This week's texasmonthly.com tells a really tragic story I wasn't aware of at all and has some brilliant interview bits w/ Roky. So, I don't know, is he classic or dud?

Very much hit or miss, and the poor bastard has been through a lot. Still, his 13th Floor Elevators stuff was damn well great, and his best efforts in his early eighties solo days are worth chasing down (couple of live albums from the period just plain rule). Not too sure what to think of his recent stuff.

"Don't Slander Me" and "Starry Eyes," both from his Eighties solo days, are two of the greatest pop songs ever written. The Lucifer stuff, tho', well scary precisely because he was so fried and believed it, kinda like what Syd Barrett would have put out had Roger Waters and David Gilmour not been around to tidy up.
