Gay music

A collection of lists I wrote, for amusement.

Musicians who never hid their homosexuality:
1. Rufus Wainwright
2. Beth Ditto of the Gossip (she is gay, right?)
I don't know who else.

Stars who claimed to be bisexual when they were really just gay:
1. Elton John
2. Michael Stipe

Stars who claimed to be bi when they were really just straight:
1. David Bowie
2. Madonna

Stars who finally came out:
1. George Michael
2. Rob Halford
4. Bob Mould
5. Melissa Etheridge

(I already counted Elton and Stipe.)

These are very short lists cuz I can't think of much to say, although I wanted to start a thread on this (without bothering to look for anything else on it here).

Stars who are probably in the closet:
1. Michael Jackson

If anyone has anything to add, please do. :P

Nowell, Thursday, 2 September 2004 01:28 (twenty years ago)

You can't have a thread like this without mentioning

The Queers,
The Homosexuals,
Pansy Division,
Gaye Bykers on Acid.

One of the bandnames I came up with for one of my bands (which was promptly rejected by the other members) was 'Trevor Gaye and the Raving Homosexuals'.

Sasha (sgh), Thursday, 2 September 2004 01:34 (twenty years ago)

I'm trying to think of bands that were homophobic..
Guns 'n Roses, right? Yeah. Axl said something about how he hates gay guys, but likes seeing women together.

Nowell, Thursday, 2 September 2004 01:37 (twenty years ago)

Didn't you start a thread like this once or twice before? You are preoccupied with this subject, young lady.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Thursday, 2 September 2004 01:39 (twenty years ago)

On gay people in music and shit? Did I?
I wanted to start ANOTHER thread just now, but...it can wait.
In about a half hour I'll be gone for a long time again though.
School sucks!

Nowell, Thursday, 2 September 2004 01:41 (twenty years ago)

music made by the gays? C/D?

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 2 September 2004 01:43 (twenty years ago)

I didn't mean just music made by gays.

Nowell, Thursday, 2 September 2004 01:47 (twenty years ago)

gay music = music made teh gays

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 2 September 2004 01:47 (twenty years ago)

In this thread you asked which musicians did we think were in the closet
Music related banter

In this thread you *had* asked whether Freddie Mercury was gay or bi but the moderator changed it:
My ass hurts

AaronHz (AaronHz), Thursday, 2 September 2004 01:52 (twenty years ago)

Okay, okay, I got it...
Whatever.

....I gotta stop using that word.

Nowell, Thursday, 2 September 2004 01:53 (twenty years ago)

I don't think it's clear that the Homosexuals were in fact Homosexuals. One of them may be, but he's the one who denied it in an interview, and the other two had serious girlfriends, I believe.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 2 September 2004 04:08 (twenty years ago)

i think Gay Music actually is an AMG section, IIRC

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 2 September 2004 05:39 (twenty years ago)

Groups who appeared to be gay when only one member of the group really was:
Village People.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 2 September 2004 07:34 (twenty years ago)

The Hidden Cameras, anybody??

Morrissey?

Jimmy Sommerville (+Bronski Beat, Communards...), Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Marc Almond.

There's a rumour that Boy George might have been a homosexualist.

A lot of these were 80s stars, weren't they? Is it harder to be gay and be a pop star now, do you think? Will Young being an exception, because they didn't have much choice about promoting his record after he'd come out.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Thursday, 2 September 2004 07:54 (twenty years ago)

Would anyone care to comment on Kurt Cobain and/or Kirk Hammet?

mei (mei), Thursday, 2 September 2004 08:00 (twenty years ago)

Who's Kirk Hammet?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 2 September 2004 08:03 (twenty years ago)

Lead guitarist for Metallica.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 2 September 2004 08:04 (twenty years ago)

He's gay? That's kinda surprising, considering it's Metallica.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 2 September 2004 08:06 (twenty years ago)

he's not gay as far as i know, though from interviews it's clear that he's not homophobic.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 2 September 2004 08:09 (twenty years ago)

I think I heard Kirk is bi.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Thursday, 2 September 2004 09:04 (twenty years ago)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 2 September 2004 10:18 (twenty years ago)

Is it harder to be gay and be a pop star now, do you think?

After Will Young/Alex Parks, it's scarcely an issue these days (in the UK at least). 80s out-gay (or even semi-out: Marc & George) pop stars tended to reference their sexuality more directly, so tend to be the first people that spring to mind. Much less in-yer-face gayness in the UK charts these days, I would agree (as opposed to all that homo-friendly, Saturday-night-PA-at-G.A.Y., I-love-ze-gays stuff, of which there is a veritable barrel-load).

BTW, I didn't know about Mark Eitzel until today's Guardian interview. Or maybe I did, then forgot. Basically, the time for compiling these sorts of lists has rather passed, hasn't it?

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 2 September 2004 10:31 (twenty years ago)

Rule of thumb: if you're an attractive man, you're probably gay; if you're an unattractive woman, you're probably lesbian.

maria b (maria b), Thursday, 2 September 2004 15:34 (twenty years ago)

Point proven.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 2 September 2004 19:45 (twenty years ago)

Musicians who never hid their homosexuality:
Jimmy Sommerville
Klaus Nomi
Wayne/Jayne County
Richard Sohl (Patti Smith group)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 2 September 2004 19:52 (twenty years ago)

Stephin Merritt

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 2 September 2004 20:01 (twenty years ago)

Didn't Tom Robinson jump back in the closet a few years ago?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 2 September 2004 20:15 (twenty years ago)

dunno.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 2 September 2004 20:17 (twenty years ago)

I had a theory once about the relative "gayness" of Bob Mould, Stephin Merritt, and Rufus Wainwright, but I forget what it was now.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 2 September 2004 20:28 (twenty years ago)

I've not got much to add, but I'd like to say that I was so interested in the topic of homo- and bisexuality in music cuz most of the people I know are homophobic, and I don't like it. But I can't change the way they think.

And cuz I like music.

Nowell, Thursday, 2 September 2004 20:31 (twenty years ago)

It's high school; it'll be over soon.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 2 September 2004 20:33 (twenty years ago)

Not necessarily kids at school - just, like, everybody.

Nowell, Thursday, 2 September 2004 20:35 (twenty years ago)

no mention of the Pet Shop Boys??? Category 1, I believe.

frankE (frankE), Thursday, 2 September 2004 20:36 (twenty years ago)

Perry Farrell and Dave Navarro's constant kissing - that was a long time ago. It wasn't really "gay". I think they did it for shock value.

Nowell, Thursday, 2 September 2004 20:39 (twenty years ago)

Dom, who is that picture of?

reo, Thursday, 2 September 2004 21:24 (twenty years ago)

the man with the glasses, not the kid.

reo, Thursday, 2 September 2004 21:25 (twenty years ago)

British comedy actor, Carry On Star, and noted homosexualist Charles Hawtrey. Cover star for The Smiths' singles collection.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 2 September 2004 21:29 (twenty years ago)

Worst pretend Smiiths cover ever (I love Hawtrey, and so does Morrissey, but that's not the point).

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 2 September 2004 21:51 (twenty years ago)

I was amused to learn recently, looking at some old cuttings, that Boy George was not out from the beginning. Tabloid interviews were all 'he says he hasn't found the right girl yet' at the start.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 2 September 2004 21:52 (twenty years ago)

Re. Pet Shop Boys, Neil officially came out in 96 before the 'Bilingual' album, although it was pretty clear in his lyrics since the beginning. Chris is still in the closet.

Don't forget kd lang, Placebo (2 of them?), members of Le Tigre, and Samantha Fox is dating a woman now.

Oh and Michael Jackson is a pedophile, not a homosexual.

Seb (Seb), Friday, 3 September 2004 00:45 (twenty years ago)

Didn't Tom Robinson jump back in the closet a few years ago?

He's straight these days, yeah, married with children and all that. Haven't heard anything about this being a closet situation, tho.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Friday, 3 September 2004 00:57 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone else love the fact that the only one of Husker Du who isn't gay is Greg Norton, with his extremely camp 'tache.

Sasha (sgh), Friday, 3 September 2004 01:38 (twenty years ago)

wasn't one of the guys in the buzzcocks down for hot manonman action?

See also Larry Heard, and a rediculous amount of house producers.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Friday, 3 September 2004 03:14 (twenty years ago)

Well the summer of gay did start with the Homosexuals. While Bruno was married to Suzy Vida, and he referred to gays as "poofs", I think all can agree that the Homosexuals were pro gay.

If you really want to talk about "Gay" records, Peter Catham "A Man's Mouth" LP from 86' is the sucking synth gay name game. It's got Wolf Eyes wriiten all over it.

Tom Smith just re-issued the XEX record, very gay synth action from South River NJ ca. 1980...

more for your "list"... Cage, Ornette, Cecil...Sun Ra?

The gay summer ends with a Re-issue of Arthur Russell's "World of Echo" LP, in the stores any day. It is the statement that all the other material out there has been leading up to. It's his most personal work. Steve Knutson played me the DVD (Arthur playing at Niblock's) and it will touch your soul and should make you shiver whether you make lists of gay musicians for amusement or not.

all the best, Charlie Sexton

john allen (john allen), Friday, 3 September 2004 04:10 (twenty years ago)

I remember this issue of Rolling Stone I had in like '82 where Boy George came out as bi. It was actually quite a shocking thing at the time. But then I was only 11 years old...

As for The Homosexuals, I always kindof assumed they probably *weren't* mostly gay because that would be too obvious or something.

Bimble (bimble), Friday, 3 September 2004 04:19 (twenty years ago)

Arthur Russell DVD????!

Bimble (bimble), Friday, 3 September 2004 04:21 (twenty years ago)

Limited edition package from Audika.

john allen (john allen), Friday, 3 September 2004 04:31 (twenty years ago)

more for your "list"... Cage, Ornette, Cecil...Sun Ra?

Ornette Coleman is gay? I never knew that. I think Sun Ra might've been more or less asexual cuz of some congenital testicular abnormality? At least that's what I heard.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 3 September 2004 05:56 (twenty years ago)

Anybody name any straight musicians selfconsciously gunning for the gay demographic?

e.g. Kylie...

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 3 September 2004 06:20 (twenty years ago)

Also: Justus Kohncke

Two summer anthems so far and counting...

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 3 September 2004 06:21 (twenty years ago)

"Gay Boyfriend" (video - work safe).

This is either totally the shite or totally shite.

TWEEPTO BISMOL, Friday, 3 September 2004 06:31 (twenty years ago)

Noel Coward (no relation). Cole Porter.

Rockers: Freddie Mercury, Erasure.

Anonymous Coward, Friday, 3 September 2004 07:17 (twenty years ago)

Imperial Teen (criminally ignored), Klaus Nomi, The Mumps, The Fast, Voice Farm...

Oh, Friday, 3 September 2004 07:25 (twenty years ago)

Tom Robinson wrote in to the Gay Times after they had denounced him as a 'traitor', saying he'd always chosen to identify as gay because that was the way he felt at the time, but that people's feelings could change. It wasn't a case of him saying he was straight, but that there was a fluidity to his sexuality and that he'd found himself in this new relationship.

He was pretty indignant about it. I don't blame him, actually. That said, there is some irony in the bloke who wrote 'Glad To Be Gay' (bloody depressing, and in my opinion not very good, song) now being married with children.

x-post I don't think the Silent Pet Shop Boy is in the closet, so much as he hasn't decided to make an issue of his sexuality. The two aren't necessarily the same.
What was that video a few years back with all the water-slides and pretty people? Chris Lowe didn't seem to be in the closet on that one.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Friday, 3 September 2004 07:34 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Chris Lowe just doesn't make an issue of it. If you listen to the commentary track on PopArt there's no doubt though - if anything, it's him who was interested in getting pretty young boys in for videos like 'Paninaro' and not Neil or the director.

Rollins was dogged by controversy around the time of 'End Of The Silence' and Joe Cole's death, mainly because he threatened to beat up anybody who claimed he was gay. It seemed (at the time) like a clear case of 'the boy protesteth too much'. He got all stalkery over Joan Chen to try and prove how hetero he was, iirc.

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 3 September 2004 11:48 (twenty years ago)

OK, so ... having understood a bit better as to why Nowell could use a list ... and keeping it to broadly "pop" performers ... and leaving out closet cases ... and including some "proper" bi, rather than those who have merely dabbled along the way (Bowie, Reed, Jagger etc) ... and without delving too deeply into Queercore ... we proudly present:

Marc Almond, Andy Bell (Erasure), Roddy Bottum (Faith No More/Imperial Teen), Richard Coles (Communards), Wayne/Jayne County, Tony De Vit, Stephen Gately (Boyzone), Boy George, Divine, Mark Eitzel, Joel Gibb (Hidden Cameras), Rob Halford (Judas Priest), Grant Hart (Husker Du), Larry Heard (Mr Fingers), Jobriath, Elton John, Holly Johnson, Andrew Kinlochan (Phixx), Frankie Knuckles, Jeppe "Senior " Laursen (Junior Senior), Johnny Mathis, Little Richard, Chris Lowe, Freddie Mercury, Stephen Merritt, George Michael, Bob Mould, Klaus Nomi, Pansy Division (all members), Tom Robinson (now married), Felipe Rose (Village People), Rupaul, Arthur Russell, Paul Rutherford (Frankie Goes To Hollywood), Fred Schneider (B-52's), Richard Sohl (Patti Smith Group), Jimi Sommerville, Michael Stipe, Keith Strickland (B-52's), Sylvester, Neil Tennant, Rufus Wainwright, Will Young.

Joan Armatrading, Madeleine Bell (Blue Mink), Carrie Brownstein (Sleater-Kinney), Tracey Chapman, Ani DiFranco, Beth Ditto (The Gossip), Melissa Etheridge, Samantha Fox, Janis Ian, Indigo Girls (both members), kd lang, Me'Shell N'DegeOcello, Sinead O'Connor, Alex Parks, Linda Perry (4 Non Blondes), Phranc, JD Samson (Le Tigre), Kate Schellenbach (Luscious Jackson), Michelle Shocked, Jill Sobule, Dusty Springfield, Josephine Wiggs (The Breeders), Thalia Zedek (Come).

That enough ammo for ya, Nowell?

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 3 September 2004 12:44 (twenty years ago)

It doesn't just have to be "pop" performers. Isn't all music - other than classical, maybe - "pop" music?

Nowell, Friday, 3 September 2004 21:51 (twenty years ago)

Gay composers

Michael Tippett

Thank you. That was informative.
No, really.

Nowell, Friday, 3 September 2004 22:25 (twenty years ago)

I don't think anybody's mentioned Patrick out of Kitchens of Distinction yet. So now I have.
