"I sit alone in my four-cornered room staring at candles
Oh that shit is on? Heh
Let me drop some shit like this here Real smooth..."

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 18:43 (twenty years ago) link

Total dud, obviously.

djdee2005, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 18:44 (twenty years ago) link

Also, who's heard "My Malt's Playing Tricks on Me," the St. Ides advert. that the Geto Boys did? Its brill.

(PS: My first post was sarcastic obv)

djdee2005, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 18:45 (twenty years ago) link

"I was scareder than a motherfucker!" Absolute classic.

Vic Funk, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 18:48 (twenty years ago) link

ok this is obv.classic but which is the best verse?!

bushwick's is weakest for me. love the way willie d pronounces 'paranoid' in the second verse, but i'd say the third one is my favourite. it's sad.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 18:49 (twenty years ago) link

"I sit alone in my four-cornered room eating a wing dinner..."

djdee2005, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 18:49 (twenty years ago) link

"dddrrrrroppin' them motherfuckin' b's on 'im".

(classic)

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 18:54 (twenty years ago) link

The best line for me DOES come from Bushwick, where he is descibing the shadowy figure who has been haunting him -- "He was going down I planned / but this wasn't no ordinary man / he stood about 6 or 7 feet / now that's the creep I been seein' in my sleep"...
For some reason, amongst all the menace and insanity of the song, I find it so endearing that someone who is 6 feet tall doesn't qualify as an "ordinary man" to Bushwick Bill - in fact, that person could even be seen as a monster.
Anyway, such a classic it's ridiculous.

Super Extreme Classic.

The riff. What is it from?

Scott CE (Scott CE), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 19:46 (twenty years ago) link

Is that the radio-edit, Ben? My copy is "no ordinary nigga" "that's the nigga I been seeing in my sleep"

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 19:50 (twenty years ago) link

aye, i was about to make a query along similar lines.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 19:52 (twenty years ago) link

The riff. What is it from?

the-breaks.com lists "Hung up on My Baby" by Isaac Hayes as the sample, but I can't confirm that
it also says "The Jam" (Drums) Graham Central Station

artdamages (artdamages), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 19:57 (twenty years ago) link

Maybe the best single of the '90s (rap or otherwise), now that you mention it. The line that always confused me is the one where I could never tell whether they were saying "I live by the sword" or "I live by the swamp." EITHER of which would be great.

chuck, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:01 (twenty years ago) link

It's definitely SWORD (pronounced SWORD). I just listened to it.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:06 (twenty years ago) link

i just want to point out that i am voting for this single #1 on the ilm 90s poll

artiste (artiste), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:07 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah! The radio edit is very different from the album version -- sometimes entire chunks are changed.
Uggh -- I tried to Google the lyrics to provide examples, but kept coming across an abysmal cover of the song by something called "The Kottonmouth Kings" where they change all the words to be about pot paranoia. So dismal. But yeah, the radio edit is totally different. I used to love it when rappers did that, like Ice Cube's "Kill at Will" EP came in two different versions, and the clean one had entirely different verses that were occasionally even more creative.

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:12 (twenty years ago) link

Another endearing Bushwick moment for me is when this incredible uber-thug -- I mean, jesus, listen to Mind of a Lunatic -- literally brags about robbing candy from trick or treating little kids! I worship this song.

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:14 (twenty years ago) link

On BET occasionally they let some rapper go on and play his favorite videos (the only time it's worthwhile to watch BET) and someone, I want to say 50 Cent played this video and I was amazed. !!!

David Allen (David Allen), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:15 (twenty years ago) link

I have to confess to being actually scared by the video when it first came out. I guess I was 15 or 16 when I saw it, and I remember that it really got to me. Not scary in the monster movie kind of way (and bushwick bill's part of the song isn't really scary), but just it seemed so sad and unrelenting and ominous that it would really sort of get me down in a "Wow, life is brutal, huh?" sort of way. Still loved it, of course. I think the fear had more to do with the song than the video, as I don't remember much about the video apart from the machete.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:17 (twenty years ago) link

The part about him punching the concrete until his hands are bloody is fucking intense.

This song is on some serious existential shit.

My #1 single of the 90s too probably.

Does anybody remember "My Man is Playing Tricks on Me" by the Ghetto Girls? It was filthy!!

chuck, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:33 (twenty years ago) link

I'm uploading the "My Malt's Playing Tricks On Me" radio spot right now. Anyone interested?

djdee2005, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:37 (twenty years ago) link

the sample is definitely Isaac Hayes. It's from the Truck Turner soundtrack.

You can even hear a slice of the original on the Amazon soundclip - fifth track down:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000000ZN1/qid=1094074640/sr=1-13/ref=sr_1_13/104-1774787-9524735?v=glance&s=music

Anyway, yeah this definitely in my top 5 singles. Maybe #1, I'm not sure yet; haven't even finished my nominations yet.

big classic. the whole paranoid theme of the lyrics is amazing, even dare I say moving.

"I often drift when I drive
Havin fatal thoughts of suicide"

for a hit song, it's bleak as hell.

yeah on the BET top 25 countdown (which is a wonderful show, 3 hours of a rapper's favorite videos every Saturday afternoon, often a lot of old/obscure stuff you don't get to normally see), the G Unit picked this video, it last aired probably a couple weeks ago and I saw it.

bushwick's is weakest for me.

TOTALLY wrong. if anything, it's the song's sucker punch. b/c each of the other GB's raps -- as fantastic and far-fetched as they are -- could PLAUSIBLY be ACTUALLY HAPPENING to them. as could bushwick's -- until he says "then he disappeared and my boys disappeared, too" and THEN (4+ min. into the song) the listener realizes the song is in the realm of the fantastic, the "mind of a lunatic" (to steal the title from one of their earlier songs). that's why what comes AFTER bushwick's rap -- the "goddamn homie!" after bushwick's turn, to end the song -- is so esp. effective, classic, and even sublime.

I love how on the Isaac Hayes Tough Guys soundtrack the cover states in 3 places in LARGE letters that the title of the film is "3 Tough Guys", then all through the theme song Hayes sings TWO tough guys. He's in the film - there's no excuse.

It's a great album by the way.

as if this could be anything other than ABSOLUTELY FUCKING CLASSIC! fwiw, I just attempted to recite this track verbatim on another ilxor's gchat while said party was otherwise occupied. I made it through the first verse before carpal tunnel set in.. I could have done it, though! This is one of three rap tracks I've memorized from start to finish, the others being "Black Steel ITHOC" & "Paul Revere." I guess I like to memeorize rap tracks that tell stories..
