crimes against rock

On another board, this guy Mub had a funny comment : "Other than Big Black and Naked Raygun, I just couldn't get into the Windy City's London obsession -- listen closely, and tell me they weren't yearning for jolly ol' England, Pegboy included. And, if you weren't previously aware, I believe that the fog-breathers have committed more crimes against rock 'n roll over the past 30 years than any other locale."

In another post, he had a good point by point Saints vs. Sex Pistols critique that I'd have to agree with (Saints win).

So I was wondering...
WHAT LOCALE DO *YOU* THINK CREATED THE MOST CRIMES AGAINST ROCK N' ROLL?

IS ALL CAPS THE BEST??

NUDE SPOCK, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Where is Creed from?

Kim, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Where is Creed from?

Florida, I think. Which is where the boybands came from, too, so I think we have a winner.

Prude, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Orange County, California. This one's a no-brainer.

Limp Bizkit are from Florida.

I'm starting to think Florida. Who's any good that's come from there?

I'm starting to think Florida. Who's any good that's come from there?

Here's who I know from Florida:
NSync
OTown
Gloria Estefan
Molly Hatchet
Jimmy Buffet
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Creed
Matchbox 20
Tom Petty
7 Mary 3
KC & the Sunshine Band
Sister Hazel

Not looking good for Florida. I'll give Tom Petty a "by" - He's never killed anyone. He does nothing for me, but he isn't offensive.

Dave225, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

not good on david225's list = tom petty

sister hazel and mary 7of9 i kno nothing of

mark s, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Florida's Saving Grace:

Ray Charles.

Gram Parsons was born in Florida, but wisely moved away.

Dave225, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm starting to think Florida. Who's any good that's come from there?

Miami Bass

gareth, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ray Charles!! finally something daveand i can agree on! gram parsons = toss

mark s, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Come on, we all know it's Ireland.

Thin Lizzy, U2, JJ72, Westlife, Boyzone, B*Witched, Bellefire, and if you think they're all shite you should hear the "local scene", split in two between shite REM/Pearl Jam hybrids and shite Blink 182/Ash hybrids. Oh I forgot the Cranberries.

Ronan, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ronan is correct. nowhere else stoops that low;)

gareth, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Vermont should be sprayed with lysol. Over and over again. I don't care if Phish didn't originate from there--just hit 'em and get that patchouli scent out of our beloved country.

Mickey Black Eyes, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Florida's not the worst by far. Some good indie bands have come out of there. And I object to the inclusion of KC & the Sunshine Band in that list.

Kerry, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Germany. Isn't David Hasselhoff popular there as well?

helen fordsdale, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i might be wrong, but doesn't Prefuse 73 come out of Miami?

Brock K, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i thought he was from Atlanta?

gareth, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Isn't Vanilla Ice from Florida as well? My vote rests with Orange County as well-- appalling stuff from down there, but have created some decent stoner rock in the last decade or so...

Andy, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thin Lizzy are good, they sound like Can

maryann, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mustn't forget Marilyn Manson, also from Florida....

M. Matos, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Marilyn Manson is from Canton, Ohio. Ohio is definitely not a scourge.

Dave225, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

got career started in Florida, it counts

M. Matos, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

schematic are from miami, scott herren (rpefuse 73) has released a fair bit on schematic. also from miami: chocolate industries, dj craze. not great but offensive.

ambrose, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ray charles is from georgia duh.

ethan, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

few more of Florida's saving graces: Home, Meringue, To Live And Shave in LA, Monotract, Screw Music Forever...

Ireland's saving grace: My Bloody Valentine.

gygax!, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

To say nothing of Florida's saving grace: its status as ground zero for death metal. Morbid Angel is from there. "Breathes there a man with soul so dead/who never to himself hath said/'Damn, that Trey Azagthoth plays a mean-ass death-metal solo?'" I thought not. Whatever city or municipality played host to Snake River Conspiracy's recorded massacre of "How Soon Is Now?" gets my vote. Even people who don't like the Smiths cry when they hear what those awful people did to that perfectly nice song. As Peter Hughes once memorably put it: "And I sure hate those people who like the Smiths/but I sure as fuck don't trust nobody who don't."

John Darnielle, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thin Lizzy are good, but Maryann is fuckin' tripping.

unknown or illegal user, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Skynyrd's from Florida, not to mention the whole Morbid Angel/Death/Obituary axis. New York has consistently commited the most high profile crimes against rock, due mostly to the cadre of chauvinistic rock mythologizers writing from there. Where else could Richard Hell have been taken seriously?

Kris, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mr. Darnielle, you have reminded me once again why I like you. Now when are you going to do that darn interview? ;-)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ethan:

Duh your fucking self. Ray Charles was born in Georgia and lived there for a whopping 3 months. Then his family moved to Florida.

Look it up.

Dave225, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Canada has much to answer for. Can we just call the whole country a "locale" and end the discussion?

dan, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

some current bands/people of note in ireland: joan of arse, the redneck manifesto, the last post, boa morte, the connect4orchestra, decal, the jimmy cake, large mound, paul o'reilly, steve fanagan, adrian crowley, goodtime john. most or all of that list have put out excellent records this year. go to www.thumped.com to see that there is a hell of a lot more to the place than you might think

dudley, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No you may not call Canada a locale.
Though if your refering to Newmarket, Ontario you may be bang on.

After learning our lessons with Neil Young and Joni Mitchell we've kept the best at home and only export crap like Mitsou, Bryan Adams and Celine to the rest of the world.

Mr Noodles, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Canada: Voivod, Cryptopsy, Gorguts, Nardwuar, the Forgotten Rebels, Rush, Shania, "I Am the Mountie" -- all kinds of good stuff.

Kris, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dont even get me started cause I could go on all night. Its been done recently here.
