The Dance Music Hall of Fame -- the hell?

Admittedly the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will never get around to this properly because they were too busy making sure Billy Joel was 'honored' but hmmm regardless:

Donna Summer, the Bee Gees and producer Giorgio Moroder will be among the first artists inducted into the inaugural Dance Music Hall of Fame.

They will be honoured alongside late singer Barry White and DJ Larry Levan at a New York ceremony on 20 September.

Recipients were chosen by a panel of 1,000 dance music professionals.

Thelma Houston and Evelyn "Champagne" King are set to perform Don't Leave Me This Way and Shame, among five songs to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Official site here. I do actually like the idea of celebrating songs specifically.

That's a pretty decent inaugural class. Larry Levan? Class choice.

Obv. it's too early to tell, but so far it seems "Dance" (to them) = disco, house.

I wonder if they'd consider someone like Derrick May, for instance.

Levan is an interesting choice because while I agree he deserves much attention it's almost rockist (for the field). Would Francois Kevorkian get in?

Would Francois Kevorkian get in?

I should hope so.

Ditto:
Kenny "Dope" Gonzales
Little "Louie" Vega
Lil' Louis

Armand Van Helden

Bobby Orlando
Frank Farian

little louie vega is halfway there already; he's on the hall of fame's board of advisers.

sylvester's halfway there too. "(you make me feel) mighty real" is one of the songs they're inducting this year.

they don't appear to have any kind of physical space. it seems to be entirely on paper (and the web), for now.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Saturday, 4 September 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i was gonna ask 'how the hell is david mancuso not one of the initial inductees???' but he is so yeah

This is what I get for skimming the site without actually reading it.

Also, surely my post should have read "Little" Louie Vega and not Little "Louie" Vega.

*hangs head in shame*

I assume May would get in eventually: All the honorees/tracks emerged in/are from the 70s, so it's both possible they didn't even consider May or anyone else from the 80s or later.

Maybe in this context "dance music" only refers to funk and disco.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 4 September 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, they might well be doing what the R/R Hall does and have a 25 year limit.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 4 September 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

They do have a 25 year limit.

No Ronan, Fatboy Slim will be honoured in due course, if only for the contribution he made to late 90s hollywood teen flicks.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 5 September 2004 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

the Chemical Brothers can be honoured for winning the "best rock instrumental" grammy award.
