mouse on mars

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 12 September 2004 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

you've got them, oddly, in totally perfect order.

Laptops

That's such an ILM answer.

David Allen (David Allen), Sunday, 12 September 2004 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

moot point _ already got my tix for the MoM/junior boys.

william (william), Sunday, 12 September 2004 03:05 (twenty-one years ago)

depends what youa re in the mood for.

i'd go for Mouse on Mars

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Sunday, 12 September 2004 03:56 (twenty-one years ago)

it's so ilm to answer a question honestly!

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 12 September 2004 05:02 (twenty-one years ago)

No, no, I don't think you guys understand -- MoM, Ratatat and Jr. Boys are all playing on the same bill. ...Trail of Dead is presumably on another bill.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 12 September 2004 06:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Go see Ratatat. Is this the show at Bowery? Do see them though. Trail of dead is pretty fucking lame.

danh (danh), Sunday, 12 September 2004 06:34 (twenty-one years ago)

..and you will know us by the trail of dead

If you like to see sexism at work (not only on stage but also in the public), go to the Trail.

jesus nathalie (nathalie), Sunday, 12 September 2004 06:59 (twenty-one years ago)

in San Fran we unfortunately have to stomach seeing Ratatat if we we want to hear Junior Boys. Ecchhhh. Why couldn't we have Solvent instead???

cs appleby (cs appleby), Sunday, 12 September 2004 08:59 (twenty-one years ago)

both shows are in toronto.
and yes mouse on mars, ratatat and jr boys are all on the same bill

astroblaster (astroblaster), Sunday, 12 September 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Mouse On Mars 100%
Junior Boys is a nice bonus, go & see if the hype is justified.

(qualifier: haven't got the new record yet, should be delivered tomorrow. But the answer would be the same based on their past stuff).

(O/T anyone can link me up to an .mp3 of the JB's music to check out?)

vaugeness (grumpy_bastard), Sunday, 12 September 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

(that's MoM's past stuff, I mean)

grumpy bastard (grumpy_bastard), Sunday, 12 September 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

obviously I need to change that in settings... trying to not be so grumpy :)

grumpy bastard (grumpy_bastard), Sunday, 12 September 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Can you expand on this?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

...and you will know us by the trail of dead was really fun live when i saw them.

Yeah, me too. They'd finished and had done their whole rebellious "ooh, look, we're going to trash our instruments" bit, which consisted of kicking over a couple of drums and throwing a guitar in the general direction of a Marshall stack. Somebody in the audience thought they hadn't gone far enough, got up on stage and pushed the stack over, then threw a spare drum into another one which knocked it over as well.

The band came back on and tried to make out they were tough. The audience were split between the 10% that were trying to stop the bouncers laying into the stage invader (...etc being so tough they were inciting the bouncers to beat the guy up) and the 90% that were pissing themselves laughing at watching someone's fake cool so effectively shattered.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

What are MoM like live? Is it all laptops? Any live instruments or gimmickry?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw them open for stereolab once but it was a really long time ago and all i remember is a ribcage-shaking WHUMPWHUMPWHUMP

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, ratatat kinda blow live. they just rock posture quite a lot when all they're really doing is playing power chords and having the laptop do all the fun stuff. When you don't have to see it (ie from another room/the bar/listening to the lp) it's much more interesting.

One of the dudes is in some emo band, right?

This hardly seems like a logical reason to not like them, though.

lemin (lemin), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

What are MoM like live? Is it all laptops? Any live instruments or gimmickry?

When I saw them it was Jan on keyboards/computers, Andi on bass, Dodi on drums/vox. Very fun show, upbeat & danceable.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

This hardly seems like a logical reason to not like them, though.

Agreed, but I assumed that's why some people don't.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, MoM live was almost a totally different sound than on record - they could have been a DFA band in that guise.

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Awesome, that's what I was hoping for (not DFA necessarily, but something different).

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

This confused me:

"they just rock posture quite a lot when all they're really doing is playing power chords"

Aren't these things one and the same?

Anyway, the beats hit a lot harder live and sound much more aggressive. I prefer it to the record I think.

danh (danh), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

well, with only two of them, and only one who's playing guitar, the only way i'd say that rock posturing is okay is if the guy is actually playing the interesting stuff. It was like having an mc talking alot of shit and then only singing the chorus of his song playing in the background- extremely underwhelming.

lemin (lemin), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

WOWOWOWOWOW!!

Saw MoM last night in Detroit, and they were amazing! This was my third time seeing them, and the previous two were good but not great. This was better. More "live" playing, with Jan having a fieldday with Dodo's vocals. The three of them have gelled into quite the funk trio. I kept thinking about a hyperer Zapp. Great reworkings of their tunes, with "Send Me Shivers" an obvious highlight. Very dynamic. Very celebratory. "Very fun show, upbeat & danceable", indeed.

Ratatat reminded me of Trans Am, but their stuff seemed to wear thin sooner. My friend enjoyed it more (probably because he's a guitarist) and he suggested that despite all the posturing, he felt that they had a lot of fun (in a mock-metal way).

Junior Boys weren't very dynamic, but their set was carried by their songs. I had read much about them, but had not heard them until they played. They had a small audience (they played first), but were likeable in a very understated way. Completely opposite from Ratatat in approach. I liked them alot.

peepee (peepee), Friday, 24 September 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

More "live" playing

What were they playing?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 24 September 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The drums seemed more of the mix than before. Andi played bass on all of the songs, whereas in the previous shows, he'd be in front of a box or two for a third of the set. (great effects on the bass, btw!) Jan seemd more "active" with the gizmos, less point and click.
More interaction with the rest of the band. More vocal trickery.

peepee (peepee), Friday, 24 September 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually made it to the show, and it was great! Unfortunately, I had to wait for a friend to get off of work so I missed the Junior Boys (and Ratatatatatat), but I bought a JB cd for my friend to make up for it (and so I could have the b-sides).

I did see a band called Macha, who played both kinds of indie - vibraphone-led instrumentals AND indie-dance (I kid, they were pretty good really), and MoM. MoM killed it, but it was really all about that drummer/singer guy. He just lays into those beats right along with the sequences, no headphones or anything.

Of course, it wouldn't be an electronic show if some computer file or connection didn't get fucked up and stop a song or two, but I love seeing that shit anyway.

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 25 September 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Any one else see MoM et al???????

Might be a little late but care to elaborate?

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 4 October 2004 04:43 (twenty-one years ago)

...having caught this tour in vancity last night,i have a few comments.junior boys only got to play 4 songs as they were given just 30mins. as the openers.too bad,as they are the reason i was there. ratatat just flat out suck! way to much wankery, not any interaction at all with the audience. the time they got would have served the junior boys better.

...mouse on mars:: having seen them some time ago opening for stereolab , i assumed i knew what i was about to hear.

william (william), Monday, 4 October 2004 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

....hmmmm,rest of that was cut off.
...mouse on mars:: having seen them some time ago opening for stereolab , i assumed i knew what i was about to hear. wrong. andi and jan still seem to enjoy playing live, although i miss the interaction of them reaching over the board across each other. dancing their herky dance, and just having a good time.
Dodo Nkishi seems to be the focal point now in this incarnation of MoM,but all three still seem to be enjoying themselves. as a bass/drums-vocals/electronics group, they are harder rocking, and just as enjoyable as before. great show.

william (william), Monday, 4 October 2004 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
I had fun at the show, although I really wish the Logan Square Auditorium had better sound. There were times when both the Junior Boys and Mouse on Mars sounded muffled, or just not as crisp as they could have been. (Oddly enough, Ratatat sounded fine.)

At one point, the Junior Boys' singer (Jeremy) chastised the audience for not dancing enough, although I'm not sure all of their songs call for it. But I wanted to support the band so badly, since the crowd was still fairly small at that point, and clearly few people knew who they were, that I moved to the front and joined a crowd of dorky kids waving light sticks and moving about.

I approached Jeremy after the set to tell him how much I liked the band. He told me, upon request, that the two new songs they played will be on a new album coming out "within the next year." I also mentioned that I heard of them via ILX -- I wouldn't have said anything except for Ned commenting that J. was "very aware" of this board -- and J. turned to his friend and said, "Have you heard about this? There's this message board called I Love Music, and almost every city we go to, someone comes up to me and tells me that's how they heard about us." The other guy: "Sounds dangerous."

Junior Boys set: New Song 1, "Teach Me How to Fight," "High Come Down," New Song 2, "Under the Sun," "Birthday."

Ratatat was okay. Not as bad as I'd been led to believe, but nothing remarkable at all. N/A said they sorta sounded like Trans Am, which I can see.

Mouse on Mars was pretty cool, but also a little disappointing, because I'd seen them a couple months before at an outdoor block party, where the sound was better, the crowd way more energetic, and the Chicago skyline at night in the distance. I totally let loose during the more drum-n-bass numbers (my favorite album of theirs is still Autoditacker), but I'm so out of shape I couldn't keep up through the entire set. I left the show feeling physically drained.

I probably hyped this show too much in my mind, but I still had a pretty good time.

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 30 October 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Ratatat roolz, Junior Boys droolz.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 30 October 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously, is Trans Am similar to this in the guitar and keyboard sounds? The Ratatat album has me hooked but I can totally see why someone wouldn't care for them.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 30 October 2004 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

To be honest, I haven't heard *that* much Trans Am, but based on the songs I *have* heard -- I think the idea is heavy rock drumming with cheesy keyboard or liquid guitar lines.

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 30 October 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

And it's not like I don't like that idea, I just wasn't grabbed by the songs (in Ratatat's case).

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 30 October 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Junior Boys were great again in New York - love the new songs.
probably slightly preferred L.A. though because of more casual stage banter/presence and Knitting Factory West vibe/stage/sound fit better.

I warmed more to Mouse On Mars this time, mostly cos there's 2 songs I really like - which featured both times.

caught part of Ratatat, who seemed fine though not amazing - but totally resonated with my late 70's Junior High / High School years.

Paul (scifisoul), Saturday, 30 October 2004 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

trans am and ratatat are very similar. trans am have a live drummer and guitar is more simplistic monotous like then rats joes satriani approach. the bassist trades off on moog synth and trams am uses vocals much more prominetly. that said they are a kinda hard rock electronics hybrid like rat so you might like them.

twelve, Saturday, 30 October 2004 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, that's interesting, I thought of Joe Satriani too!

I'll try downloading some Trans Am.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 30 October 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

God help me, I'm downloading Joe Satriani tracks.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 30 October 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

trans am have much more of motorik vibe than ratatat ergo they are better

that said i haven't listened to trans am in years and now i really want to

jake b. (cerybut), Saturday, 30 October 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i meant to say not very simlar but anyways you get the point.
