I find myself temporarily at a loss, having d/l'd out of curiosity a bunch of random newish music that turned out to be mostly crap. I love melody and noise and cleverness and weirdness and the Big Beat, equally. The following are my favorites right now, in case there is any way to distill from this motley list those few certain perfect songs that are missing from my world.

Waterloo Sunset - Kinks (only heard this for the first time yesterday -- GOOD GOD)
Suspect Device - Alternative Ulter (burned out on "Alt. Ulst." from overlistening)
Couldn't Get It Right - Climax Blues Band
Burn My Eye - Radio Birdman
Mother Sky - Can (the only Can song I really love, so far)
Hot On the Heels of Love - Throbbing Gristle (ditto TG)
Sue Me Jack - Pavement

Obviously I'm already checking out other music by these groups, but any and all pointers are welcome. Thanking you in advance, I remain.

Uh, that's Suspect Device by Stiff Little Fingers, I meant.

Thanks! ("Where Were You?" is already much loved.)

I'm at the end of a long queue for "Empty Shell." Now downloading Boredoms' "Super Are" and Built to Spill's "Carry the Zero." Just got "Leaf House" by Animal Collective and I dug it. Other suggestions to be followed up on directly. Tx again, y'all.

The Only Ones - 'It's The Truth'
Devo - '(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction'

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

So far I haven't been able to get any of these (already had "Stranded" and "Satisfaction"). Got 'em queued. Will report back. Try to contain your suspense.

In other d/l news, Built to Spill did nothing for me. Boredoms, on the other hand...I took a tip from elsewhere on ILM and acquired "[two circles]" from Vision Creation Newsun. Now THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKIN' ABOUT!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

which can songs have you heard?

try also:
high rise - "ikon"
pavement - "elevate me later"
stiff little fingers - "alternative ulster" (i imagine youve heard this, but it knocks me out every time. ongoing debates between me and my friends about suspectdevice v. alternativeulster...)
oneida - "jazz is the teacher, funk is the preacher"
monoshock - "tom guido philosophically stoogely" (yes im aware its a goofy-ass title)
faust - "its a rainy day, sunshine girl"
amon duul II - "wolf city"

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

"Wasted Life" by Stiff Litter Fingers rocks me world way more than either "Suspect Device" or "Alternative Ulster".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

other people whose taste i trust have told me that before, alex - i dunno - it didnt do as much for me as the other two. those two songs are like everything thats perfect about punk-pop to me. maybe ill grow into wasted life...

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Peter, I just got "It's A Rainy Day, Sunshine Girl" yesterday. Big YES to that. And I vote "Suspect Device," but only because I've almost ruined "Alternative Ulster" for myself via repetition. And Alex, "Wasted Life" is now on my list.

snazz, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Graham Lewis & B.C. Gilbert - "Rolling Upon My Day"
Sudden Sway - "Tales of Talking Town"

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah - wire seems appropriate...

are you averse to album recommendations, snazz?

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I mainly wanted individual song suggestions (I'm d/l'ing with a slow connection), but I'll certainly take album rec's too.

I love Wire, but haven't heard the members' other stuff.

snazz, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

The Fall - 'English Scheme' (nice and short so quick to dl, too)

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Magazine - 'Definitive Gaze'

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not that keen on the Fall.

snazz, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

yet

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

"Cakes In The Home", by Crash Course In Science, a band from Philadelphia around 1979. Rinky-dink drum machine, sporadic, lurching oscillators, paranoid/sarcastic lyrics, close-mic'd power tools here and there--propulsive, really catchy, lots of fun. I think another one of their songs may be on one of the Hyped2Death cd's.

Stephen Boyle (SBoyle), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

"Dragnet" by the Vibrators
"Coldbeat" by the Sound
"I Hate Milk" by Air Miami
"Day Is Gone" by Cardiacs

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks again to everyone for these suggestions. I've obtained all but a few of them (no Blunstone, Carr, Cardiacs, Sound, Gilbert & Lewis, or Sudden Sway yet). Can't say yet if any are going to be all-time faves, but I enjoyed 'em a LOT, especially "One Chord Wonders" and "Ikon." BTW, have to agree w/Peter that "Wasted Life" does not quite come up to "Suspect Device" or "Alternative Ulster" for me; and I persist in my Fall heresy. Now I must go and make one hell of a mix CD with these, then pursue my newest obsessions: early Chills and late Boredoms. Cheers.

"Wasted Life" does not quite come up to "Suspect Device" or "Alternative Ulster"

Hmmm. Oh well, sorry to suggest otherwise, then. I think I might prefer "Wasted Life" as it was the first thing of theirs I'd heard (courtesty of a mix-tape from a friend) and I just revelled in its furious bile. By comparison, "Alternative Ulster" and "Suspect Device" sound positively poppy. "Wasted Life" just strains at its leash, wishing it could ravage your jugular.
