All I can think of so far is XZibit's "Paparazzi" which lifts from Faure's "Pavane".
HELP! and if possible, leave the name of the classical track being lifted.

Symplistic (shmuel), Saturday, 11 September 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Not really a song, but the Dr. Octagon interlude "I've Got to Tell You" samples Pachelbel's Canon.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Saturday, 11 September 2004 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I should really know what the Nas sample is from and am embarrassed that I couldn't tell you... it's Mozart, yes?

I'm probably pushing my luck with Neneh Cherry's "Somedays" - early Geoff Barrows production using a Mozart sample.

Strangely enough now I'm stuck.

Does sampling Orff's "Carmina Burana" count? Does Puff P. Diddy Pee Doodie Daddy doing it count?

Automator grew up playing violin (as did Damon Albarn, which is how they bonded in Gorillaz) so that's why he's so keen to use classical samples.

Canibus' "Rip the Jacker" LP has several tracks which sample classical music (alongside those which sample Arabic, Latin American and folk music). Unfortunately the sources aren't listed on the sleeve, and my knowledge of classical music is too limited to recognize the compositions (they're definitely more obscure than "Für Elise"). You should check out "Genabis", "Psych Evaluation" and "Cemantics", at the least. "Genabis" is a particularly good one, it has a killer choir sample which fits nicely with Canibus' biblical lyrics.

I think "D. Original" on Jeru's Sun Rises In the East uses a little bit of piano from a Stockhausen recording.

arch Ibog (arch Ibog), Sunday, 12 September 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Missy's "All N My Grill" and "Dangerous Mouths." Don't know the source of either.

There was this "Everything's Gonna Be Alright" thing sampling Bach's "Air". Was it Soapbox or something that they were called?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 13 September 2004 07:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Sinclair & Wilde - When She's Gone (Brahms' Symphony No. 3, 3rd movement)

George W. Handel, Friday, 17 September 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

no one mentioned Wu yet?
Ghostface's "The Soul Controller" samples Bach's Brandenberg concerto.
Meth's "Tical" samples Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition."

BbetaA, Saturday, 18 September 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

and then there's the Coup song off Genocide and Juice, where the skit involving a string quartet becomes the song. not sure what piece it samples though...

BbetaA, Saturday, 18 September 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

The Streets - Same Old Thing isn't really hip-hop, but similar, and it also samples Dvorak's 9th
