I can't get "Unbreak My Heart" out of my head this morning.

And I haven't heard it in a long time, I think, unless I only noticed it subliminally. I don't like it either. (I guess.)

This song is great, you mentalist haters.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 12:51 (twenty years ago) link

I don't know if I really hate it at this point. I don't know most of the words either, so what's going through my head is just "Unbreak my heart. . . [melody melody. . .]"[Reapeat]

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 12:54 (twenty years ago) link

Say you love me again
Undo that hurt you caused
As you walked out the door
Something something out of my life.

There you go.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 12:56 (twenty years ago) link

It's in my head as well now. Luckily I quite like it.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 12:58 (twenty years ago) link

say you love me again
undo this hert you did

lukey (Lukey G), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 12:58 (twenty years ago) link

g--ff (gcannon), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 13:08 (twenty years ago) link

This is turning into the 'Make Dan Cry' thread.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 13:11 (twenty years ago) link

i've had GA's 'Love Machine' in my head all day today

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 13:13 (twenty years ago) link

Ugh. Awful, awful song.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 13:14 (twenty years ago) link

Toni Braxton is too mature for you corny indie fuxxors.

You just like her because you are a dirty old man.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 13:20 (twenty years ago) link

this song is great

jones (actual), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 13:21 (twenty years ago) link

I've always lurved this song -- it's kind of Scott Walker-y, when you think about it.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 13:22 (twenty years ago) link

You just like her because you are a dirty old man.

DAMN SKIPPY (plus her voice!)

Grandpa Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 13:23 (twenty years ago) link

I like pretty much everything about the song except the word 'unbreak' -- ugh, just looks ugly. But it is a sign that Diane Warren did have a brief shining moment otherwise.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 13:23 (twenty years ago) link

She wrote this? Ugh. I still like the song, though.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 13:24 (twenty years ago) link

She wrote this? Ugh.

Unfortunate but true. But even a blind monkey sometimes writes a hit that Toni Braxton sings well.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 13:27 (twenty years ago) link

i read somewhere that diane warren's music teacher told her she was tone deaf - don't know whether that explains the crazy key-changes in her choruses but it's kind of interesting

jones (actual), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 13:30 (twenty years ago) link

what was the uptempo single from the same album that r00led during the winter of '96? the you're making me HIIIGH one? that song kick this one...sexier video too. tight white outfits, rating hot guys in elevators, etc. i've never liked her ballads as much...

hit the freeway is divine

Vic (Vic), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 13:34 (twenty years ago) link

'you're making me high' is one of the best performances of anything ever.

hey is this the toni braxton thread finally?

jones (actual), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 13:42 (twenty years ago) link

Isn't there one?

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 13:44 (twenty years ago) link

Maybe not.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 13:47 (twenty years ago) link

"Unbreak My Heart" and "You're Makin Me High" are 2 of those songs that seem like they should have been released a bit earlier in the 90's than they were, looking back on them. Recently I thought maybe there had been a mistake when I was reading through a list of songs from 1996 and both of those were included.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 14:48 (twenty years ago) link

The house mix of this (by Frankie Knuckles I think, or maybe Hex Hector), is unbelievable - it's an epic mediterranean disco number that rivals "I Will Survive"!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 18:40 (twenty years ago) link

she rockin' mad fro in the video iirc

As a tribute to Barbara Streisand. No joke.

If I had this song stuck in my head, I believe either highly powerful sedatives or suicide would be my only options.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 19:49 (twenty years ago) link

Spencer is utterly OTM about the Frankie Knuckles version of this. The original is a bit of a plodder for me though.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 2 September 2004 07:38 (twenty years ago) link

Anyway, wean off it by making it a medley with "Unchain my heart".

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 2 September 2004 08:39 (twenty years ago) link

the house mix sounds like every other house mix of every other American vague-soul vocalist at the time if you ask me (grumpypuss)

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 2 September 2004 10:34 (twenty years ago) link

Stevem Blueski OTM (with the caveat that no matter the context, the vocals are goregous).

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Thursday, 2 September 2004 13:44 (twenty years ago) link

it's better than 'Breathe Again' tho eh?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 2 September 2004 13:48 (twenty years ago) link

"You're Making Me High" is so fantastic I even liked that retarded Method/Red song where they steal the hook. I'm surprised there hasn't been a Toni Braxton thread.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Thursday, 2 September 2004 14:09 (twenty years ago) link

"Breathe Again" is her weakest single. (I still like it, but it's weak.)

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Thursday, 2 September 2004 14:21 (twenty years ago) link

I used to love "Breathe Again". "Unbreak My Heart" is great but I remember it being around interminably, refusing to go away, and it pales nxt to "You're Making Me High" and "Hit The Freeway" anyway. Did "Hit The Freeway" have an album attached to it? Or did they just decide to kill her career off humanely when it flopped?

the house mix sounds like every other house mix of every other American vague-soul vocalist at the time if you ask me (grumpypuss)

Correct, the sound is unremarkable, but the trad-disco/house arrangement works amazingly well with the 'song'. I get the same Dr Frankenstein "it's alive!" feeling from this remix that I get when hear "A Stroke of Genius".

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 2 September 2004 16:38 (twenty years ago) link

For some reason I can't stand Toni Braxton's voice or her style of singing. Am I odd?

Candlestick, Thursday, 2 September 2004 18:29 (twenty years ago) link

Yes.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Thursday, 2 September 2004 18:33 (twenty years ago) link

her vocal on this one is pretty overripe

amateur!!st, Thursday, 2 September 2004 19:09 (twenty years ago) link

Weirdo.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Thursday, 2 September 2004 19:18 (twenty years ago) link

I only like one song by Toni Braxton. But I like it quite a bit. It's "I Get So High." Classic! If only for the chord change on "You make my temperature ri-i-ISE."
