Is it true that soca classes are usually a cover for evangelical Christianity?

Alba (Alba), Monday, 6 September 2004 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

what do you mean by "classes"?
there's plenty of mentions of god in soca, but i don't see it as covert, sinister or even slightly threatening.
i think you maybe need to look at why you think this.
anyway, if the soca night i went to a couple of fridays ago was in any way evangelical, colour me well and truly, erm... evangelized.
lukey, i'm busy right now and will tell you more later but try to get your hands on these for now:

"bumpa catch a fire" timmy
"bonnie and clyde" destra garcia
"craziness" machel montano
"toro toro" machel montano and xtatik
"lend me a hand" maximus dan
"lose your way" fayann lyons
"bhangra" sharon darlington
"indian man" denise belfon
"wine and bend over" denise belfon and ghetto flex
"tempted to touch" rupee
"if i can't have you" rupee

stelfox, Monday, 6 September 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone had told me that they'd had friends who'd had this experience. I am increasingly certain that I have confused soca with something else, so don't mind me.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 6 September 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Carnival in Brooklyn today!!!!!!

And the route is one block away from my house, and it's a sunny day!

3.5 million people expected. I was awoken by the sounds of:

"the band coming" - shurwayne winchester
"is carnival" - destra & machel
"get on bad" - onika & bunji garlin

getting a late start on the day.

pheNAM (pheNAM), Monday, 6 September 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Just get as many Mighty Sparrow records as you can. It begins and ends there.

MC Frosty Flake, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh no! Old threads! Run away!!

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Doesn't Sparrow definitively *dis* soca in his song "Soca Man"?

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 07:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Just get as many Mighty Sparrow records as you can. It begins and ends there.

no it doesn't.

and i'm not saying old threads are useless but if you want to get any up-to-date info they aint gonna help much - unless, as i said, they are regularly updated.

stelfox, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

bachelor is by scrunter. not surprising he remains unmarried, though. i mean would you want to trade in your perfectly good name to become "mrs scrunter"?

stelfox, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 08:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Dave stop being snotty. Paul Sci-fi Soul's thread, the last one that I linked up there, has got amazing video which will be interesting to anyone who's interested in soca. It's from all the way back in February 2004.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
I saw Machel Montano & Xtatik at the Crossroads, outside DC last night. Mostly fun fun fun.

Steve K (Steve K), Saturday, 22 October 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

I did not realize how popular Montano is with the ladies. They were ringing the stage, and grabbing him and jumping on stage to hug him.
Everone was jumping up and down and many were waving flags froom their homelands(mostly Trinidad flags). There were about 500 or so people there. I think I saw one other white guy than me, and about 3 white gals (if such demographic issues interest any of you).

Steve K (Steve K), Monday, 24 October 2005 02:55 (twenty years ago)

Wayne Marshall was asking on his Wayne and Wax blog when/if Simon Reynolds referred to soca being like the techno sub-genre 'happy hardcore.' I think Reynolds did say it, not sure when. Soca does have that rep.

curmudgeon, Monday, 24 October 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

I think Stelfox only posts on Dissensus now. ... Mighty Sparrow's touring the USA right now, you old-school calypso fans...

curmudgeon, Monday, 24 October 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

bump to the super-fast soca beat.

curmudgeon (Steve K), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 01:42 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

Plenty of soca artists coming to DC in a few weeks for DC Carnival. I still maintain that with the proper marketing Machel Montano could win the support of a crossover audience as he nicely incorporates rock, r'n'b, and more into his danceable soca sound. He will be in DC at a location tba Carnival night June 28th.

curmudgeon, Friday, 23 May 2008 13:09 (seventeen years ago)

one year passes...

Another year, another DC Caribbean Carnival parade, concerts, club shows. I still like me some soca

curmudgeon, Friday, 26 June 2009 14:07 (sixteen years ago)

one year passes...

Another year...and 5 years since I saw and was wowed by Machel Montano and band, but I can't seem to convince anyone that his "jump-up" music is more unique than that of many soca performers...

curmudgeon, Monday, 28 June 2010 20:53 (fifteen years ago)

Soca always gets dismissed by some the way they dismiss some techno.

I should get the latest Soca Gold comp. It has a Rickey Jai cut

curmudgeon, Monday, 27 June 2011 04:15 (fourteen years ago)

Rikki I mean

curmudgeon, Monday, 27 June 2011 04:16 (fourteen years ago)

XP, the new Soca Gold isn't great. Not sure it's worth having, unfortunately.

The 2010 edition was good, though.

модный хипстер (ShariVari), Monday, 27 June 2011 08:57 (fourteen years ago)

Is there a better 2011 comp out on another label? Or do you just think the 2011 slate of songs is not as good; or did the label pick the wrong carnival hits?

curmudgeon, Monday, 27 June 2011 13:43 (fourteen years ago)

Honestly, 2011 wasn't a vintage year. I haven't heard much worth getting excited about.

модный хипстер (ShariVari), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 21:15 (fourteen years ago)

agreed, from stuff i've heard last year's tuneage was better, though i also thought that the 2010 batch was distinctly weaker than the one from 2009 - so maybe it's just me getting a bit tired of soca, i dunno? i'm definitely much more into chutney nowadays, lost of strong songwriting in recent years (esp. the Pungalunks Factory stuff) and rum-monomania is always fun!

a few straight up soca tunes by chutney gals i'm loving at the moment:

I thought 2010 was pretty good but Palance and Barman kind of overshadowed everything else.

Something Harder is definitely one of the best of 2011.

модный хипстер (ShariVari), Thursday, 30 June 2011 22:41 (fourteen years ago)

don't really check for this stuff anymore but palance video is always and forever a go-to antidote for boredom:

r|t|c, Thursday, 30 June 2011 22:49 (fourteen years ago)

never properly got into "Palance" myself (the song, that is - the video is beyond awesome of course!), but "Barman" is the shit... kinda into the video for that one as well, just a bunch of terminally uncool dudes who think wearing tight t-shirts and sunglasses makes them cool - the kind of people who are basically barred from US/western-Euro pop imagery, even in this brave new post-Jersey Shore world

i'm still catching up with recent soca & chutney - anything else from 2011 you'd recommend ShariVari?

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 28 August 2012 14:24 (thirteen years ago)

i was at carnival this weekend and soca basically seems like funky gabba

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 28 August 2012 14:24 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, there's been a tendency towards more frenetic riddims in power soca in recent years.

Temporarily Famous In The Czech Republic (ShariVari), Tuesday, 28 August 2012 14:28 (thirteen years ago)

haha yes "power soca" is a good way to describe what i was hearing

one of the floats was sponsored by a soca radio station (can't remember the name) and their tagline was something like NO TALK - ALL SOCA - 24/7

i was like, that almost sounds like a threat

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 28 August 2012 14:36 (thirteen years ago)

But someone always has to complain and mock:

http://www.sabotagetimes.com/life/why-i-detest-the-notting-hill-carnival/

Gosh, I’m just so liberal and open-minded and Notting Hill Carnival is such a beautiful union of so many cultures! OMG! Rum punch and soca music and jerk chicken and Bob Marley!” It’s OK, you’re not being marked on anything. You don’t have to force yourself to dance awkwardly to homophobic bashment tunes and if the food is not to your taste it doesn’t make you a racist. Calm down, once Tuesday comes around, you can go back to crossing the road from the mumbling Rastafarian man that scares you.

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 28 August 2012 14:38 (thirteen years ago)

why would you post something so shit here??!

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 28 August 2012 14:42 (thirteen years ago)

Carnival in Brooklyn is Monday September 3rd

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 28 August 2012 15:46 (thirteen years ago)

The Brooklyn one has a decent line-up - Machel Montano, Mr Vegas, Black Stalin, etc.

Temporarily Famous In The Czech Republic (ShariVari), Tuesday, 28 August 2012 16:56 (thirteen years ago)

Miami one is in October I think.

I saw Machel Montano once and think he's great, but I see he's getting flack from old-school Calypsonians for sucking up to Olympic participants (and only doing so with fellow soca artists and not old-school folks who prefer more commentary in their lyrics)

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 15:26 (thirteen years ago)

There's been a backlash brewing around Montano for a while. Partly because he's probably the only soca star who regularly features on records by big international performers and partly because he's so entrenched at the top of the industry at home. He doesn't come up with a lot of exceptional material but his fanbase is so solid it gives him a huge advantage when it comes to carnival competitions.

Temporarily Famous In The Czech Republic (ShariVari), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 19:59 (thirteen years ago)

Superman costume is a nice touch.

The first single to come from Montano's AZ deal will be a remake of "Mr. Fete" due this summer, featuring French R&B singer Matt Houston. "

Ladysmith Mombazo collaboration could be more interesting, but wh knows.

Its been ten years now since I was wowed by seeing Machel Montano and band live. Alas, I wimped out on seeing him this weekend at a late-night DC gig. Checked out photos and Instagram video and it looked like a fun, packed (almost 2,000 or so) show. I need to catch up with his music. He never quite had the crossover success I thought he could achieve years ago. I still like his more tuneful stuff better than his straight-forward speedy soca dance numbers
