DISCONUEVO
Thursday, September 9th, 9-1am

the summer electronic music series at the Milky Way in J.P.
bows out with a special showcase of new dance music.

They call it: MICROHOUSE

A term coined by American eletronic music writer Philip Sherburne,
microhouse is a style pioneered by Canada's Akufen, Chile's Ricardo Villalobos,
America's own Ghostly International,
and German labels like Perlon, Playhouse and Klang.

It's pure 4/4 house music, with a bumpin bassline and
mixable tempos, but stripped-down and sexed-up (The
New York Times called it "music for the clubs and your iPod").
Breathy vocals, sometimes edited for funkiness,
ride over sleek sounds of strings,
clicks and claps. Thoroughly modern but innately
melodic, the micro sound is rapidly
catching on: from South America to Europe,
Russia to South Africa

and tonight it shows up in Jamaica Plain.

Our resident DJs stretch it out for you all night long:
David Day and Erik Pearson, who's Diversion night at River Gods
has kept people talking for months.

And like it says, this is the last disconuevo
party of the summer, so to make it worthwhile
we'll lay out some free CDs you
can take home with you. howzat?

Hope to see you this Thursday in J.P.

ladies free!

― gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 02:35 (twenty-two years ago)

That is the most eloquent club promo I've ever read! You should obviously wear a Kompakt t-shirt as they seem to have neglected mentioning it in their microhouse primer!

― Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Why do I have a feeling that this gig is going to be filled with white upper-middle class college students dancing ironically?

― Disco Nihilist (mjt), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 02:50 (twenty-two years ago)

omfg i am so there!

are you really going scott?

― Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

MASSACHUSETTS IN BEING BEHIND NYC SHOCKA

― MATH BLASTER MYSTERY! (ex machina), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

um, i don't know, sterl. it's kinda short notice. and i live on an island. and it's kind of a hassle getting off of the island. and i don't actually know where jamaica plain is. but it does look like it could be fun.

― scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

jp is a few miles away from me. rock.

― Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i didn't even know that you lived in massachusetts. so how far from boston are you? and where is jamaica plain?

― scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm in boston. JP is just the southwest part (sorta) of boston.

― Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, BOSTON? When the hell did you leave Chicago?

― Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

About a year ago, dude.

― Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 03:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Not that I made a big deal of it or anything.

― Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 03:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Clearly so!

― Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

THe wife and I are considering going to this. She has never heard microhouse but we've both heard that Milky Way is cool.

― Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i will be heading out to the vineyard. don't do microhouse.

― Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Save a dance for Sterling, Dan!

― scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 11:05 (twenty-two years ago)

dance music people have this incredible knack for writing stuff that makes no sense: Thoroughly modern but innately melodic.

― jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 11:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Milky Way is fun ... they have candlepin bowling and Blue Moon on tap!

― zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

and it always looks like a kids birthday party.

― AaronK (AaronK), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

mikly way is cool and no its not full of white hipsters or whatever. and yeah nyc is ahead of boston and the rest of the country. brilliant. do they still have pizza at the MWay? get it, the stuff kills.

― kephm, Wednesday, 8 September 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

wonder if i should make the trek uuppp...........
anyone know anything about the dj?

― brock (brock), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

mr david day hisself posted about this on the kompakt thread. he is cool, you folks should go.

― Dave M. (rotten03), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I've always wondered if microhouse parties are microfun -- someone report back, 'kay? Want to know what that dance floor looked like.

― Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

"microfun"! You have made my day (I'm easy like that).

― Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I got invited to a Ninja Tune Party in Nantucket.

― Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

they have candlepin bowling and Blue Moon on tap!

growing up in boston, i thought candlepin bowling was bowling. one of the many ways that growing up in boston screws you up for life.

― fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

hey, I just moved to Jamaica Plain...maybe I'll go, it's either that or Lightning Bolt. OF course, I can walk to the Milky Way. That's kind of enticing.

― Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

"I can't wait to go to this!" says Michael like a giddy fool.

Hopefully the 6 other Michael Gills in Boston will show up too.

Lightning Bolt is playing the same day (about 4 blocks from my apartment), so ironic indie kids may be a no show at Disconuevo.

― Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

where are Lb playing?

― kephm, Wednesday, 8 September 2004 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

they should play in your apt

― kephm, Wednesday, 8 September 2004 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

The Milky Way is way cool, as zaxxon25 said. If I remember correctly, there's a quaint Italian restaurant above it that serves pretty good grub, too.

― David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

milky was is best known for the mary mary all star karaoke, but i ve never gone

― kephm, Wednesday, 8 September 2004 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

LB are playing at Great Scott's, which is where the rather good 80s club night Dynasty is going to be now (it used to be at the milky way).

― Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary Timony used to hang out in Jamaica Plain, right before she moved.

― Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

great scotts is on a corner, right?
i always ran into mary in chinatown. and at smog shows

― kephm, Wednesday, 8 September 2004 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Great Scotts is on the corner @ the Harvard Avenue T stop. It doesn't even look like a club from the outside.

― Micro F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah the bc hangout, thanks. i should be there

― kephm, Wednesday, 8 September 2004 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Microtraitor!

― Micro F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

just out of curiosity, what Ghostly artists are considered 'microhouse' (aside from matt dear who's actually a Spectral artist)?

― ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary Mary All-Star Karaoke was better at 608. Woe.

― Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Aw, I saw one of my friends do a show at 608. It was cool (my parents were there and in town so they came to the show).

― Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

like i said before, ive never been. but i'll take your word on it

xpost

― kephm, Wednesday, 8 September 2004 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I notice the invitation does not say in what year the party will be held. I'm guessing 2002.

― Dan I. (Dan I.), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

david day is spinning tonight at the phoenix landing! i have no idea what the phoenix landing is! i even wonder how david day knows who i am and how i ended up on his mailing list. he is in charge of publicity at forced exposure. this i learned from his e-mail. and i did just BUY something from forced exposure. hmmmm.....

― scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

well, if it's any consolation to you, david is a great guy and i'm sure he only means well.

― ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh no, I don't care. I just never got e-mails from him before.

― scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

And hey, if people go to this thing cuzza this thread then his e-mail worked! still, i would rather get japanese psych cds from the forced exposure warehouse then an e-mail....

― scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

david, the phoenix landing is my favorite venue in boston. it's just a smallish irish pub that has great weeklies. wednesday nights (assuming it's still the redlight crew) are amazing, and famous in certain circles. derrick carter played there a couple years ago.

x-post

― Lukas (lukas), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

So, uh, any chance of a microhouse party in Texas? Yeah, um, prolly not.

― JC (JC A.), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Microcrunk. It must happen.

― noodle vague (noodle vague), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

crunk can get pretty micro when the syrup is flowing.

― scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I need to start a thread on crap codeine/gin sizzurp imitation recipes.

― noodle vague (noodle vague), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Phoenix Landing is like a block before the Middle East in Cambridge. Ellen Allien was supposed to play there before her visa trouble.

― Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Since this has turned into a Jamaica Plain thread, I feel the need to come out and say that I, too, live there and have for 12 years. It is clearly the place to be in Boston what with this microhouse and all.

Re: Milky Way - great spot. Yes pizza, yes bowling, it's just like you all remember it.

― southern lights (southern lights), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

milky way is a good spot, i've been there a few times, i am actually semi tempted to go to this

― artiste (artiste), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I lived in Jamaica Plain for a month once and it must have been the worst, most ghetto street in the neighborhood. I was constantly approached by drug dealers and lowlifes, and had to abruptly move out because things were getting VERY shady one weekend. This was right where Huntington Ave turns into South Huntington Aveunue. The area of JP where the Milky Way is located seems to be much nicer though.

― Micro F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, that's the border of JP and Mission Hill, and can be very rough. The Milky Way is basically on the border of nice and not-so-nice JP.

― southern lights (southern lights), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

one more time. ladies free / guys $5

― manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I may change the name of my blog to that.

― manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm wondering how many "ladies" will even show up to Disconuevo, barring the DJ's girlfriends.

― Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 9 September 2004 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

fucking hell I wish I lived in Mass. oh wait no I don't. but that party looks mad fun, GO MASS. FOLK GO!

― Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 9 September 2004 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Gah! last minute setback. i have an ear infection so no sense of balance! I can go, but I will not be able to even slightly dance.

― Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 9 September 2004 09:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah Great Scotts, memories. I miss living in Allston.

― Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 9 September 2004 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

did anyone ever go to the appliance of science in cambridge? i went once or twice and it never seemed to draw many people. and no one danced. but that's probably because the cellar is really small.

i did see keith whitman and greg davis there once.

giving a slideshow of tour photos.

anyway, i hope this is more fun.

― Matt B. (Matt B.), Thursday, 9 September 2004 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

IT STARTS

― Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 9 September 2004 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

okay just got back from this. it was fun! really enjoyed hearing tunes such as wuzzelbud kk, m mayer's love is stronger than pride, j koncke (sp?) "timecode" on the dancefloor for the first time evah. i was disappointed by the sparsely occupied dancefloor, but after a coupla drinks me and my friend didn't really care too much about that and were shaking some ass (okay i was still embarassed that there was a total of like 6 people including us on the floor the entire night; if you are that random guy who kicked the dancing off pls speak up). there are really nowhere enough good dance nights around boston so i can't complain too much, i guess.

― +, Friday, 10 September 2004 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt B, I went to the Appliance of Science a bunch. The residents were all really nice guys and great musicians. Plus it was: walking distance+beer+cozy+beats.

I even played there once: mp3 tracklist

― Lukas (lukas), Friday, 10 September 2004 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

(dodgy mixing alert)

― Lukas (lukas), Friday, 10 September 2004 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Just got back. Pretty much a bust as far as the turn out goes, I counted maybe 20-30 people in attendance. Dancefloor reached a peak of 5 people at once.

As for the music, it was pretty much straight-up steely/abstract micro, barely any pop crossover at all. I must have left right before "Timecode" was played....had to catch the bus/T all the way back.

>>if you are that random guy who kicked the dancing off pls speak up

That was me!

― Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 10 September 2004 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I ended up not going. SUE ME.

― Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Friday, 10 September 2004 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

meh. i wanted to go but the ear virus thing got the best of me.

― Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 10 September 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, it is not Microhouse, but here's another potential interesting club night for Bostonians:

Friday, September 24th
Enormous Room
567 Massachussets Ave.
10pm - 2am
http://www.enormous.tv

Join us and the Enormous Room staff for a 4 hour mix of dance music, as All Stars debuts a new kind of dance party. During our previews in September we've tailored the set list, tested the segues and... oh yeah... bought a goddam tonne of music... now we can mix it for you.

In the weeks ahead, expect eclectic guest DJs primed for the A.D.D. world. DJs from Bosstown, New York, Canada and all around New England. The new mix is one that switches things up, drops party favorites but respects cutting-edge rhythms. DJs like Diplo [and Hollertronix, Philly], Too Many DJs [Belgium], DJ Language [NYC] and Optimo [UK] have marketed this eclectic mix style, and this Friday Easy [Boston] will join the fray.

― Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 23 September 2004 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

My wedding reception was at this joint. Best place to hang in the Boston area. I will be there.

― southern lights (southern lights), Friday, 24 September 2004 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there any room to dance? I hear it is just a bar/restaurant.

― Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 24 September 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, has Sterling been on ILX since this thread? How is his ear?

― scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 24 September 2004 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

What is the name of your island?

― Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 24 September 2004 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

My island? I live on Martha's Vineyard Island. We have Lobsterhouse parties here.

― scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 24 September 2004 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

all the tears i have lived in Mass and ive never been to the Vineyard

― kephm (kephm), Friday, 24 September 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Michael, there is sort of room to dance. It's really a lounge. There isn't a proper dance floor but there are open spaces. They keep capacity tightly controlled.

― southern lights (southern lights), Friday, 24 September 2004 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...

any microhouse/minimal/etc in boston these days?
