any thoughts? i, for one, am pleased as punch to see them getting such props.

Drew Lichtenberg, Thursday, 2 September 2004 21:23 (twenty years ago)

where are jenny's pants?

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 2 September 2004 21:25 (twenty years ago)

I like her stuff alright but I don't like the guy (esp. when he had that hideous little moustache). Haven't heard the new album.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 2 September 2004 21:28 (twenty years ago)

is it true that one of the bullies from Boy Meets World is in that band!?

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 2 September 2004 21:33 (twenty years ago)

She was in FOXFIRE! ROWR!

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 2 September 2004 21:35 (twenty years ago)

Blake Sennett's TV acting resume is on imdb under the name Blake Soper.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 2 September 2004 21:37 (twenty years ago)

one of the other 3 bullies was the "it's not a schooner, it's a sailboat" guy in Mallrats and played Ashton's goth friend in The Butterfly Effect, but the other bully doesn't seem to have done much since BMW.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 2 September 2004 21:40 (twenty years ago)

yep, i was just gonna say he played Pinsky on Salute Your Shorts.

reo, Thursday, 2 September 2004 21:42 (twenty years ago)

And Jenny was in the fantastic feature-length Nintendo commercial 'The Wizard' with Fred Savage. I think she also did a film with Ben Savage, but I haven't seen it. Anyway, I have a secret love for Rilo Kiley, even if they can be insufferably sweet (the most wee US band?), they can be a lot of fun and very pleasant too. Blake's character in Boy Meets World was 'Joey the Rat', which is a great nickname too.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Thursday, 2 September 2004 21:50 (twenty years ago)

there's pictures of Jenny Lewis with Jake Gyllenhaal at the Donnie Darko premiere. Did he date her TOO? wtf. asshole needs to die.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 2 September 2004 21:52 (twenty years ago)

"The most wee US band" - childish insult or typo? Should of course be 'twee'.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Thursday, 2 September 2004 21:55 (twenty years ago)

they're too country to be the most twee

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 2 September 2004 21:56 (twenty years ago)

"Portions for Foxes" is easily one of the best songs I've heard this year.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 2 September 2004 22:03 (twenty years ago)

But you'd have to think that not calling it "Bad News" eats into airplay and record sales.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 2 September 2004 22:06 (twenty years ago)

But you'd have to think that not calling it "Bad News" eats into airplay and record sales.

Yeah, I commented on this earlier over in the Great Songs with Throwaway Titles thread.

Talent Explosion (Talent Explosion), Thursday, 2 September 2004 22:19 (twenty years ago)

this album sounds like lilith fair-era outtakes from some alt-chancers

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 2 September 2004 23:40 (twenty years ago)

isn't that what it is?

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 2 September 2004 23:46 (twenty years ago)

though isn't jenny lewis more dick-friendly than the lilith squad?

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 2 September 2004 23:47 (twenty years ago)

i was just shocked given the love they get from the indie stepford wives crowd is all

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 2 September 2004 23:51 (twenty years ago)

She cusses = fuck the Liliths. They were on Barsuk & Saddle Creek = smell the indie glove. I am quite fond of this album, and of the group in general. Shoo wop.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 2 September 2004 23:52 (twenty years ago)

i don't think I'll ever forgive sennett for that moustache he had for awhile

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 2 September 2004 23:54 (twenty years ago)

anyway she can be friendly with certain dicks any time if you know what i'm sayin

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 2 September 2004 23:56 (twenty years ago)

"Portions for Foxes" is bright, unabashed POP.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 2 September 2004 23:57 (twenty years ago)

http://www.stp.uh.edu/vol68/60/arts/rilo.jpg

what ever erotic appeal Jenny Lewis gives the band was cancelled by bruno puntz jones on the right.

i lot of girls I know think she's the best dressed indie person ever. I think that's possible.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 2 September 2004 23:57 (twenty years ago)

I have to admit, I'm a little scared to hear the rest of the album.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 2 September 2004 23:58 (twenty years ago)

they gave one of the worst, most corniest indiest fuckiest interviews i've ever read

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 2 September 2004 23:58 (twenty years ago)

"i like seeing people walk down the street dressed like me because i know they're going to be into the same stuff i'm into"

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 2 September 2004 23:59 (twenty years ago)

get the hook!

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 2 September 2004 23:59 (twenty years ago)

yikes!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 3 September 2004 00:03 (twenty years ago)

wow I lost that notion around the same time they were hangin' with ben savage

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 3 September 2004 00:03 (twenty years ago)

I honestly think Jenny is definitely one of the best lyricists in indie rock right now by a long shot. She's smart, funny, tragic, in all the right ways. It was nice to see Christgau make a point of commending the "It's a Hit" lyrics, especially after the P-fork douchebag so flagrantly missed the point of them in his/her review (I wondered if the reviewer took exception to the anti-Bush slant).

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Friday, 3 September 2004 00:05 (twenty years ago)

She looks like David Johansen in that picture.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 3 September 2004 00:08 (twenty years ago)

But in a good way.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 3 September 2004 00:09 (twenty years ago)

is it my imagination, or does the album fall apart after 3 or 4 songs?

chuck, Friday, 3 September 2004 00:24 (twenty years ago)

I have a serious dislike for them based on the name. For some irrational reason it really irritates me and I can't get past it.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Friday, 3 September 2004 00:33 (twenty years ago)

I haven't heard anything by them but both of Christgau's pieces don't inspire me much. Then again I seem to be the only person who wonders what exactly the fuss about the New Pornographers is too, and lately I've been divesting my collection of a huge amount of the power-pop-and-related stuff which I realized I don't need any more.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 3 September 2004 01:02 (twenty years ago)

there's WAY more personality to Rilo than the New Ps.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 3 September 2004 01:06 (twenty years ago)

Personality or just, you know, quirk? (I'm not trying to bait here, but I'm often suspicious of that as a term -- especially if it's not applied to the music!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 3 September 2004 01:07 (twenty years ago)

more memorable lyrics, distinct persona. though I know you and lyrics aren't tight.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 3 September 2004 01:10 (twenty years ago)

I'm not a big Rilo fan but I can totally see them crossing over to the mainstream on charm and hooks more so than the New P's (who are totally an indie-pop deal).

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 3 September 2004 01:12 (twenty years ago)

though I know you and lyrics aren't tight.

Rather. FUCK ATTEMPTS AT POETRY YOU BASTARDS JUST DO MY HEAD IN FOR CHRIST'S SAKE. Sorry, venting a bit.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 3 September 2004 01:13 (twenty years ago)

haha I like it when Ned types in caps.

artdamages (artdamages), Friday, 3 September 2004 01:19 (twenty years ago)

ned needs a new schtick

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 3 September 2004 01:21 (twenty years ago)

Dude, and you don't?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 3 September 2004 01:22 (twenty years ago)

dont we all xpost

artdamages (artdamages), Friday, 3 September 2004 01:22 (twenty years ago)

I actually don't think anyone needs to change whatever schtick they might have. The whole point is that's a wound-up ball of bias positive or negative that reacts to what it encounters. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 3 September 2004 01:23 (twenty years ago)

I totally read that wink emoticon as a middle finger

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 3 September 2004 01:24 (twenty years ago)

Sometimes a wink emoticon is just a wink emoticon.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 3 September 2004 01:25 (twenty years ago)

haha

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 3 September 2004 01:25 (twenty years ago)

jess and ned kinda cancel each other out

artdamages (artdamages), Friday, 3 September 2004 01:30 (twenty years ago)

I find Rilo K and Belle & S similar in that their lyrics can be great, tunes/arrangements often catchy or at least clever but both of their vocal styles give me a vague, annoying itch that I can't scratch.

Thea (Thea), Thursday, 9 September 2004 00:34 (twenty years ago)

five months pass...
OMG THE PAZZ & JIZZ POLL MADE ME DOWNLOAD SONG..I ACTUALLY AM STARTING TO LIKE PARTS OF THIS NOW....HELP HELP!!!!!!

WHHHHERE ARE ALL THE PPL WHO VOTED FOR THIS? OUT YOURSELVES...HOW THE HELL DID THEY GET TO # 14 WTF LOL

v!ctorio, Sunday, 13 February 2005 06:28 (twenty years ago)

three months pass...
mixed feelings.... i like that she PROJECTS and worries about enunciation in a somewhat un-indie, almost "nashville sound" sort of way. but in practice the country twangy enunciation thing doesn't always work. their songs aren't usually too memorable. "pictures of success" gets way conventional and boring by the "climax" but i like those little guitar figures before that happens. "does he love you?" is a good lyric. this sounds really facile but i think their songs could be shorter.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 30 May 2005 06:41 (twenty years ago)

Pinsky? My mind has been blown.

I hear Donkey Lips works at City Walk, confirm/deny?

Cunga (Cunga), Monday, 30 May 2005 06:49 (twenty years ago)

TS: jenny toomey vs jenny lewis!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 30 May 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

I hear Donkey Lips works at City Walk, confirm/deny?

Can't confirm it, but I have seen him around Culver City.

Also, this band is horrid. Her best performance is still The Wizard.

Community Cornerstone (deangulberry), Monday, 30 May 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

my god! I never new you could see users IDs even when people put in fake names....wow I feel omiscient!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 30 May 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

omniscient even!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 30 May 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

It's ok. I new what you meant.

Community Cornerstone (deangulberry), Monday, 30 May 2005 22:58 (twenty years ago)

worst band in the world.

charleston charge (chaki), Monday, 30 May 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

Bobby Budnick.

PB, Monday, 30 May 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

Rilo Kiley is a great band. Deal with it.

Mr Deeds (Mr Deeds), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 04:45 (twenty years ago)

haha

Community Cornerstone (deangulberry), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 04:45 (twenty years ago)

Danny Tamberelli of Pete and Pete plays drums in a prog-rock band!!!

Cunga (Cunga), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 04:53 (twenty years ago)

"Portions for Foxes" is catchy and great.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 06:13 (twenty years ago)

the bitterness and contempt on this thread are really unattractive. i have only heard one song before and i liked it. i like her bits on the postal service album though, so i guess the above namecallers would maybe write me off anyhow. oh well, somebody wanna mend my scarf?

firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 06:58 (twenty years ago)

I think if you knew people who've encountered JL and her toxic-diva attitude in person, you'd be amused at the contempt. Since last fall, I've only heard worse and worse things about her demonstrably snotty (and changed) personality, from a friend who lives downtown who used to be real tight w/ the band. It's all gone to her head now.

But you know, whatever - the music is supposed to stand apart from the musician. And I still admit to liking a handful of songs from her latest album, particularly the singles; her voice is undeniable. The scarves are fine too, but I wish she wouldnt get so much credit for basically inventing them.

Vichitravirya XI, Tuesday, 31 May 2005 07:59 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

She sings out of tune. Do people realize this and not mind, or not realize it?

da croupier, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 15:28 (seventeen years ago)

I wish I could derail every indie thread by talking about Boy Meets World.

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 15:29 (seventeen years ago)

This thread is so old ILM.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 16:08 (seventeen years ago)

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 16:10 (seventeen years ago)

Oddly I like the song by the guy more than anything else on the album, maybe because he took the whole "new Lindsey Buckingham" hype and decided if you're gonna tango in the night, you need to fucking Tango In The Night.

da croupier, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 16:15 (seventeen years ago)

SOMEONE SHOULD HAVE TOLD US OH GOD THIS IS EMBARASSING

I will take this as a vote for option 2.

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 16:15 (seventeen years ago)

I actually haven't heard the one by the guy? Is it sung by the guy?

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 16:15 (seventeen years ago)

on the NEW album, I should specify. On More Adventurous he's still on that wack Conor shit.

x-post she does back-up

da croupier, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 16:17 (seventeen years ago)

"Dreamworld" on Kimmel, maybe it's the new single!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWqEn8RqEQc

I like how Jenny hates pants now.

da croupier, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 16:18 (seventeen years ago)

Like, REALLY hates pants.

da croupier, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 16:19 (seventeen years ago)

huh god they really fuck up the instrumental break

da croupier, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 16:20 (seventeen years ago)

They went through Mirage and Tango in the Night without ever making Rumours; hell, Jenny Lewis has already recorded her Belladonna.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 16:47 (seventeen years ago)

I fucking love "Dreamworld." Between this and Midlake's "Roscoe," I'm enjoying the Fleetwood Mac mini-renaissance.

jaymc, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 16:49 (seventeen years ago)

Why are they being compared to Fleetwood Mac, did some of them fuck?

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 16:56 (seventeen years ago)

Blake Sennett and Jenny Lewis. I don't think the drummer's fucking either of them though.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 16:57 (seventeen years ago)

Jesus Christ.

what r u talkin bout

gff, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 17:08 (seventeen years ago)

folk-pop to spacey vaguely electro pop, with no songs about gold dust women and songbirds.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 17:14 (seventeen years ago)

+ sucking real hard all the way through

gff, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 17:15 (seventeen years ago)

I don't know, the above clip kinda sounds like Sonic Youth minus the weird tunings to me.

xp

da croupier, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 17:20 (seventeen years ago)

nothing on the rest of the album sounds like Mac at all, though.

da croupier, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 17:21 (seventeen years ago)

the new album is really slight, but I enjoy about half of it

da croupier, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 17:24 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I'm listening to it right now for the first time since I first got it about a month ago...sounds nice. Initially, I was definitely far more impressed by More Adventurous, though.

JN$OT, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 17:32 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, I'm still far more impressed by More Adventurous.

da croupier, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 17:33 (seventeen years ago)

Absolutely--I don't really understand why Alfred seemed to prefer the new one to such an extent on his blog. Explain thyself, Alfred (j/k)!

JN$OT, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 17:39 (seventeen years ago)

well, I've cooled on it. I still prefer it to the others.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 17:56 (seventeen years ago)

The last two tracks seem to drag a bit, but tracks 1 - 9 make for a pretty damn good album. I think I preferred Jenny's solo record as well, though.
