So far this really sucks. Why is Willie Colon clapping for this crap?

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Xuxa is on the show tonight!

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 23:09 (twenty-one years ago)

The first thing i saw when i turned on the tv was jessica simpson singing! I knew i was in the right place then.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Bleah!

I like the host.

Is this Brazilian Maria Rita any good? I like her voice from the snippet they played.

I can't believe there is zero salsa presence. Did I see that correctly? I was really hoping Victor Manuelle would perform.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I could remember the name of the Brazilian singer I heard on the radio today. Her mother was a famous singer who died when she was four. She has a new album out. maybe that was her.

Paulina Rubio wasn't that great. Nice touch with the dogs on stage though. (she did look great though.)

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree that she looked quite lovely.

It's brave to bring dogs onto the stage. They do occasionally get out of line.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Why does Latinos always want to rock?

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

That wasn't too bad Cafe Racuba and Incubus.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked it!

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

That Maria Rita is sweeping!

I liked the cafe tacuba guy's hat too!

And Xuxa and Cheech! I have an episode of Xuxa's short-lived u.s. kidz show on video with cheech on it.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I liked it. I didn't expect to like it, but I thought they sounded pretty good.

And there's Maria Rita again. She looks like she's going to break down and cry every time she gets called up.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously, WTF did that have to do with Celia Cruz or salsa? Why are they waging war on salsa?

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Im a little confused by that myself. I was thinking that maybe those rappers sampled her or something. But i didn't hate the performance. I like breakdancers.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I realize this is predictable, but honestly, what kind of Celia tribute was that?

I want to see that animated political video. (Was the group Molotov?)

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I was wondering what the hell Tyrese was doing there, but i guess he sings a song with that women who started things off.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Akwid was something separate. But that female singer who came out initially and performed? Very strange.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, Molotov. Their videos are always really good. same with cafe tacuba.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Los Lonely Boys with Santana was pretty good.

(Whoah, that model in the. . . commercial right after.)

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 2 September 2004 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

That was great. The Los Lonely Boys+Santana thing. It's nice to see Carlos rock out without having to sell a single or something.

I like how they have Latino commercials on during the latin Grammys.

So far, this is already better than 95% of all recent awards show i have seen.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 2 September 2004 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Despite complaining about the mix of music represented, I still think it's pretty good.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 2 September 2004 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm with you on that Celia Cruz tribute. it was very poorly done. i was all set for a slam bang salsafest, you know?

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 2 September 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn, Robi Draco was rockin' too. it's nice to know that I can turn to the latin grammys to hear some actual geetar music.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 2 September 2004 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, always in the background is the way it's practically impossible for Cuban artists to get visas now. (And I'm not a big fan of Cuban music, especially the contemporary stuff, but it would be nice if people had a chance to see it.)

x-post, I wasn't into the Robi Draco as much.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 2 September 2004 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Ozomatli were good. I have the impression they'd be much better live than recorded though.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 2 September 2004 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I think they are known more as a live act. I liked it too. i liked the horns. I've never been a big fan, but sometimes a band can really impress you at the right time. great energy.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 2 September 2004 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked the guy with the puppets. Marc Antonio Solis was it?

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 2 September 2004 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the new disposable toilet brush. Who says the world is not improving?

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 2 September 2004 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I caught part of Bush's daughters at the Republican convention on Democracy Now. They mentioned Outkast. Weird.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 2 September 2004 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Somehow I knew you would like him! :)

I've never heard him before.

I'll tell you what I don't like is that ranchero music that they just gave an award for. I'm not real big on some of that trad mexican stuff. maybe my mexican co-workers in the philly corner stores that i worked in made me sick of it. (i did like their taste in metal and punk though!)

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 2 September 2004 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

here's some cuban stuff for you.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 2 September 2004 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, Bob Ludwig got on stage!

Well, that was short and sweet. Most of those shows go on forever. I wouldn't have minded watching a couple more acts.

Adios, Rockist. Vaya Con Dios.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 2 September 2004 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the Bebo (?) Valdes segment with the flamenco singer, but I wish it had gone on longer.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 2 September 2004 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I guess that's it then.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 2 September 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw bebo valdés with el cigala (the flamenco singer) back in december. watching bebo play piano is always a great pleasure, but el cigala's singing is quite average, and i don't quite like the mixture of flamenco and latin jazz. at least not their mixture.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 2 September 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I just got an album of Cream-esque heavy blues-rock called In For Sin, by Amplified Heat, three Colombian brothers from Texas. Wonder if they'll get nominated next year?

pdf (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 2 September 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

man I have a lot more of these records than I did last year

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 2 September 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Begs2Differ, I think you would have liked most of the show. It moved along at a pretty good clip, not bogging down in building suspense before awards got announced (which is kind of how I remember the Grammys, years ago anyway).

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 2 September 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Just saw in the Washington Post this morning that the producer of Brazilian winner Maria Rita got killed in a car accident sometime after the awards. He was on a motorcycle and ran a red light into a car.

I've just spaced on his name and don't have the paper handy. Tom something...Capone maybe...

steve-k, Friday, 3 September 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

That's sad news. Is he the guy who she brought up the second time? I'm not sure who that was.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Friday, 3 September 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

oh shit, if it's tom capone then he produced skank's record 'cosmotron' and he was a god. still sad no matter who it was.

i saw virtually the whole thing, r.s., and i share your feeling that there wasn't any real salsa / enough bogus salsa / salsa. even a bit of reggaeton would have done if they had oh say don omar or someone like that who really do incorporate salsa music. i take back everything i ever said about latin grammys; although the non-involvement of emilio estefan probly's what did it. anyway, yeah.

Music Producer Dies in Crash After Grammys

Reuters
Friday, September 3, 2004; Page C03

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 2 -- A Brazilian music producer who was a leading nominee at the Latin Grammy Awards was killed in a motorcycle crash in Los Angeles early Thursday, hours after leaving the show, police and his record label said.

Tom Capone, who was nominated for five Latin Grammys and produced award-winning albums by Brazilian singer Maria Rita and the rock band Skank, died from massive head trauma after his rented Harley-Davidson collided with a car.

Capone was driving down Ventura Boulevard when his motorcycle and a Dodge Neon driven by a 23-year-old woman smashed into each other at an intersection, Los Angeles Police Lt. Steven Allen told Reuters.

The 37-year-old producer was wearing a "novelty helmet" that would not have provided much head protection, Allen said.

Capone, whose real name was Luis Antonio Ferreira Goncalves, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Allen said Capone may have run a red light and that the woman, who was not injured in the crash, passed a sobriety test and would not be charged.

"Somebody ran a red light," he said. "The only person still alive says she didn't run a red light."

A spokesman for Warner Bros. Music Brasil confirmed that Capone was killed in a motorcycle accident.

While little known in the United States, Capone had gained fame in the Latin American world, and Billboard magazine reported that with his five Grammy nominations he became the most nominated Brazilian ever.

Capone was nominated for album of the year and best engineered album for "Maria Rita" and for producer of the year. He was also nominated twice for record of the year, for Maria Rita's "A Festa" and Skank's "Dois Rios."

steve-k, Friday, 3 September 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Weirdly, I had been thinking earlier about the possibility that Maria Rita would die some time soon after the Latin Grammys, cutting short a promising career. (But I do often think what might be called morbid thoughts.)

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

this is really fucking sad. it won't change anything, but if anyone gets the chance to hear 'cosmotron,' you will probably be even sadder, because that is one beautifully produced record.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

What is (the band) Skank like?
