Kittie: Classic, Dud, or Simply Comedy?

Can someone please explain Kittie to me? I suppose I shouldn't bash them too much -- they at least make no attempts at co-opting some sort've half-assed hip-hop into their indefensibly dreadful din. Their hearts might be in the right place, but I can't help but crack up when I hear their histrionic gobbledeegook (sounding more like big, furry Muppet monsters than anything akin to the sonorous voice of doom they seem to be grasping for). I'm not trying to get into the "chicks shouldn't try to rock" debate, because I think that's a complete load of crap. But really....Kittie are a good deal more silly than scary. What say you?

I say, I find it a bit odd that they tossed off their most attractive group member and are now a power trio (!?!?!). And if you're expecting something fierce from the women in the rock world, I suggest attaching your horse to something like Drain STH. Or Vixen, obviously.

"Kittie are a good deal more silly than scary"

fair enough, but what metal bands are scary? even when their burning down norwegian churches or digging up graves it's not scary, its silly. If Kittie are 'simply comedy' then surely all heavy metal bands are the same, personally i think kittie do what they do well, tho' to be honest i can't remember how a single one of their songs goes! anyway, they give 14 year old kerrang readers something to stick up on their walls......ok 14 year old kerrang readers and me.....

My brother and I were having fits of laughter at MTVX when a Kittie video came on. We both missed the beginning of the song and had no idea who the band was, and weren't even watching the TV, but when it got to the chorus and the lead vocalist started doing her Satan growl, we both fell out. "This MUST be Kittie!" we said, turning towards each other and howling.

Mr Revelator is exactly right; what makes the Kittie growl any less silly than the Cannibal Corpse growl or the Slipknot growl? All the Kittie songs I've heard have pretty unique rhythmic flourishes; it's like death metal slowed down to jr. high garage band speed. I think it's pretty neat, actually, they remind me of early Hole except competent. Except when they start rapping, that stuff is truly dire.

I saw a Kittie lunchbox where the four of them are hunched over the corpse of some sort of once-ferocious beast. Their chins are drenched in blood. Silly? Scary? When you say silly do you mean the overblown theatrical element or the novelty-act aspect (or both)?

That video where the man is picking up coins is boring. I like the bass player visually though.

Part of the Kittie Komedy Faktor is inherent in that particular genre of metal as far as I'm concerned. I have yet to hear anyone do a Satan growl vocal and not sound hilarious.

Fair points, Dan & Kris -- *ANY*one making the scary demonic growl voice -- be they male or female -- is a worthy target of ridicule, but for some reason, it just sounds more far-fetched (to me, anyway) coming out of the mouth of a teenage girl dressed like a Marilyn Manson groupie.

An ex-boyfriend of mine once said "If Kittie can make it we(we not including myself) can too". Sadly it might be true. They are silly.

Kittie a few more years down the indie road of hardened knockers would have been possibly GRATE. But they are just commical right now right down to the Pink Floyd cover on the new album.
