I used to have a "Best of Laura Records" CD somewhere that included 4 or 5 tracks from Buddy Guy's '50s Chicago period. Good stuff.
Wonder where I put that CD...

wow, you learn something new every day.
Despite living within walking distance of his club -- where he still periodically plays -- I've never been there. I did see him play at a different venue about a dozen years or so ago -- around the time of Damn Right I got the Blues, which I thought was a fine album. And yeah, Josh is OTM -- Sweet Tea is a great, unexpected blast of fuzzy scuzz; sounds like he'd been checking out the Fat Possum crew.
I've got that CD of some his earliest sides, Southern Blues on Paula, which is pretty lackluster. He's still working out his style, I think, and some of the backing is frankly pretty bad. I doesn't seem like he hit the mark until he started hanging out with the Chess folks. I like how he sounds backing up the Wolf.

Sweet Tea is a great record, as stated. It's mostly tunes by Fat Possum artists, which is why it sounds like it does.

weird i just (randomly) won tickets to see buddy guy next month ... will it be good?
― tylerw, Monday, 28 March 2011 16:57 (fourteen years ago)
I saw him once a long time ago. He's very shticky, but can sure play the guitar. One of the last of the old-school blues guys.
― kornrulez6969, Monday, 28 March 2011 17:10 (fourteen years ago)
Occasionally he'll do guitar impersonations, where he runs through hendrix, clapton, bb, srv licks -- both spot-on and very funny.― briania (briania), Friday, September 3, 2004 8:10 AM (6 years ago)
^^^I've seen him do this several times, so this could be a regular part of his schtick these days. As stated above, kinda loud and overdriven, but as a chance to see one of the last original progenitors of that style, classic. He's a helluva showman.

yeah, i think that clip is pretty much why i entered to get these tix. i know guy from various sideman things, but not really as a solo artist. but it should be fun, i think!
― tylerw, Monday, 28 March 2011 17:44 (fourteen years ago)
dude can play but he definitely hams it up for a very specific audience. if you know what i'm saying. so yes "shticky" is otm, but hey free tix
― the Hogg who would be Boss (will), Monday, 28 March 2011 17:56 (fourteen years ago)
I've been listening to him for decades, but never got to see him live until last year when he opened for Tom Petty at MSG. A little hammy for sure, and the song he played off his latest album kinda sucked, but the old shit was killer.

It's 40 years on, let's hope he hasnt had a Clapton-esque loss of testicles

If he's hammy, which he is, he's hammy in the right way.

I work a block from his club in Chicago and I always mean to go see him during one of his month long residencies, but haven't managed to make it to one yet.

'sweet tea' is awesome and fits my recommend me menacing music thread, perhaps because there are a bunch of junior kimbrough covers

Damn, Scott, you're not kidding. That solo is insane.

― kornrulez6969, Sunday, 15 November 2015 01:05 (nine years ago)
Yeah, I think it might be the best of his latter-day albums (I also really like Slippin' In, the one he made with Stevie Ray Vaughan's old rhythm section).

just been listening to BG's First Time I Met The Blues album with Junior Wells, it has some killer stuff on it. The recording standard is rough as fuck, but the music exceptional.
― calzino, Tuesday, 1 November 2016 15:18 (eight years ago)
This cut from 1966 is really hot. I love the horns and Buddy just lays into the last chorus. It's a Chess production to me that sounds like they were trying to get on some Stax/Atlantic action with the horn arrangement.
