i'm interviewing him on thursday and this is your big chance to have your questions stolen and asked with any proper credit given!

ethan, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what, my questions arent good enough anymore?

jess, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i forgot to save the im.

ethan, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

cockfarmer.

jess, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ethan -- That's sweet that you're doing this, I imagine you have a lot in common w/ Herren (not that it matters, but you know, geography, the kind of music you like, etc.) Ask him about the Nuno Cannevero record, & how that inspired "Nuno." That's one thing I'm curious about, anyway. Also, I want to know whether any of his pre- IDM hip-hop productions are avaliable anywhere. Which labels did his sell tracks to?

Mark, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He comes across as a hip hop rooted guy with the IDM bit of his music being more coincidential than straight up influence-oriented. I would ask how he sees other hip hop deviant producers (Click Hop comp, Shadow, Krush, some of Ninja Tune) in relation to his own work, and whether he views himself as an individualistic auteur or as a more rooted branch of some larger music community.

Honda, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ask him if he smokes the ganj!

chaki, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ask him about Cash Money, yo.

turner, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ask him what's in his secret glitch-making kit. One assumes pro-tools, but anything else?

Dan I., Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would ask him for an appology for all the shite glitch-hop records that have come out as of late.

Michael Taylor, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i'm afraid i have to agree with Michael on this one. i did find the prefuse 73 album very disappointing (although the 12 wasn't that bad)

gareth, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ask him if he's interested in architecture, (the airport on the cover of that S+S ep) and how it relates to his music. I don't see the connection myself.
Apparently he drops the stylus onto the record to get that sound? Did it first happen by accident, and how is able to reproduce serendipitious effects in the studio.

K-reg, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ask him about mantronix dunno why

ask him about garage (uk) if hes heard any.

ambrose, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ask him if he's heard any good records lately.

dan, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ask him about the Nuno Cannevero record, & how that inspired "Nuno."

I think it should already be clear that that track was inspired by the guy from Extreme. Herren was highly influenced by Bettencourt's production for Baby Animals.

Nitsuh, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What does he look for in the flow of rappers he particularly likes to mix?

Does he prefer to listen to PE style production, beat-digging, g-funk? what does he think in particular of the production work of Murder Inc. for Ja Rule? Does he see any similarities between "Put It On Me" and what he's doing?

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1: first music he remembers hearing as a child
2: what he was playing (back) when he first realised he really had it; what was it about it?
3: if everything happens that he wants to, who would he STILL swap places with?
4: jay-z vs nas throwdown
5: most unacceptable - er scratch that
6: what's the stupidest thing anyone ever said to him?

mark s, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i still need questions! thanks to everyone who's contributed so far.

ethan, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ask him what does he think of those who buy his records/go to performances of his music? Without suggesting he make music w/a certain audience in mind, what kind of response to his albums would he most appreciate - is the I part of IDM not a good thing at all?

daria gray, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1. does he think the Just Blaze/Kanye West work on the recent Jay-Z and Beanie Sigel albums is a backwards move from Tim/Neptunes avant- funk futurism and is, as such, retro classicism, or that it is less self-consciously inventive and therefore more relaxed giving more space for Jay/Beanz et al to shine.

2. is he of the kid606 school of thought that IDM is too nerd filled and that it needs to get more 'jockist' beerz'n'girlz?

3. what does he think of the resurgance of New York Loft/Levan/Mancuso culture, and does he think that New Yorks house/club music scene is something that has been neglected in print until the recent eulogies

4. are house music and hip hop compatible, and what does he think of the consumption of e in the hip hop scene. does he take e?

5. does he think that white European and white/black British dance music is a bastardization of 'true' black American music?

6. what does he think of Moodymanns apparent distaste for white consumption of black musics?

gareth, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

bugger, is this too late Ethan?

gareth, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ask him if he thinks there's a place for "traditional" lyrical narratives within IDM/glitch.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

those questions are fantastic and no it is not too late because the interview has been postponed so it can be conducted in person. thanks!

ethan, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What moment changed your view of music forever?

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

In person! Then:
1: Will you run away with me?
2: Can I have yr babies?

mark s, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

three weeks pass...
well actually i would like to get in touch with scott myself. i am a HUGE fan of his work as savath and savalas, and delarosa and asora. i want more of his work, and am wondering how i can connect with him or find out more about his other projects...he is quite amazing.

best regards, alessandra

alessandra, Monday, 31 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ask him if Prefuse is "downtempo".

Josh, Monday, 31 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

twelve years pass...

there are loads of threads from this period about prefuse 73 but the last non-list/c&p mention of him on ilx is over a year ago

Little Saint Hugh of Lincoln (nakhchivan), Monday, 30 June 2014 12:52 (eleven years ago)

Well he hasn't dropped a record since 2011 and he hasn't dropped a good one since arguably 2003.

'arry Goldman (Hurting 2), Monday, 30 June 2014 13:54 (eleven years ago)

at least under that moniker

'arry Goldman (Hurting 2), Monday, 30 June 2014 13:54 (eleven years ago)

he did that record with Teebs as Sons of the Morning last year, but it pretty much sounded like a Teebs record. seems like a good time for a comeback though since he's been getting lots of props as an inspiration for the L.A. beat scene.
