Just curious--but what is everyone's head at regarding Tomlab? Good or bad or indifferent?

heard of tomlab through the Phenomelogical Boys album(a fun, accomplished one that is probably 400% too jokey for the ilm congregation) I like tujiko noriko, at least shojo toshi, didn't enjoy hard ni sasete or whatever too much, sampled xiu xiu and my nose curled, I'll give em another chance I guess. Didn't know the Books were on there, they get kind of tiresome for me, the album I heard anyway

rafael toral & casiotone for the painfully alone are 2 of my favorite performers

tujiko noriko, adventures in helsinki are pretty good. the books have a couple really good songs but a lot of it gets old quick.

they are a small label, run by a german man named "tom".

I want to hear that Phenomelogical Boys cd...

oops "Phenomenological". I'm sure I've ruined your ability to spell that word for all time, hope it's not the key to heaven or something.

I love tujiko, xiu xiu and casiotone. Most of the rest I've yet to hear, but that's a pretty good strike rate.

xiu xiu is not on tomlab, are they?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Yup, Xiu Xiu is on them! I love love love Tujiko... the others, it's hard to get a feel for the label in some ways, which makes them so cool!

this is a choice little label. Tom Steinle appears to put a lot of consideration into his release slate, and he's less prone to stylistic ruts than Morr Music or CCO. the early Tom catalog is my favorite - Visor (a Tomlab/Karaoke Kalk electro-acoustic allstar tribute to Laughing Stock); Tom's brilliant "Summer DSP" 10"; Novisad (quality spatial/dimensional digital ambient); Sack & Blumm (toytronica done right); the fine For Friends comps; Juergen de Blonde's inventive Hidden Rabbit (which, like all his Koehn releases, should have been huge); Anne Laplantine's delicate Care CD (recorded as Angelika Kohlermann while Michiko Kusaki was on holiday. cheeky); Rafael Toral's music-box/feedback experiments, Electric Babyland. Tom was among the first to catch Nick Zammuto's rising star and to take notice of the underrated Jon Sheffield. CFTPA, Xiu Xiu, Patrick Wolf, and Toral's curiously unrevealing Early Works are really the only Tom picks that do nothing for me.
