This is the thread where I tell you that the New York Public Library is CRUNK AS FUCK.

Today's haul includes David Banner's "Mississippi" and Lil' Flip's "U Gotta Feel Me".
Those of you who live in the city and don't take advantage of the amazing diversity and ease of access that the NYPL offers are cheating yourself.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 27 August 2004 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

That reminds me... I keep meaning to get a new library card.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 27 August 2004 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Additional haul: Iron + Wine "Our Endless Numbered Days", Dead Prez "Revolutionary but Gangsta", Belle and Sebastian "Dear Catastrophe Waitress" and Steve Reich with the Kronos Quartet "Different Trains".

It's an opportunity to listen to Deathcab for Cutie without buying it! (ditto ICP, good charlotte, alien ant farm, etc.)

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 27 August 2004 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a near mint copy of David Banner "Mississippi" on 2xLP if someone would like it for a nominal price of $5 (plus shipping if you can't pick it up in person).

o. nate (onate), Friday, 27 August 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to take LPs out of the Grand Army Plaza library all the time. Are they still lending those out?

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 27 August 2004 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Not sure, but the Donnell library has a bizarre soundproofed "Young Adult" section (that was bumping jadakiss the last time i was there) with a LARGE selection of what you would find at your local Sam Goody's. And the downstairs is a lifetime worth of exploration.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 27 August 2004 02:32 (twenty-one years ago)

The Jefferson branch (the repurposed church on 6th Ave near Greenwich in the West Village) has a rather depressing CD collection, unfortunately.

Joseph McCombs, Friday, 27 August 2004 02:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't know a single public library that still lends vinyl. most of 'em seemed to have trashed their collection.

the nypl sounds amazing.

can't you go on their internet site and order something in the citywide collection to be delivered to your local library for pick up within 3 days? so my friend tells me.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Friday, 27 August 2004 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Agreed on the Jefferson Market branch though there are occasionally breakthroughs.

amateur: that is correct and yes. You need to have a library card in New York and then go here. They can let you know by email when the CD comes in. It's like amazon but it's free.

This is why I can't leave New York.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 27 August 2004 03:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Forksclove, this is good to know in case I actually get off my ass and move to NY in two years (a def. possiblity). Much appreciated.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 27 August 2004 03:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I went to Donnell on Tuesday -- the only day it is open til 8, to find some audio books on CD. Unfortuantely they only had a handful (including such chaff as Nicholas Sparks).

57 7th (calstars), Friday, 27 August 2004 03:51 (twenty-one years ago)

of course if you belong to a large academic library and abuse the ILL system you don't really need the nypl.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Friday, 27 August 2004 03:53 (twenty-one years ago)

though i'd really like to see ads in the subways that read "the NYPL is CRUNK AS FUCK" above a picture of lil' jon waving copies of manhattan transfer cds and stephen king novels

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Friday, 27 August 2004 03:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Can I tell you that when I saw "U Gotta Feel Me" on the shelves, I loudly said "Oh, fuck YEAH!" and the two teenage asian girls who were processing CDs behind me started giggling.

Who do you suppose is doing their ordering? Because the Young Adult CD section is a weird mix of your supercool uncle's "what you should be listening to" (Early Ig and the Stooges, early Stones, lotsa Beatles and Zappa), what the kids really ARE listening to (aforementioned ICP, Good Charlotte, Evanescence) then a bunch of GREAT hip hop (NWA, Missy, Pac, Nas, Biggie, P.E., Eric B and Rakim) and loads of indie (shins, radiohead, deathcab, pretty much the entire b+Sebastian run from the past five years). Do you suppose they let kids order this stuff?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 27 August 2004 04:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I have yet to abuse the ILL system though gawdamn is it tempting.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 27 August 2004 04:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh and maybe posters of Luda with a Hustler in one hand and Harry Potter in the other with a tagline reading
READIN' IS FUNDAMOTHERFUCKINMENTAL YA HEARD ME?
Even O'Reilly would have to approve of that.
xpost

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 27 August 2004 04:14 (twenty-one years ago)

re: ordering, dude it's a library, cool-ass people work there. we State College PSU fuckas hold it down so you know they're keeping it real up in NY.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 27 August 2004 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i used to (ab)use the ILL office at my alma mater to get laserdiscs of curse of the cat people and shit like that.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Friday, 27 August 2004 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

ok I think I'm breaking down next week

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 27 August 2004 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i once got a 16mm print of a short film through ILL! oh and a NAACP pamphlet from 1916!

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Friday, 27 August 2004 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

cuz there's some Richard Burton, John Huston and Pauline Kael-approved movies I really need to see.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 27 August 2004 04:17 (twenty-one years ago)

btw, forksclove, did you get my Fall CDs?

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 27 August 2004 04:17 (twenty-one years ago)

the thing abt ILL, it's all a power game y'see. the bigger and badder your library, the more likely they are to get something for you. when i worked at m*ss*rt i couldn't get practically anything through ill. but n*rthw*st*rn and w*sl*y*n were real providers.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Friday, 27 August 2004 04:18 (twenty-one years ago)

PENN STATE, DUDE. PENN STATE. Fuck this asterisk shit, I'm proud.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 27 August 2004 04:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Anthony: sure did; sorry I didn't let you know about them.
Honestly I've yet to crack them as I've been inundated with new music (see above) but they're exciting and likely to be shuffled into the ipod this week. Glad to see you liked the acapella cd. How was the other one? And would you like to write a review for the new one? Drop by the Hut and sign up!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 27 August 2004 04:20 (twenty-one years ago)

the fall a capella?

awesome

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Friday, 27 August 2004 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)

oh wait.

fuck.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Friday, 27 August 2004 04:23 (twenty-one years ago)

my similar overload of music (purchases as well as the incredible number I got through the Fall exchange thing) has kept me from giving them both the attention they deserve, but I'll get to them asap. And when I do I'll definitely drop by the hut.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 27 August 2004 04:24 (twenty-one years ago)

the book selection ain't bad either.
check out the Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center for a lot of long-lost out of print stuff, books and periodicals on pop music including a nice sampling of 70s-vintage Creem and 100 years of Billboard on creaky old microfilm viewers.

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Friday, 27 August 2004 09:45 (twenty-one years ago)

four months pass...
The Free Library of Philadelphia has the chopped & screwed version of Mississippi. (I have a feeling this was due to careless ordering.)

RS LaRue (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I did try to listen to it, but I didn't last very long.

RS LaRue (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to live near a grand library on 7th Ave. I don't recall if I was ever in a position to take CDs out from it, though.

.adam (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't know a single public library that still lends vinyl.

?? Doesn't Harold Washington in downtown Chicago? At the very least, if they don't, then the Sulzer Regional Library does.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway, I once wrote a little report on the Chicago Public Library's music collection: I discovered it was better than I thought it would be, but it didn't change my original hypothesis that library music collections are generally quite poor and that this is an area in severe need of attention.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

The Berkeley Library has a pitiful selection.

.adam (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Well if you library patrons wouldn't rip us off constantly. . .

RS LaRue (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

(You and the technical processing staff.)

RS LaRue (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

And the government. Cutting funding, that is.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

But definitely, I'm disappointed that our library doesn't have a bigger budget for circulating CDs, because it could be so much better. (The Music Department's reference collection is pretty good though.) Actually, some of the branches in Latino neighborhoods have a little extra money for CDs, which is great for me, since I get to submit recommendations to the CD list, and there's a core three-five branches that tend to pick up all the Afro-Latin music I list. (But maybe they would just pick any Afro-Latin music anyone listed.)

RS LaRue (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the budget is a problem. I can't really order any new books until, oh, July maybe. And last fiscal year we couldn't order anything for at least half a year, so we haven't fully caught up.

RS LaRue (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

jaymc when was the last time you saw vinyl at a CPL? i sort of doubt they still keep it around, since they are crazy for dumping stuff. they no longer have any of their film collection, they've thrown out lots of books simply because no one had checked them out for a long time, etc.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 6 January 2005 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

three months pass...
I just this hour found online that the NYPL has a comp I need to borrow to play on the radio Saturday.

I tend to look for only DVDs and books ... the Brooklyn central has been getting Iranian films of late.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...
NYPL may be great, but all the libraries in Eastern MA are connected via a database and I can request anything through the web to be delivered to my local branch. Recent items include:

Tom Waits - Orphans, Brawlers box
Graham Parker - Sparks / Live Sparks
Pere Ubu - Datapanik box
V/A - Rockin' Bones box
Benny Goodman - Complete Little Groups
V/A - some western swing box

I love my library system!

Mr. Odd, Saturday, 12 May 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

I checked out Clipse-Hell Hath No Fury from San Diego Public Library this week. It turned out to the be the censored version, but I wasn't that impressed with the lyrics anyway.

The problem I've found with library CD's is that most are so ridiculously scratched that they might play in a regular CD player but won't play or burn in my laptop. This even goes for things that you think irresponsible assholes wouldn't check out, like world music and classical. Fortunately, the Clipse album must've been pretty new. Wamp wamp.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Saturday, 12 May 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

all of the public library renovation plans sound pretty interesting. mid-manhattan is to close, and some of the stacks will be moved down to the white-house-lawn-esque book bunker under bryant.

to return to the original spirit of the thread, i'm so enjoying nypl at the moment, doing work in the main library reading room, and picking up reservations from mid-manhattan. which of the other branch libraries are good to visit now that donnell's closed?
