OPO Plastikman album

Has to be Closer I say. It's an 'ambient' record that leaps out at you.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 04:05 (twenty-one years ago)

omg ... when I saw the thread title, the first thought in my mind was "I'm going to say 'Closer' and everyone else who posts here will say I'm nuts".

Now they'll say we're nuts.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 04:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess the Plastikman canon would say OPO = "Sheet One", but I think that's his worst.

"Closer" is by far the highlight of his career thus far. It's one creepy, decaying husk of a record (a compliment, obv.).

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 04:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Sheet One - is that even really that canonical? It seems so . . . primitive compared to what he's done since.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 04:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I think he was part of the canon around 1993-4. He was held in high regard once the UK ambient and techno scene hit it "big" around that time (back home he was already considered a semi-legend -- part of the second wave of Detroit techno). But once he started with the ultra-stripped down stuff (~ 1996 with the "Concept" series), I think he alienated a lot of the fairweather people.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 04:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I think even "Musik" makes "Sheet One" sound primitive. The best bits on "Sheet One" ("Spastik", "Helikopter") are still great, but the deeper and funkier "Musik" holds up far better as an album.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 04:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Dex FX 909 (that's right, the first one) is the best thing he's done. And minus orange too.

tylero (tylero), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 06:26 (twenty-one years ago)

> Dex FX 909

i still have real trouble getting through this in one sitting. but love the dark ambient stuff of Artifakts / Consumed (Pakard being the one track that sticks in my mind).

didn't bother with Closer after Decks... (and had no money at the time) but listening online (plastikman.com) it looks like i'll have to.

koogs (koogs), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 07:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I go for Closer too!

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 10:59 (twenty-one years ago)

AC/DC Gangbanger mix into minus orange = one of the greatest mixes i've ever heard

I think I like Musik best.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Consumed, mainly because it has that one track that sounds like "empty factories dreaming" (review in The Wire stated something like that and rightly so).

Omar (Omar), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the locked groove on the vinyl for "Orange". I could mix on top of that all day long.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Closer to the edit

paulhw (paulhw), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Artifacts[bc]

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

"Artifakts" is so underrated. "Schizophrenik" and "Hypoconriak" might be the most mind-warping, dizzifying pieces of music ever made. If I listen too closely to them, I can literally feel myself becoming faint.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm shamed. Using a "c" instead of a "k" for anthing to do w/ Plastikman...

"Rekall" is a bloody hott song.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm probably stating the obvious here but Dex FX & 909 as well as DE9 are DJ mixes and don't count as Plastikman albums.

I'll have to say Artifakts [bc]. Underrated is right.

jeffery (jeffery), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

As his press agent for a couple years, I've gotta pull rank on all y'all and say that Artifakts and Consumed own this thread ;)

Closer's pretty dope, too.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

and yeah, just to be a technicality wonk, both DE9 records are filed under 'richie hawtin', as opposed to P-Man ;)

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I gotta go with Artifakts. "psyk" is the song I think of when I think of Plastikman. And I thought Closer was supposed to stink so I never got it. Now I have to like buy MORE music -- thank you; thanks.

wickerbocker please (hammy), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

this is a difficult one
I have Plastikman,Circuit Breaker, Hard Trax and Richie Hawtin..
I would have to say I much prefer the earlier stuff
I had grit and soul
The latest stuff is too much effect trickery and bad hair for me.

espresso fetish (espresso fetish), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

nine months pass...
I had a choice between Artifakts and Consumed, and I went for the former because it was teh cheap.

Did I do good? This is my first Plastikman.

Semaphore Burns (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

I go for Closer too!
-- jed_ (colin_o_har...), September 7th, 2004. (jed)

I'm such an idiot, i meant "Consumed". I've never even heard closer to my knowledge.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

Artifakts is probably the last Plastikman album I'd recommend to someone who hadn't heard his stuff.

The first would be "Musik".

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

four years pass...

ALL five of them. Srsly.

StanM, Thursday, 13 August 2009 06:47 (sixteen years ago)

for me it's prob 'consumed' vs the concept 1 96 stuff, tho i'm not sure that's even done under plastikman

mark cl, Thursday, 13 August 2009 12:44 (sixteen years ago)

there was some hokey shit on 'closer'

mark cl, Thursday, 13 August 2009 12:44 (sixteen years ago)

could've lived without the reznorian angst on that piece, and more super deep consumed-style "what was that sound" sounds.

ETERNAL WAR AGAINST THE DICKS IS ALL WE CAN RESPECT (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 13 August 2009 14:03 (sixteen years ago)

musik. took serious drugs to that record.

cutty, Thursday, 13 August 2009 14:50 (sixteen years ago)

Consumed sounded mindblowing when it came out, but I haven't bothered to listen to it for years. Ditto for Concept (which I think was released as Richie Hawtin, not Plastikman). I think this dude is kinda overrated, nothing he's done hasn't been done better by others.

Tuomas, Thursday, 13 August 2009 16:26 (sixteen years ago)

u so crazy

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 13 August 2009 18:04 (sixteen years ago)

The track 'Consumed' is about the best night driving music ever.

They are all good but I have listened to Consumed and Musik the most.

Nice presents for preorderers: 2 rehearsal/test versions (Hypokondriak & Ask Yourself/Marbles) for his live tour, an Arkives mix CD (different but also somewhat similar from the TSUGI 36 cover mount mix cd that appeared in Germany recently) and a signed holiday card! Woohoo! :-)

StanM, Saturday, 25 December 2010 21:39 (fourteen years ago)

Oh, and there's this iPhone/iPad remix thingy too: http://remiix.net/
(Don't know what it's like, I'm on Android.)

StanM, Saturday, 27 August 2011 20:38 (fourteen years ago)

CONSUMED! I auditioned it (I'm going to start using audiophile terms exclusively wherever I can) recently for the first time in years and it was as immersive and cinematic as I remember it. I did love Closer to the Edit, but Consumed is a real achievement.

We understand that this collection is expensive but due to the quality level of the designs and materials used, there is only so much we can do with the final prices. We will be launching a continuation of our special-edition classic t-shirts in the next few days.
