Stars in their Eyes is perhaps one of the more popular cultural biopsies on UK television today. So my question to you is this: Who would you be? and why. On a personal note I think Tom Waits would be an interesting performance.

Billy MacKenzie, for two equally selfish reasons:

1. So that I could perform an even better version of "You Only Live Twice" than Billy sang on The Last Resort in 1985.

2. So that I could win.

Darius doing Britney would also be quite fun - stick on ponytail and all that...

Kraftwerk. So that I could be Kraftwerk. What more would you want from life?

Either that or I'd do a rendition of 4'33.

The Pinefox singing "Wallasey".

I'd love to perform as the The Orb, but I can't hack their music.

Maso Yamazaki! Of course I couldn't look as thin as he does, but I'd love to go crazy onstage screaming my lungs out, causing everyone there heart attacks. "Tonight, Matthew, I will perform my favourite MASONNA song: 'Eat Maggot'!"

Not my fave - just saying that for effect.

Madonna. Or Morrissey (easy, that one)

Or Ride so I can do my impression Rob Newman's impression of Mark Gardener.

Or Kate Bush.

I want to become famous, so that I can go on Stars In Their Eyes and pretend to be myself. *THAT* would just be the ultimate pop art statement on the nature of fame.

I've never seen anyone do hiphop.. so I'd be Eminem..

Britney Spears. So I could have a long bath afterwards...

>>> "The Pinefox singing "Wallasey"."

Doc, this is one of the most bizarre things you've ever posted. That song had potential once, mind. But I can't even remember what time- signature it was in now.

6/8? 4/4? 7/4? Try it in a few different ones and see what fits? Ever heard those Beatles Anthology tracks where they do "I'll Be Back" in 3/4 followed immediately by a take in 4/4? That's what you should do with Wallasey.

Dr. C, Saturday, 8 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Seriously, is there any way that I could get to hear some of your material, Pinefox?

Dr. C, Saturday, 8 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I know someone who used to work on this show - "no gender-bending, no blacking/whiting-up", them's the rules. Rather nixed my attempt to be Missy Elliot. At the time they were crying out for a good Scott Walker (did they ever get one?); now, I'd obviously be a profoundly *bad* Scott Walker, but it was the song restrictions ("The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" and nothing else) that really put me off. What you could do with "Plastic Palace People", "Dealer", "The Electrician"...

Dr. C: some of it is 'commercially available'. Much of it is not.

Pinefox: is this an opportunity to put our heads together and deliver a Greatest Hits CD-R to the good doctor?

Michael Jones, Saturday, 8 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Which of the Pinefox canon is commercially available? I might even buy something! A CD-R would be splendid too.
