Waddayathink?

John Cocktolstoy, Friday, 10 September 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Darkchild?!? What were they thinking?

Rich (Rich), Friday, 10 September 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

interesting how minimal - wish it were a bit warmer, though. too "milkshake"-y for DC. whats this from? soundtrack?

peter smith (plsmith), Friday, 10 September 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a "normal" single I think. Found an mp3 link too:
http://www.the-ladies.com/destiny/dc-losemybreath-official.mp3

I must say I think it's excellent, then again I could be Darkchild's prison bitch anyday.

John Cocktolstoy, Friday, 10 September 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

NEW ALBUM FROM DESTINY'S CHILD "DESTINY FULFILLED" IN STORES NOVEMBER 16, 2004!
Brand new single "Lose My Breath"

(from their site)

ok, I'll stop now

John Cocktolstoy, Friday, 10 September 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

not bad.. its a good first single. im sure the bigger hits will come down the line.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Friday, 10 September 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

omg!!!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Like it.

Wooden (Wooden), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

HOORAY HOORAY HOORAY!!!!!!

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

HOT.

That is some straight-up Southern marching band shit, I love it.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

oh god this is garbage. one of the only times I've ever heard a DJ diss a record right after premiering it. it's as shrill as unpleasant as "Survivor" except even more offensive because it's trying to pass itself off as fun.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently the next r&b trend = paradiddle-diddles.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

OTM Al, especially with the "Survivor" connection. A total mess.

Rich (Rich), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha, Al you sound like you don't like the record BECAUSE the DJ dissed it!

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

This blows! It sounds like a halftime show!

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i love survivor...

peter smith (plsmith), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

yes. DJs are right, ILM is wrong. this is a universal rule, I find.

(x-post)

Al (sitcom), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate "Survivor" and find this new one to be great.

This blows! It sounds like a halftime show!

DOES NOT COMPUTE. Every song should sound like a halftime show.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

It sounds like a halftime show!

Nah, it sounds like a parade down South with kids playing the shit out of the drums, trying to blow down the band from the school across town.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

This is the perfect song to compliment the good mood that I'm in as a result of hearing that Hot 8 mp3.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Every song should sound like a halftime show.

Dude, fuck that. ELVIS PRESTO, I tell you.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

you guys do know that this song was officially premiered at the NFL kickoff event yesterday, right?

Al (sitcom), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

the drums are mad fun, agreed, but i wish it were a bit more, er, melodious.

< / geir >

Dave M. (rotten03), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe it's secretly a remake of "Tusk."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

DUNG-SCENTED PABULUM MANUFACTURED BY EVIL REPLICANTS!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

haha

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I wouldn't call it a mess but I would say it's the most unambitious single of the year (no small feat when "Goodies" is the reigning No. 1). God I hate it when artists don't put their best foot forward with the lead single.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I say this in a totally respectful and heartfelt way: Someone, anyone, needs to publish a collection of Alex in NYC's greatest epithets and insults, and title it "DUNG-SCENTED PABULUM MANUFACTURED BY EVIL REPLICANTS!"

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

You know, the first two things that leapt to MY mind when comparing this song to the rest of the pop/R&B landscape were "unambitious" and "unmelodic".

Seriously, are you people listening to the same song?

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

actually on listen #3 i am now in love.

Dave M. (rotten03), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow. Methinks it's rhythmically exciting and filled with a certain restraint of attitude, almost the total opposite of that shrill "Survivor" garbage. It might be my fave single of theirs since Ind't Women....if not Bug-a-Boo! A tight, efficient song - maybe not burning the world down Crazy in Love like, but hot all the same

Vic (Vic), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

a return to bugaboo! fantastic

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i do not hold high hopes for this as soon as i get to hear it.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

This is the PERFECT way to start off this weekend. God i love friday afternoon anthems.
i thank you dearly for the link John Cocktolstoy.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

This song is brilliant! Tight and controlled.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

does anyone else like "survivor"?

peter smith (plsmith), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

no.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

does this actually include the words "never give yourself to a man in adolescence" ?

nice.

Vic (Vic), Friday, 10 September 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

haha omg

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 10 September 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

You movin' so slow like just don't have a clue
Didn't Mama teach you to give affection
Know the difference from a man and an adolescent

ow grammar (Dan Perry), Friday, 10 September 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

(And that difference is...)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 September 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

10 to 20 up north

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 10 September 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i guess my interpretation was more fantasy-fulfillment, since the thought of an adolescent beyonce in a catholic schoolgirl uniform, britney-like, giving herself to various men in the video while she's singing that line, would be kind of interesting. but thanks anyway dan.

Vic (Vic), Friday, 10 September 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

regardless this song can be immeasurably helped or hurt by the quality of the video...as good as it, it's one of "those" type of singles i think. let's hope it's more than a marching band.

Vic (Vic), Friday, 10 September 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I predict hotpants.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Friday, 10 September 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

It worked for 'The Jump-Off'.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 10 September 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

that's a suckers bet

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 10 September 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

(haha, I meant the marching band, but hot pants works too)

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 10 September 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

You're all fucking mentalists, this is great.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 10 September 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha Matt DC makes the harsh aggro posts so I don't have to!

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Friday, 10 September 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, I just saw the tail-end of the video for "Soldier".

1) I APOLOGIZE FOR MAKING FUN OF YOUR VOICE, MICHELLE!
2) ALL THREE OF YOU PLZ COME HOLLA AT ME OK THX (my wife will understand)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 13 November 2004 20:05 (twenty years ago)

You are so easily swayed (but why not?).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 13 November 2004 20:19 (twenty years ago)

I like this song. They're gonna put someone's eye out with those hips.

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 13 November 2004 20:21 (twenty years ago)

I hate Destiny's Child; I love this song. Maybe fun is the wrong word, but it's propulsive and exciting.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Saturday, 13 November 2004 20:23 (twenty years ago)

just heard "soldier" on the radio.
sounds like a crunk influence on the vocal line, though not the voices.
anyone else hear this?

m0stly clean (m0stly clean), Sunday, 14 November 2004 03:18 (twenty years ago)

this is ace!

i really appreciate the sentiment in the song, also how it could be about dancing or sex.

"didn't your mama teach you to give affection" is a great line.

amateur!!st, Thursday, 18 November 2004 23:45 (twenty years ago)

Jesus, Deborah Norville is interviewing them right now on MSNBC. There's a real meeting of the fuckin' minds. Humility not really their strong suit, apparently.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 27 November 2004 07:26 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
"Soldier" !!

It's on like every half an hour on the hip hop station in Knoxville. I absolutely cannot help singing along with the chorus every time it comes on which I realize makes me look more than faintly ridiculous. I totally didn't even realize it was Destiny's Child, I was like "who the hell are these hot singers that Cash Money has hooked up with??" The lushness of the harmonies works so well with the casio beats, it's awesome.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 20:03 (twenty years ago)

OTM OTM OTM OTM OTM OTM OTM OTM OTM OTM OTM OTM OTM OTM

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 20:25 (twenty years ago)

oh man, Soldier gets me so stoked :( I just wish I were street enough for B!!!! B(

CROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW (Adrian Langston), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 20:39 (twenty years ago)

By far the best thing about that song is the lil wayne bit where he says "... she salu'!"

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 31 December 2004 02:46 (twenty years ago)

Thank you, Tracer!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 31 December 2004 02:49 (twenty years ago)

It definitely gives the lie to the claim that "Lose My Breath" was the only good new song of theirs.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 31 December 2004 02:56 (twenty years ago)

Tracer is OTM about the sing-a-longability, I was listening to this when I was grocery shopping and I had to try really hard not to sing out loud.

C0L1N B---ETT, Friday, 31 December 2004 03:12 (twenty years ago)

Forksclov I reeeally like that part too

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Friday, 31 December 2004 17:45 (twenty years ago)

and croooow, i do too :(

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Friday, 31 December 2004 17:46 (twenty years ago)

Why have I not heard this yet?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 31 December 2004 17:47 (twenty years ago)

You ain't thug, playa.

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Friday, 31 December 2004 19:22 (twenty years ago)

I really feel like some mid-1980s white man railing against ebonics, but do the lyrics of "Soldier" really grate on anyone else? I could have sworn that Destiny's Child members were carefully screened and home-schooled by Beyonce's parents, but the grammar on this song kills me! Would it kill them to say "he's" instead of "he?" It sounds forced, to me.

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 3 January 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

I really feel like some mid-1980s white man railing against ebonics, but do the lyrics of "Soldier" really grate on anyone else?

This is because your status ain't hood.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 January 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

I really feel like some mid-1980s white man railing against ebonics, but do the lyrics of "Soldier" really grate on anyone else?

Guilty as charged.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 3 January 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

"I love how he's keep my body screamin'"

WHITE GRAMMAR, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! GIVE IT A BIG HAND!

The Deeply Sarcastic Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 January 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking more of the "he talkin right" and "he the type" lines instead of a song-wide search and replace, but sure. The song would lose the tone if it was all gramatically correct, but the message I'm getting here is that Destiny's Child can do a song about street credibility by tossing out some token references to 'lacs and changing up their diction. I guess it's a theme song more than anything.

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 3 January 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

I guess it's a theme song more than anything.

DING DING DING DING

Also, DC can sell any theme because they always put on the nicest hotpants in their videos. (Actually I have no idea if I'm kidding with that or not.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 January 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

So, in other words, they're being utter, disengenuous posers, but it's okay because they look good in hotpants in the video?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 3 January 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

Yes.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 January 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

Side note: the "psoer" thing is a gigantic feeble-minded red herring.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 January 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

They can read minds too?

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Monday, 3 January 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

And astrally project!

Leon the Fratboy (Ex Leon), Monday, 3 January 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

Who cares if the harmonies are ultra-tight and they can sing their asses off? THEY AREN'T REALLY HOODRATS STONE THEM STONE THEM ALL (because you see songs aren't ever about roleplaying or telling a story, they are all literal renditions of truthful events; when the Beatles sang "I am the walrus" you could see the flippers manifesting themselves on wax).

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 January 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

My thoughts on the matter:

1. They don't usually speak in that way, it's a thematic thing for the song.
2. Theme be damned, this sounds really stilted. All the "he be" lines I bitched about are from Michelle. Didn't she put out a gospel album? Listening again, this is making me feel really uncomfortable.
3. There are two different versions of the song. The real one with T.I. and Lil Wayne makes me feel a little better. The pop radio one with their verses excised completely loses the plot.
4. I'll continue to listen to the song, and make a funny face during the parts that make me feel queasy.

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 3 January 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

The pop radio one with their verses excised completely loses the plot.

I couldn't agree with this more.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 January 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

Seriously, Michelle's verse totally owns on this song. She's the one who sounds most grubby.

I really don't think they're pretending to be hoodrats at all, they're rich girls slumming it.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 3 January 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

NO NO NO THEY ARE TRYING TO BE HOODRATS BECAUSE I SAID SO!

The Overly-Irritable Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 January 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

What's going on now?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 January 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

1. People said they didn't like "Soldier" using a reason I thought was lame.
2. I got unreasonably testy.
3. HILARITY ENSUES!
4. I end up on ignore lists even though ILM doesn't have that feature.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 January 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

(see also the "Groove Is In The Heart" thread; today is "Dan is all patriarchal and disapproving towards ILM posters" day (aka "Monday"))

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 January 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

I am and know many black people who find the lyrics to "Soldier" to be disturbing. My mom hates it with a passion, it's not allowed to be played in our house or her car. I agree with the comment made above, they *do* come off as rich girls slumming it up. The video is gross too, the whole idea of the song is just wrong.

kevin says relax (daddy warbuxx), Monday, 3 January 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

Kevin, I don't mean to dismiss or diminish anything you've written but I have to admit that the juxtaposition of your post with your email address his giving me a gigantic giggle fit.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 January 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

Just because I thought the lyrics were obnoxious doesn't mean I dislike the song. Anyway, they are obviously trying to be COUNTRY GIRLS and not HOOD RATS. It's like you didn't even listen to the song, Dan.

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 3 January 2005 23:36 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha awesome!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 January 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)

(We do know what hood rat means, yes? Also we see the gigantic strawman I've been kicking throughout this entire thread to the amusement of apparently me and no one else?)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 January 2005 23:46 (twenty years ago)

We do know what hood rat means, yes?

Yeah, I was going to say something about how they might be aspiring to be shawtys, but I'm getting really mixed messages about the country slang getting up in their east coast thing.

mike h. (mike h.), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

It still gives me the shivers it's weird. There's something sad about it. Like what do they think's going to happen once they get their scarred-up soldier? God this guy could be everything, keep me safe, up my status, change my life.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 10 January 2005 07:26 (twenty years ago)

I agree that it's stupid for Beyonce to front like she wants a soldier when her boyfriend is doing guest spots with Linkin' Fuckin' Park, but IT'S A SONG. It's a fantasy. I just can't rail against music for its content and intention unless it calls for the death of a race... and if it's got a good beat? Weeeeelll....

In any case, this flared and burned on me after fifteen or so listens. It's no "Lose My Breath". Furthermore, I think Michelle's verse is BY FAR the weakest and without Lil' Wayne's "salu'!" this loses my interest.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 10 January 2005 07:40 (twenty years ago)

Kelly lighting up on the bed, a bare mattress in a 4th-floor walkup. He turns over, already snoring. She inhales and looks out the window at the rooftops of the BK and her glance falls onto "The Ragged Way People Fall Out of Love" by Susan Sontag. Her head whips around in horrified disbelief, she leaps out of bed, stubbing the cigarette out and starts to put on her clothes, muttering to herself. "Motherfucker said he was street!!" She goes and calls Da Brat to talk about it.

xpost Michelle's verse is phenomenal!! She's got this intuition for exactly how much she's got him in the palm of her hand, and how much more she has to get.. the soldier doesn't quite know how the night's going to turn out but she does.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 10 January 2005 07:43 (twenty years ago)

That might be the subtext; but man, the sound just doesn't do it for me.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 10 January 2005 07:46 (twenty years ago)

This song just gets better every time I hear it. actually what cracks me up is the end of Kelly's verse.. 'with street cred-i-bil-i-ty..'

daria g (daria g), Monday, 10 January 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

I love how Beyonce doesn't get the great lines of the songs anymore. Actually, the last great line I remember Beyonce getting was "So what?/You bought a pair of shoes?" from "Bugaboo".

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 10 January 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
It's on like every half an hour on the hip hop station in Knoxville.

And it still is!

Best bits of this song:
final chorus when the "better be street if you're looking at me" is suddenly lushhhhhhly harmonised
michelle talking about chiefing weed omg
self-pluralization ("so quick to snatch up your Beyonces")
the synthy WHOMP sound juxtaposed with the jittery casio beat
sa-LOOOT!
