Best Gig you Nearly Saw

At the Reading Festival in August 1990, I was mildly disappointed when news came over the PA that Jane's Addiction would not be playing because their bass player had gone AWOL (or something).

In later years, the fact that I narrowly missed out on ever seeing JA live has become something of a recurrent whinge.

Which classic artist(s) did you nearly see live, and what went wrong?

(Apologies if this ground has been covered before)

Zanny Gognet, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I chose to see the Jazz Butcher, rather than the Buzzcocks. When I got to the venue (Lounge Ax, Chicago - reportedly one of the Butcher's best gigs ever) I learned that the newspaper was incorrect and the gig was the previous night. Missed the JBC AND the Buzzcocks in one night.

Dave225, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

this is a really good question. hmm, i'll have to start racking my brains now!

gareth, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oh i have a Slowdive ticket for a gig in Manchester which i'd bought. it didn't happen because they split up! that must have been, um, spring 1995?

i'm not sure this counts though because i'd already seen Slowdive 3 times, they were past their best by 95, and the gig never happened because they didn't exist anymore. i'll see if i can think of anything better.

gareth, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I put my A-Levels before the Pixies last UK gig. Don't make the same mistake, kids (or do, if you want to live my life of wealthy luxury)

Tom, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I did the same, except it was my GCSE English Lit rather then A- Levels. I am a fuckwit.

RickyT, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My friend had an extra ticket for Nirvana when they were doing a small club tour right before "Smells Like Teen Spirit" really broke and I gave it a pass because I only really liked "Sliver" at the time.

In that case it would have just been fun to see them at that point, not because they're one of my favorites.

And I have missed out on seeing Nick Cave *twice*: once because I didn't read my tickets properly and got mixed up about the date of the show (proof that I really am a goofball), and last time because at the last minute he pulled out of the tour due to 9/11. Considering what a slavering fanatic I am it just seems weird I haven't seen him by now.

Nicole, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, there are now-enormous bands I could have gone and seen when they were tiny, Radiohead being the most glaring example, though my goodness the songs they had back then weren't much cop.

Tom, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

alex chilton and come at livid 95...of cvourse, i was over listening to you am i...of cours.e

geoff, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bjork. The recent tour when she was going around in big music halls and stuff. It was all supposed to happen but life got in the way. Grr..Matmos was with her too.

Honda, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I had a ticket for Nirvana in Prague (where I was living at the time) in 1994. It was cancelled due to death.

Daniel, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Magazine - Reading University 1981. I had a ticket, but they split a week before the gig after "Magic, Murder and The Weather" flopped.

Dr. C, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I missed James Brown twice. I hope he doesn't die or retire (yeah right) anytime soon.

Jordan, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I third Tom and RickyT's answer, though I probably had my mock A levels (am I between you two in age?.

Oasis played at my university while I was on my year abroad - doesn't sound much now, but bearing in mind they became one of my favourite bands when I got back I was pretty miffed.

I am also sad I never got to see one of the legendary shambolic B&S live gigs. However, December 20th may change all that...

Mark C, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Kevin Rowland - Reading 1999 - I have no idea what I was doing instead, but would have liked to see that performance for its utter audacity.

Bill, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i saw one of the shambolic b&s gigs (manchester town hall christmas 97). it was very shambolic. in fact i would go so far as to suggest it was rubbish

gareth, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Went into New York to see Lords of the New Church at the old Ritz... when I got there the show was cancelled but ended up hanging out all night with these two cool kids from Europe.

Sean, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Movietone. I was at the gig to see the first band. I didn't know who Movietone were. The first band weren't very enthusiastic about the other acts that night so I left (I was only wee, I had to go home and sleep before kindergarten or something). I am still irritated.

Flying Saucer Attack. Huggy Bear. Stereolab at the Clinton Rooms (this doesn't really count as I have seen them a couple of times now, but it would've been nice to see them at that venue). Man... Or Astroman? Christ, I even regret missing The Dirtbombs last Wednesday. The Residents- twice, because I don't know anyone else who likes them.

emil.y, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hey emily, is that the Clinton Rooms in Nottingham? with Sukia supporting? that gig was brilliant! one of the best times i've seen Stereolab. oh, um, sorry...

gareth, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In answer to Bill, I saw that Kevin Rowland performance. It WAS extraordinary. 'It seems that some people here don't have love in their hearts' he said to the hecklers, as he launched into another chorus of The Greatest Love of all. Add to the cross-dressing and the sex simulation with his dancing girls...

Daniel, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Kevin Rowland performance was EXCRUCIATINGLY bad, what are you talking about?

Erm... probably New Order, Echo & the Bunneymen and Gene Loves Jezebel at Pier Whatsits in NYC, I had to miss that one cause I didn't have a ride. Also, multiple missings of the Jesus and Mary Chain. The first show with Bobby G at CBGB's in 1985 or something really pissed me off cause me friends went and said they hung out and talked to the audience before and after. Oh, and the Rollercoaster tour was supposed to stop in Albany while I was at school there, I had front row tickets, and they CANCELLED cause I think they were the only tickets sold. Humph!

kate, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They don't still do those pier shows in New York, do they? I saw a bunch there (King Crimson; Discipline tour, my first concert, The Cure, couple others)... it was a cool venue.

Sean, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Evil Superstars in the Cactus Club. A friend CLAIMS the singer was naked and put a mike up his ass. Don't know why I didn't go. Probably didn't know the gig was taking place here in my town.

helen fordsdale, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I never got round to going to see the Smiths, for no apparent reason. Every time they played I thought, "next time..."

My friends famously passed up the chance to see the Stone Roses at the Venue in Edinburgh for the more esoteric delights of the Colourblind James Experience at Calton Studios down the road. Red faces all round...

Andrew Williams, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Missed Galaxie 500 in a hastily arranged show at The Falcon after their support slot w/ The Sundays (T&C) was cancelled (Harriet had a sore throat) - we drove past the Falcon on our way to the Mean Fiddler where we saw a truly godawful Dylan wannabe. I have a tape of the show...it makes me seethe whenever I listen to it.

Andy, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, this pier whatsit show was back in the 80s sometime. They did some fantastic ones... I didn't see the Smiths there, either, but then I'd not actually got a ticket for it, so it technically doesn't count.

kate, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

missed seeing aphex blow up[ the powerhaus' soundsystem 1998 i think at blech, which closed down the powerhaus and finished blech off. some kids threw a bench on the line at berkhamsted (london-birminghma line) and all trains were delayed by about 2 hrs.

fucking kids eh. i hate em.

test one in sheffield, kelham island museum. me and a friend were going to go, and in the absense of any where to stay, thought we could go to ny sushi to see david holmes till 6 then come home. it was too scary and adventurous an idea and we went to anohka or something instead. maybe we were scared of going up north. the festival was meant to be amazing even if some of the bands (tortoise) didnt tun up. it was in this giant turbine/big wheel/mechnaics style hall with huge engines/machines turning round while autechre and chums played. kelham island museum clearly best venue in sheffield. the damage? 1600 quid to hire..........now i know why the promoters went bust.

ambrose, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In the early 80s Danceteria in NYC had a tradition of bringing over the hothothot band from England for their New Year's Eve party, charging $30 bucks or something astronomical in early 80s terms like that. They always followed the show with another one a few days later for the usual ticket price of $8.00. So, when the Smiths came over, my new favorite band at the time, I thought it wise to save my pennies and go the second night. Then MIke Joyce that fucker got chicken pox and they flew back to England without doing any other shows. Drat the luck.

I did eventually get to see them, though. At the Pier!

I also missed Soft Cell at Roseland because at the time I foolishly thought they were one hit wonders. Duh.

Arthur, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the Sonic Boom show the other night would have been great to attend if only to hear all the bitterness.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i nearly saw belle & sebastian in Philly, when they decided not to play due to someone being sick. Of course, they decided to announce that after the opening band had played and everyone had then waited around for an hour or so. Not being the friendliest of cities, I don't think they've been back here since...could be wrong though as i lost interest in them shortly after

g, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

gareth- yeah, The Clinton Rooms (now just "upstairs at O'Reilly's" and only catering for Abba tribute bands) was in Nottingham, but I saw Sukia play with Stereolab at the Marcus Garvey Centre (changed the name to The Ballroom, but nobody calls it that) a couple of years after the gig that I missed originally- you sure it wasn't that one? 'Twas a fantastic show. Although also home to The Worst Interview Ever: I was pretty drunk anyway, but Sukia got me so stoned I could barely stand, let alone interview STEREOLAB, so, um, I made them pretend that they were a different band. And asked them questions about cheese. Oh dear.

My friends famously passed up the chance to see the Stone Roses at the Venue in Edinburgh for the more esoteric delights of the Colourblind James Experience at Calton Studios down the road. Red faces all round

??!?!?????

Colourblind James Experience are _way_ better than the Stone Roses. And the guy (Colourblind James, I guess) is dead now, so I will never ever get to see them.

emil.y, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't go to see Mo Tucker play Dublin for no reason at all. It turned out that she had Sterling Morrison playing with her. The gig was brilliant. And then he died.

DV, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

re: sterolab at the clinton rooms, about 1994, they played with yo la tengo, it snowed like you've never seen, they all wore converse one stars, it was like a faerytale, one of the best gigs i've ever seen .sorry.

cw, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Medecine at the Duchess of York, Leeds (94ish) Their equipment had been damaged by the L.A. earthquake, and instead we got lumbered support band Sleeper.

The Smiths, Manchester Free Trade Hall, sold-out minutes before I got there.

stevo, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In 1989 I had a ticket to see the Durutti Column play at the Bluecoat Arts Centre in Liverpool. It was supposed to be a special outdoor gig in the tranquil surroundings of the Bluecoat garden. I imagined that the delicate ambience of Vini Reilly's music would match perfectly with the beautiful view of the garden on what promised to be a glorious early September evening. However, it rained all day and Vini cancelled due to illness anyway.

Mark Dixon, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I bought a ticket to Iggy in NYC in early '77. The Idiot tour with Bowie as the keyboard player. My parents wouldn't let me go (I was 15) so I was planning on running away. I lived about 3 hours away. The day of the show there was a huge blizzard and Amtrak cancelled all of its trains. I was devastated. I did eventually run away to New York, though, later that year.

Arthur, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

geez. this always happens to me:

L7 at the height of their riot grrl powers in '93--I was going to have to miss the queen street car in toranno spiritualized at the same spot in 95. argh. maceo parker in mtl. i was at the luna show just down the street. oasis (NOT sold out) in 95 at this tiny club in mtl. apparently liam said "we're the best fawkin' bahnd in da worhld-why isn't this sohld awout? we've plahyed staydiumms in britin" i would have loved to have been close enough to toss a bottle of labatt 50 at him. damn. i realize my luck now, but man was i ever pissed off when i missed the soupdragons in 1993. i had snuck into a club and only was able to catch catherine wheel before i had to run through the CNE grounds to make it to ontario place to meet my mum--she was picking me and my friend up from what we said was a movie. lost that catherine wheel shirt last year. stereolab-twice. i did see them in 1996 tho, so maybe that doesn't count. no means no when i was 15. i went to see a crappy local band (voodoo chicken) instead. stoopid me.

cybele, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry about the formatting of my post. i messed up. i hope it makes sense to you folks.

cybele, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Autechre in 1996 in Detroit. I missed them by 15 minutes, the girl I was with wanted to leave, and like a dumbass, I took her home.

They played 15 minutes after we left the gig. It was a tiny North American support tour for Tri Repetai.

Michael Taylor, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

frank black.

i fell asleep while drinking whiskey in the bathtub and didn't wake up in time to go to the show.

fields of salmon, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, it appears i have conflated the 2 stereolab gigs. the one at the clinton rooms was with yo la tengo (june95), was morghanes debut and was fantastic. the 97 one was at the marcus garvey centre with sukia and was merely very good, sukia were wonderful though (i wish their records sounded like they did live, sigh)

gareth, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Colourblind James Experience are _way_ better than the Stone Roses.

Emily I do not know what to say. I am absolutely speechless. I salute you.

For what it's worth, I think Colourblind James Experience are _way_ better than the Telescopes...

Andrew Williams, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I know what you mean about Sukia, Gareth. I thought they were were geeat when I saw them with Stereolab in Reading (though one of the blokes got a bit pissed off when Katie G removed his wig) but the album was kind of blah.

RickyT, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

One of my best friends at college had tickets to see Joy Division's NYC debut and that pretty much takes the biscuit. She used to wind me up by telling me about seeing The Smiths at Danceteria (another girl at college, her dad actually OWNED Danceteria).

I've seen most of the gigs I wanted to (inc. Pixies supporting Throwing Muses) but I missed these: Stone Roses in Blackpool (didn't have the guts to skive off work), Smiths in NYC three weeks after I saw them in Chicago (Andy Rourke 'stepped on a jellyfish').

suzy, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

inc. Pixies supporting Throwing Muses

Wah! I'm sooooo jealous. Pixies and Throwing Muses together on the same bill is my idea of heaven

RickyT, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Missed the Pixies play a secret gig at the Old Trout in Windsor on the night before they headlined the 1990 Reading Festival. An amazing and much missed venue which held less than 200 people. By all accounts they played a marathon set and had to take a break half way through due to people collapsing from the heat.

GD, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Herbert.
He was scheduled to play at the Knitting Factory in downtown NYC. I had my tickets and everything, but then two planes crashed into the World Trade Center, killing thousands of people.
Needless to say, the show was cancelled.

daniel, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I skipped the MBV show for no particularly good reason - didn't want to make the drive to L.A. and I figured "oh I'll see them next time". Similarly, I skipped seeing JAMC at The Garage (even though it was only a couple of blocks away from where I was living) - of course that was the show that the Reid brothers had the massive band-ending fight. Going way back, I didn't get to see the _The Wall_ at the LA Sports Arena because I couldn't get a ride from anyone.

Chris Barrus, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Joy Division at the Starwood in West Hollywood in May 1980. Ian didn't make the trip and 999 played instead. They were good. I am old.

dan, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Primal Scream at the Metro on their last Australian tour. If I'd known that Bagpuss (i.e. Kev Shields) was playing with them at the time I'd have sold a kidney to go.
