All I have shared is Dj Pica pica pica, lightning bolt and drive like jehu

MATH BLASTER MYSTERY! (ex machina), Saturday, 4 September 2004 13:17 (twenty years ago)

Make the list, jess!! I'll make one, too, even though I still can't figure out what this thread title is, or exactly what kind of list I'll be making.

I suddenly want a t-shirt that says "I Love Pizza" more than anything else in the world, even more than a visa to stay in this godforsaken hellhole of overplanned officiousness (England).

MATH BLASTER MYSTERY! (ex machina), Saturday, 4 September 2004 15:07 (twenty years ago)

I heard him on the college radio, but I forget what it sounded like. Except that it was crap. Forgettable crap is the worst kind.

artdamages (artdamages), Saturday, 4 September 2004 15:12 (twenty years ago)

Last night I went to a hipster house party! They listened to

Stereo Totale
Princess Superstar
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Peaches

I made them put in Hollertronix for awhile which did ok actually.

djdee2005, Saturday, 4 September 2004 15:13 (twenty years ago)

music to be played at my hipster house party (all on vinyl):

"Saturday Night" to start things off
Get Crunk!
Cupid et Psyche 85
The Heavy Hits of Mitch Ryder
Diamond Life or Juice, depending

also there will be no talking.

artdamages (artdamages), Saturday, 4 September 2004 15:23 (twenty years ago)

I'd much rather be at yr party.

djdee2005, Saturday, 4 September 2004 15:49 (twenty years ago)

i guess jess actually has to hear this stuff at his job, but, I dunno, it's been a while since I had to hear something that pissed me off (rather than defend most of the dance-floor indie I encounter at shpws, I'm just glad I enjoy it). I'm surprised so many people who aren't working at record stores DO hear shit they don't wanna. I'm assuming I'd hate Coheed and Cambria if I ever had to hear them.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 4 September 2004 16:18 (twenty years ago)

Last "indie" song that I ended up hearing a bit and hating was that "Vindicated" Dashboard song. Then I discovered I could tolerate it by thinking about Enrique Iglesias covering it. It's totally an Enrique song.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 4 September 2004 16:18 (twenty years ago)

are you guys going to these places to hit on girls or something? Why are you putting up with crap you don't like?

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 4 September 2004 16:20 (twenty years ago)

its all college radio's fault

artdamages (artdamages), Saturday, 4 September 2004 16:25 (twenty years ago)

dude I have a college radio show! I sometimes cue up a song with buzz and if it blows monkeygoats I just don't play it. I could make assumptions based on my own history about why people listen to shit they hate and get themselves all worked up, but I hear that Jon gets laid, so it can't be that.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 4 September 2004 16:27 (twenty years ago)

do you ever play the blow monkeys?

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 4 September 2004 16:28 (twenty years ago)

I can honestly say I haven't heard half the indie bands that people debate about on ILM. The Weakerthans (whom I love) are as about as indie as I get. Hell, I bought the Postal Service record without having ever knowingly heard a Death Cab song.

Also, The Blow Monkeys were awesome.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 4 September 2004 16:29 (twenty years ago)

Tantrum, you should buy that new album by The Fever. It's the best indie album of the year.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 4 September 2004 16:32 (twenty years ago)

I've got a Blow Monkeys video on a tape of VH1 Classic videos! It's hysterical. They're playing at a swanky club and wacky hijinks ensue.

There's a whole bunch of old school stickers at the local store and I saw one with a picture of the Blow Monkeys. I was like "woah! why do you have a blow monkeys sticker?" and they were like "we found those in the back and that was the one sticker we had no idea who the band on it was."

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 4 September 2004 16:32 (twenty years ago)

dude I have a college radio show! I sometimes cue up a song with buzz and if it blows monkeygoats I just don't play it.

I listen to the radio sometimes, too. I also review new CDs. Last year I listened to almost every new CD we got.

I don't really get too worked up about it, but I find these threads amusing.

artdamages (artdamages), Saturday, 4 September 2004 16:33 (twenty years ago)

I heard a Death Cab cover of the Smiths at a show last night. I thought it was the Smiths themselves until I was corrected (the guitar was punkier I guess). Death Cab's a weird one cuz I thought they were Built To Spill wanna-be's around their first few albums (BTS fans I knew bug 'em) and then they suddenly were "emo" when "emo" got big. They used to sound hella-anonymous to me but when I heard a bit of Transatlanticism I was like "this is pretty well crafted for shit I can't remotely sympathize with". I'm not sure when they blew up.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 4 September 2004 16:35 (twenty years ago)

bug 'em
dug 'em

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 4 September 2004 16:35 (twenty years ago)

and I keep forgetting to buy the damn Fever album. next on my list.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 4 September 2004 16:43 (twenty years ago)

hey i like the Hives!! do i have to feel guilty about that on ilm ?

Vic (Vic), Sunday, 5 September 2004 03:59 (twenty years ago)

Death Cab's a weird one cuz I thought they were Built To Spill wanna-be's around their first few albums

Not really, apart from the fact that Ben Gibbard and Doug Martsch have pretty similar voices.

The "This Charming Man" cover is from a compilation of "early shit we did before we realized we were a real band" and as such sounds very little like Death Cab at all.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 5 September 2004 05:25 (twenty years ago)

manthony, play that shit on the air, then *take it off in midsong* if you don't dig it. show 'em whatcha got.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Sunday, 5 September 2004 06:22 (twenty years ago)

you don't have to feel guilty about the Hives on my watch, Vic.

and I have taken songs off the air before. More often I'll just apologize immediately after it was truly teh suck.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 5 September 2004 06:27 (twenty years ago)

i am convinced death cab for cutie is some kind of illuminati/lizardmen plot to destroy the youth of america.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 5 September 2004 07:33 (twenty years ago)

i mean, take the name, "Death Cab for Cutie":

Death Cab= a vessel of destruction

For Cutie= for youth

a vessel of destruction for youth.

next time you listen to them, you might just be supporting this fellow right here:

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 5 September 2004 07:37 (twenty years ago)

"I'm assuming I'd hate Coheed and Cambria if I ever had to hear them."

hate is not strong enough a word for what this band inspires in sane people.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 5 September 2004 07:39 (twenty years ago)

Regarding Coheed & Cambria, I'd say it's a toss-up between many factors, notably (a) their irritating song titles, (b) that guy's fuckin' voice (he makes Geddy Lee sound like James Earl Jones), but most of all, I'd say it have virtually everything to do with THAT FUCKIN' GUY'S HAIR!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 5 September 2004 10:53 (twenty years ago)

Why the fuck are you lameasses listening to college radio??? Who the FUCK likes to listen to fucking college radio!?!?

Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 5 September 2004 13:33 (twenty years ago)

uh dude at least one person on this thread has a SHOW on college radio

The new Bjork Medulla. The screeching would not be good for a hangover or for that matter sobriety.

Jim Reckling (Jim Reckling), Sunday, 5 September 2004 14:42 (twenty years ago)

Why the fuck are you lameasses listening to college radio??? Who the FUCK likes to listen to fucking college radio!?!?

Unless its one of the rare shows that are listenable (there are a few) I am only FUCKING listening for 5 or 10 minutes at a time FUCK!?!?! For instance last time I listened there was a live Pearl Jam medley, the Chills and then the Blink 182 Song off FUCKS SAKE the I hate the president comp vol 6 and so I turned it off. I would listen to like the radio station that plays nothing but hip-hop and r&b, but I live in the godamn middle of nowhere. It's college radio or else for my lameass.

artdamages (artdamages), Monday, 6 September 2004 07:22 (twenty years ago)

I haven't heard Simple Kid, but the first time I saw him in some mag I was already disgusted. I mean, I don't know what's worse: the fact that he LOOKS like a Simple Kid, or the fact that he/they couldn't come up with anything more creative to call him than to describe exactly what he is so obviously supposed to look like: a Simple Kid!!
