1981 single by Geoff Leigh's post-punk band Kontakt Mikrofon Orkest. Leigh was an early member of Henry Cow, but his own music is kind of a post-Nuggets, damaged DIY thing. He's got several releases (none on CD that I know of), including the Black Sheep and the Red Balune, which are all pretty crazy (and often good). KMO are probably my fave of his projects, and if you have slsk, look for this. Reference points would be This Heat, Homosexuals, Public Image Ltd. That is all.

No, Officer was Tim Hodgkinson's band. Black Sheep, as I recall, is less "pop", more damaged, but I should go home and listen again. Red Balune is the shizz tho, kind of like a post-punk Art Bears + occasional all-out pandemonium.

Upon reflection (and listening to it now), the Black Sheep were more like damaged, DIY synth-pop. Kind of a Der Plan feel in places, but with occasional woodwinds and Leigh's vocals, it ends up just sounding like him. His solo EP The Chemical Bank is from 1979 is more of a post-punky, band feel, but is similarly out there. Sometimes his vocals remind me of John Lydon.

Another of his projects was Lowest Note on the Organ. I have their self-titled EP from 1983, and it's less punk, with intricate guitar and woodwind lines, and some cool Euro folk touches. And like the others, it's pretty strange.

I just learned tonight that Fred Frith and Chris Cutler play on the Red Balune "Maximum Penalty" single, which I guess contributes to its Art Bears-ness.
