Does this look like a good purchase? And why does the thought of buying it make me feel somehow unclean?

Mark C, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'Unclean'!? Hopefully not because you're a record collector who shelled out thousands for the originals. If that's the case, then boo fuckin' hoo! Heh.

i think this question may have already been asked. about the same cd! no, man, you should get it. why not? all the people who complain about cds like this are worried that their 'territory' is being encroached on, their beloved obscurites aren't obscure any more. (despite the fact they probably heard a lot of stuff like this on the Ultimate Breaks & Beats type comps anyway!)

its a good way of hearing a load of new stuff, in a different context, and from the new stuff discovered that helps to find out about other new stuff as well.

woah! that's quite an impressive tracklisting... buy it! it's taken me years to get most of those. most of these comps are put out by hiphoppers or collectors, and tend to re-issue the good stuff a bit at a time, but that tracklisting is obscene! you all should feel guilty, you cd buying bastards. i hate you all *sob*

Oh god no, I'm not a collector or anything - I just feel a bit crappy for buying something which has been cynically compiled in the same way as "The Best Album In The World...Ever" (why was it the indie version didn't have the word indie in it? Is indie the zenith of modern music?).

Sorry about repeating the question - I did search the archives for about 10 minutes before posting. Ah well.

Anything that pisses off rare groove collector scum is cool, of course, but isn't there something a bit dispiriting abt having all the work done for you? Isn't it more fun to accidentally stumble across these samples yrself - "oh, THAT's where they nicked that bassline from" etc.

Andrew L, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oooh it has The Korgis on it. that makes me feel warm and happy for some reason.

oh, and 'no' to the indie question

michael, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It does look good. I wouldnt complain if this was in my stocking on the 25th, certainly.

I like how half the Amazon comments are "THIS PROVES MODERN MUSIC IS BAD".

I love these sorts of comps. All the Harmless "The Breaks" CDs are essential IMHO. Check out the track listing on Sampled Vol.2 while you're at it - there is a link to it on the page that Mark links to in his question. Arguably an even stronger line up.

My only quibble about this comp (both volumes) is that even less thought has gone into the running order than on your average NOW! compilation.

Just buy "Blue Break Beats Vol.4", the Blue Note compi. It has all the best tracks from that on it. Instant indie disco.

twenty-three years pass...

hi i didn't want to start a new topic but i did want to maybe start a hub of ilx/whosampled.com enthusiasts. it's one of the most valuable music resources to have ever existed imo. the big thing for me is that lists cover versions: a mixtape fodder goldmine. here's my profile; not a very prolific submitter. share yours! share weird connections you've found there! share favorite samples!
