Hope so

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 3 September 2004 12:02 (twenty years ago)

What I don't get about the whole Pete Doherty thing is that crack FUCKS your voice up royally. There is no way on earth that he'd've been able to sing at all the gigs he has if he's a regular user. I call bullshit.

Gribowitz (Lynskey), Friday, 3 September 2004 12:07 (twenty years ago)

well his voice/diction has been getting worse.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Friday, 3 September 2004 12:10 (twenty years ago)

So Pabst Blue Ribbon must be the gateway drug.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 3 September 2004 12:14 (twenty years ago)

Evan Dando's voice apparently went the way of the pipe. Not that I thought it was so special to begin with. Just sayin.'

BlastsOfStatic (BlastsofStatic), Friday, 3 September 2004 16:56 (twenty years ago)

Crack is actually old news in hipster circles - see Vice magazine (whose schtick is well past its sell-by-date)

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 3 September 2004 16:59 (twenty years ago)

altho coke still seems fairly popular here in SF, which I find kinda sad and depressing.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 3 September 2004 17:00 (twenty years ago)

Coke is very popular everywhere I go lately, meanwhile the funky nugs are in very short supply everywhere. It's rather disheartening. I blame the CIA, obviously.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:21 (twenty years ago)

That last sentence, I'm not sure if I was joking or not.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:22 (twenty years ago)

The feds pretty much ended LSD use in the States. It's no joke.

sexyDancer, Friday, 3 September 2004 17:23 (twenty years ago)

this explains courtney love's voice situation perfectly.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:25 (twenty years ago)

it's true. Acid seems to have been largely stomped out. Time to synthesize a new psychedelic drug! Y'know, for the kids!

Actually I have a running theory/joke about how new drugs = new music scenes, hopefully something akin to the 90s ecstasy explosion is right around the corner.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 3 September 2004 17:25 (twenty years ago)

I feel like such a right winger when I say finding out people I know use coke depresses me

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:27 (twenty years ago)

Imagine how they feel ... even more depressing.

sexyDancer, Friday, 3 September 2004 17:28 (twenty years ago)

coke is a stupid drug. And lots of non-right wingers feel that way (Terence McKenna, for example). Hell, coke use practically IS the embodiment of right-wing politics.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 3 September 2004 17:38 (twenty years ago)

its really hard to get MDMA in the USA

gainfully employed (ex machina), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:39 (twenty years ago)

Horseshit. Coke rocks. Terence McKenna was an old fuckin' hippy who talked to aliens.

just saying, Friday, 3 September 2004 17:40 (twenty years ago)

coke use practically IS the embodiment of right-wing politics

Sorry, give me a moment to laugh at this some more!

The last thing any drug embodies is politics. Of any kind.

just saying, Friday, 3 September 2004 17:41 (twenty years ago)

the world needs old hippies that talk to aliens more than it needs rich, self-absorbed, hipsters who don't think twice about where what's going up their nose comes from. Hell, I know who *I'd* have more fun with.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 3 September 2004 17:43 (twenty years ago)

it's a catch 22 'cuz I think drugs should be legal but at the same time people really need to be aware of who profits from U.S. drug intake and who really pays the price as a result of drug policy + users' money

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:44 (twenty years ago)

rich, self-absorbed, hipsters who don't think twice about where what's going up their nose comes from

Actually, the last thing world needs is tired-ass hippy stereotypes that went out of date 20 years ago. Coke is so much more affordable now!

just saying, Friday, 3 September 2004 17:47 (twenty years ago)

Fuck that, Gear -- I know exactly how you feel. It's so depressing.

I just went to see "Maria Full of Grace," which illustrates how over 1/2 the coke in America gets into this country (smuggled in through desperately poor 3rd-world-girls stomachs, who then shit it out in seedy motels). You watch that, and then think of some fucking Vice-d out rich kid who puts his money into THAT economy -- fuck them.

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:48 (twenty years ago)

WON"T SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN

tricky disco (disco stu), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:50 (twenty years ago)

"Coke is so much more affordable now!"

gee, do you ever wonder why? Maybe it has something to do with those Columbian deathsquads who have been fighting a civil war for over 30 years so that you can snort up and feel like yr king of the dancefloor.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 3 September 2004 17:51 (twenty years ago)

Whatever dude. Go take another bong hit and feel self-righteous.

just saying, Friday, 3 September 2004 17:52 (twenty years ago)

whatever indeed. nothing says PARTY like willful ignorance.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 3 September 2004 17:54 (twenty years ago)

that's what y'all say when you have no argument. "yr not cool like me, bleeding-heart square!"

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:54 (twenty years ago)

The last thing any drug embodies is politics. Of any kind.

gainfully employed (ex machina), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:55 (twenty years ago)

now plz resume being self righteous about ILX poll results, that's more important

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:55 (twenty years ago)

is it ok to do coke if I buy it from a LEFT WING death squad?

gainfully employed (ex machina), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:55 (twenty years ago)

Nothing says ASSHOLE like a self-righteous drug user.

(You know what, come to think of it weed is pretty much more expensive than coke these days... I'm sure this is because of the vastly more humane smuggling policies)

just saying, Friday, 3 September 2004 17:56 (twenty years ago)

Please OD

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:58 (twenty years ago)

"Nothing says ASSHOLE like a self-righteous drug user."

so true. which one of us is which, I wonder... and btw, you know you can GROW yr own weed in yr own backyard without hurting or ripping off anybody. Let's see you do that with cocaine. Or do you not wanna know how cocaine is made either?

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 3 September 2004 18:05 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I smoke weed way more often than I do coke. I just find smug weedheads insufferable. Later.

just saying, Friday, 3 September 2004 18:08 (twenty years ago)

There were indie kids smoking crack at a party here about two weeks ago (here being Athens, OH, where the hipsters say things like "I was there when "Losing My Edge" was first played" without any sense of the irony).

Slim Pickens (Slim Pickens), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:09 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha - that's great.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:10 (twenty years ago)

Coke and crack are perfect illustrations of the Law of Diminshing Returns.

shookout (shookout), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:13 (twenty years ago)

there's never a good argument those Vice mag types can come up with is there? except to say 'yr annoying, lates'

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:16 (twenty years ago)

What do people do when they're smoking crack at a party? Do they get chatty & animated, or do they zone out & stare into space? I've never been around someone doing it, and probably never will.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:17 (twenty years ago)

there's never a good argument those Vice mag types can come up with is there?

Hey, at least we can string two sentences together, unlike you High Times readers!

just saying, Friday, 3 September 2004 18:22 (twenty years ago)

Man, I don't even smoke cigarettes! anymore.

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:23 (twenty years ago)

What is this rivalry between stoners and crackhead vice-readers?

djdee2005, Friday, 3 September 2004 18:28 (twenty years ago)

High Times?! I take it you're unaware of their latest changes in "editorial policy"...

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 3 September 2004 18:31 (twenty years ago)

(I've smoked weed about five times in my life and I stopped because it made me feel ill, and there was a study on the Mexican marijuana trade that put me off it even more. Last time I had any was in 2000, before a movie.)

So this is a Widespread Panic vs. Black Dice sort of thing, great

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:31 (twenty years ago)

It's a little story the stoners like to tell themselves to feel better about what they're doing to their brain cells. "Man, at least I'm not one of those babykillingrichhipstercoke fiends..."

just saying, Friday, 3 September 2004 18:33 (twenty years ago)

Is anyone doing angel dust?

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:33 (twenty years ago)

just saying are you saying we are completely incorrect in our arguments about the coke trade?

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:34 (twenty years ago)

man, do people even bother to *make* PCP anymore? There's so many more high-grade pharmaceuticals available (like say, ketamine) it seems kinda unnecessary...

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 3 September 2004 18:35 (twenty years ago)

Apparently they still made PCP in 2002:

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:08 (twenty years ago)

I'm amazed by musicians who have the will power to sustain a lengthy heroin addiction, i.e. Mark Lanegan

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:12 (twenty years ago)

William S Burroughs, motherfuckers.

sexyDancer, Friday, 3 September 2004 19:14 (twenty years ago)

ah, but Burroughs was a life-long pot-smoker, and not (contrary to popular misconception) a lifelong heroin addict.

I have ordered from them before and been happy!

gainfully employed (ex machina), Friday, 3 September 2004 20:31 (twenty years ago)

ah, but Burroughs was a life-long pot-smoker, and not (contrary to popular misconception) a lifelong heroin addict.

Burroughs was a heroin addict from ages 30 to 45 and then occasionally afterwards, most heinously when in his sixties due to a bunch of clawing New York hangers-on who wanted to shoot up with Bill. Cunts. Well done, you stopped him writing for about five years, way to treat your "hero".

I'd be very interested to see what he'd have to say about crack, although the basics of the algebra of need probably cover it. His take on E would've been good to read too.

Gribowitz (Lynskey), Saturday, 4 September 2004 11:02 (twenty years ago)

Burroughs was on the Methadone program until his dying day...he never got clean.

joseph pot (STINKORâ„¢), Sunday, 5 September 2004 15:16 (twenty years ago)

I lived briefly in a neighborhood with a heavy (crack-oriented) drug trade, and crack-heads cut a pretty unpleasant figure.

I also knew a couple people a while back, one a close friend, who smoked crack at least once; but they both did a lot of other dumb things. (It was particularly foolish in the case of the one I was closer to, since she was a former cocaine addict.)

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Sunday, 5 September 2004 15:27 (twenty years ago)

i did grand jury duty for a year, and half the murder cases we reviewed involved crack or coke in some way.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 5 September 2004 18:42 (twenty years ago)

The other half involved indie-rock.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 6 September 2004 00:03 (twenty years ago)

The only places I've been where people smoke crack and listen to music were warehouse parties and the crack-smokers spent more time smoking crack than doing anything else so it's kinda hard to comment. They weren't hipsters, tho, unless warts and facial scarring are the new white belts...

Jacob (Jacob), Monday, 6 September 2004 00:44 (twenty years ago)

i remember interviewing mars volta last year, and them talking openly about their drug habits for what seemed like the first time ever, and i was so shocked that they were pretty heavily into smoking crack that i forgot to include a quote Omar gave along the lines of "Heroin is my favourite drug". when I revealed this fact to my features editor after the piece hit the presses, he actually wept. it was a dumb mistake, but i was *so* startled that they'd been into crack (i'd previously assumed they were sXe-ish) that mentioning the heroin (which is widespread in those underground/rock'n'roll circles) would've seemed anticlimactic, or at least implied.

stevie (stevie), Monday, 6 September 2004 10:58 (twenty years ago)

wow, that's interesting about the mars volta.

splooge (thesplooge), Monday, 6 September 2004 11:09 (twenty years ago)

I'm acquainted with this girl who is a huge Mars Volta fan and became sort-of friends with them, but who said their heavy drug use depressed her so much that she couldn't spend any time with them anymore. she said it all made her cry as well.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 6 September 2004 11:12 (twenty years ago)

Also they put out picture discs

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 6 September 2004 11:22 (twenty years ago)

it should be stressed that the Volta are all clean now. and terribly nice chaps.

stevie (stevie), Monday, 6 September 2004 12:04 (twenty years ago)

not sure if i believe that.

splooge (thesplooge), Monday, 6 September 2004 12:15 (twenty years ago)

I presented evidence to the contrary above

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 6 September 2004 12:16 (twenty years ago)

No one ever gets clean, once you've been there...from that point on it's more like a lifelong dialogue.

shookout (shookout), Monday, 6 September 2004 12:17 (twenty years ago)

i believe it.

stevie (stevie), Monday, 6 September 2004 13:21 (twenty years ago)

the mars volta are clearly still on drugs so they believe it too.

splooge (thesplooge), Monday, 6 September 2004 13:22 (twenty years ago)

how are they clearly still on drugs (ie heroin or coke or crack)?

stevie (stevie), Monday, 6 September 2004 16:48 (twenty years ago)

i meant, they must still be on it if they think theyre off it. ;)

acid will trash your mind - maybe not this decade, but next.
But equally, the same could be said of ALL other addictive samples - each have their own results & timeline.

Maybe experimenting is to live ?
- just try to follow the basic ten while doing it...

This thread is hilarious!

I know punk-er indie people who experiment with crack. Sadly it's never the fashion kids -- most of them are pillheads. The ones who're into speed sometimes dip their toes into coke, the xanax/vicodin people maybe (rarely) flirt with heroin

but for most people: weed and shrooms (easy to find, easy to love) -- and I know most of that shit does not come from south of the border, so my conscience is clear on that front. Also, this deserves to be reiterated:
creativity + weed = increased creativity - activity

Remember last year when you could find acid for like two months, and then it disappeared again? (or was that just around here?)

ghost dong (Sonny A.), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

altho coke still seems fairly popular here in SF, which I find kinda sad and depressing.

true, the number of people in SF I know who enjoy both coke and Vice magazine is troubling. I hate everyone younger than me.
