadence and (ugh) maturity.

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Thursday, 26 August 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I love his version of Children of the Revolution from OOO...The World of. One of may favourite Bolan/T.Rex covers. I too am enjoying the second disc of the Melchior Productions cd. How are people finding the Force Trax album Ford put out last year?

paul c (paul c), Thursday, 26 August 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't know he did. What was the title?

hector (hector), Thursday, 26 August 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Baby Ford was fantastic. There's ne'er a better moment in acid house than Oochy Koochy, nor a better B-side than Flowers. O/K is a sultry, floor-burning monster that feels like a sparkling nova of disco, pop, house and acid hallucinations. Just turn up the bass and let the liquid seep from your head down to your dancing boots.

Ford DJed at this near-empty warehouse party in Melbourne a few years ago as part of the Rephlex tour. I thanked him for whole of 1988.

Fetish and the Ifach gear is pretty good too but he kind of tapers off beyond that. I always thought Children of the Revolution was pretty lame.

Stephen Stockwell (Stephen Stockwell), Thursday, 26 August 2004 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

headphone easyrider 2nded.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Friday, 27 August 2004 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Hector

The Force Inc cd is "Basking In The Brakelights" http://www.discogs.com/release/204573

paul c (paul c), Friday, 27 August 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Another shoutout for B Ford 9 and Ford Trax (the latter of which I got in exchange for a coin in a charity box in a shop round the corner from me), and for his set at ATP last year which I recall being supremely unpretentiously danceable.

DJ Mencap0))), Friday, 27 August 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I *prefer* his version of Children of the Revolution to the original (but then I did hear Baby Ford's version first, so I suppose it became the canonical version in my head).

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 27 August 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

playing at wang sept 4th.

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 27 August 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

So he just rereleased that album on Perlon?

That is weird that he didn't get European distribution on that the first time around.

hector (hector), Friday, 27 August 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess so. Could it be because of Force Inc's involvement with EFA and the latter's recent demise?

paul c (paul c), Friday, 27 August 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

chikki chikki ahh ahh

i have a bunch of killer baby ford stuff but i'm reluctant to talk about it. baby ford can be a dj's fave (semi-)SECRET, after all.

duke guerilla, Friday, 27 August 2004 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

c'mon, duke, give up the goods!
i've just been digging into the soul capsule material w/ melchior lately, enjoying a lot of it. also seek out their work (also including tim hutton, i think) as sunpeople.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Friday, 27 August 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i got that ifacht collective cd on a whim a while ago, cause i vaguely recognised the name and also mark broom has something to do with it....(also it was very cheap)

anyway, some of it is really nice, particularly the track with the piano loop (track 10 i think)
the first three tracks are also good, cant remember much of the rest to be honest...

robin (robin), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh wow, I'd never heard of him before but today I was listening to "Cold Sweat" on StaticBeats Chill Internet radio.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

five months pass...
"Children of the Revolution" still rules (he says, listening to it now).

Baby Ford is appearing in Brighton (DJ set I think, but might be live, in a few weeks... let you know more when I know more.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 28 February 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
why is "Ooo" The World of Baby Ford rated so low on discogs? it's great!

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Monday, 13 November 2006 22:33 (nineteen years ago)

Good question, although Ford Trax kills it.

gwynywdd dwnyt fyrwr byychydd gww (donut), Monday, 13 November 2006 22:40 (nineteen years ago)

his soul capsule stuff kills everything

The Android Cat (Dan Perry), Monday, 13 November 2006 22:43 (nineteen years ago)

I I love it
no, I love it
NO I LOVE IT!

my fave Baby Ford trax are "Wigan" (which would include the spoken interlude) and "20 Park Drive"...and "Disconoddy"!...and "Blow Back"!...my, but the hits just keep on comin'!

Baby Ford was in heavy rotation on the old Alan Oldham radio show in Detroit...very popular with the techno guys, by all accounts...

ohh la la...disco me to ecstasy...

man the headphoneasyrider haters upthread are crazy. this has way more bounce than sahko.

resolved, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

this is great!

resolved, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 15:30 (eighteen years ago)

yeah - i suspect i need to listen to it again.
weirdly i was thinking this only yesterday as for last 2 days i haven't listened to anything by Richard H Kirk, and Dust Science releases, and the headphoneeasyrider album will probably totally fit in with that lot now.

mark e, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

dumbassme : meant to say '.. haven't listened to anything else but..'

mark e, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 15:44 (eighteen years ago)

if i was listening to this in 2004 i probably would have thought it was boring too. i'm in love. maybe not much point unless it's on loud over a decent stereo though.

resolved, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 15:49 (eighteen years ago)

maybe not much point unless it's on loud over a decent stereo though.

or on headphones. i am so off to the archive to dig this out now.
despite not having had any desire to listen to this in years, i know EXACTLY where it is, and thats saying something ..

mark e, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

i dunno, i don't find headphones work at all for this type of music (despite the title). maybe just me but i prefer my techno bouncing around the room.

resolved, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 15:53 (eighteen years ago)

i mentioned on another thread about finding his "children of the revolution" cover and being nauseated at the sleeve art, lot's of disgusting cyber-goth fonts and for some unknown reason a big goldfish poking out of the foreground. so tacky. and the tune is awful. but as a noob of course i love his later stuff. the recent soul capsule release on perlon is incredible, and "law of grace" is yoga flame for all time. also love the recent track he did with zip. haven't heard the ifach collective album on klang, can anyone recommend it?

r1o natsume, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

i would love to find that ifach collective on cd.
if its the one that collects all the 12" singles together ? if so, then i once saw it and let it go.
i have a few ifach 12" and they still stand up as raw detroit styled techno. ie. they are glorious.

mark e, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

the ifach collective album on klang isn't a 12" collection nah, it's baby ford and people who record on ifach collaborating on a couple of 12"s and a double LP for Klang (all combined on the CD). it's good -- i'm preferring headphoneasy rider so few though. and basking in the breaklights. (nb i have the 2xlp but not the two 12"s that are also on there. so missing out on some of the best tracks in making my appraisal.)

resolved, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

*so far

resolved, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

and as far as soul capsule goes don't neglect their other 12"s on trelik! esp overcome. available on a p2p near you.

resolved, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

i think <a href="http://www.discogs.com/release/116418";>this</a> is what mark e wants (and <a href="http://www.discogs.com/release/121344";>this</a> looks cool too)

<a href="http://www.discogs.com/release/30969";>this</a> is what r1o natsume is asking about

resolved, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

ok well at least i make an effort

resolved, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

i think this is what mark e wants (and this looks cool too)

this is what r1o natsume is asking about

resolved, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

resolved - yeah i do indeed want that IFACH cd.

mark e, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

ps resolved : dust science is easily in the same ball park these days, totally recommended.
the compilations are cheap - and prove that this type stuff is still worthy of interest. i have a cracking derailleur mix i can send your way if interested in hearing more ..

mark e, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

sure. i can hook up the ifach collection cd too.

resolved, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 17:37 (eighteen years ago)

will send over location .. (its a legit online mix - nothing illegal going on here!)

mark e, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 17:47 (eighteen years ago)

ok. dug out the headphoneasy rider album.
i was indeed wrong. it totally sounds right in 2007.
subsequently, i have tracked down that ifach vol 1 cd as well.
oh yes.
