I have a short business trip to sydney and having been starved of any clubs or gigs in singapore am keen to go hear some music.

Anybody good or interesting playing on those dates?

Quite curious about this heavy silicon thing, actually - is there any of that?

tuesday night at the bondi hotel, bondi beach, (big pinkish pub on main drag of bondi) they have this thing called peanut butter jam...it's free to get in and cheap VB beers...basically it's 3-5 bands or singer-songwriters a night..always a mixed bag but often get some gems there..and it's free...not bad for a tuesday.....

Jacob - shameless plug, but I'm playing on Tuesday night 14th at the Hopetoun Hotel in Surry Hills opening for Betchadupa which is the band housing Neil Finn's son, Liam. We're the Fragments. Come early. Cheers.

Jacob, Heavy Silicon is a Melb and maybe also a Canberra thing. Sydney's more into 8-bit Devilfunk and stuff.

Some good Sydney clubs: Club 77, Candy's Appartment. You can googole them up and see what's happening when you're here.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Sunday, 12 September 2004 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

col: there was a mention of that Dangar! Dangar! 8-bit devilfunk cd-r on blissblog or one of those other trendy blogs.

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 12 September 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

...you watch them all go r 'n' b as soon as they smell some money. Devilfunk my arse.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Sunday, 12 September 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

see what's happening when you're here.

col, er, its the 13th TODAY. also that comp is grebt. future of music etc etc

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 12 September 2004 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

oh.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Sunday, 12 September 2004 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I haven't heard that comp, any chance of a copy?

As for Heavy Silicon, if you ask me the whole scene was built out of one fluke hit single (Metal Pr0n's 'Catholic Robot'). If you ask me, Metal Pr0n was the only ever Heavy Silicon band. The rest are just imitating that sound.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Sunday, 12 September 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

aren't you ON Dangar! Dangar! Col?????????

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 12 September 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

8-bit Devilfunk is the best genre name I've ever heard.

Hayden (Pow, Pow, Pow) (haitch), Sunday, 12 September 2004 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't know much about heavy sil col. to tell the truth when mark from s*n*ethesia started talking it up i lost interest. that said the Fang Doubt track from early last year was well bolshy!

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 12 September 2004 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

aren't you ON Dangar! Dangar! Col?????????

Someone's pointed out to me that The Free Riders are another pretty good heavy sil act. They're from Canberra.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 13 September 2004 00:26 (twenty-one years ago)

They had that song Davros Has the Floor (Kontrollerball)

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 13 September 2004 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never heard that particular Free Riders track but judging from the kind of kids who like them they're more like proto 8-bit than heavy silicon.

bulbs (bulbs), Monday, 13 September 2004 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

like = likely, sorry.

bulbs (bulbs), Monday, 13 September 2004 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Yesw, I mean everything about some of these so-called heavy sil acts are not true heavy sil but a sorta proto 8-bit devilfunk hybrid. I suppose you could call it heavy devilfunk or silicon 8-bit or something, but it ain't the original rockier style that's for sure. Owes a lot more to whiteknuckle, or at least a whiteknuckle/electro hybrid. But I'm skeptical about this need to create new genre names myself, I can see it's useful at times but I would never rack my head to think of a new genre name, I can't understand that. It's all music to me.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 13 September 2004 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

judging from your propensity to turn up on everything from neo electro to scabrok to remixing atrocious brisvegas bareknuckle shit (they can't have paid you much for that fucking "laffathon" mix col!) i can well believe that.

gaz (gaz), Monday, 13 September 2004 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha! Well I gotta be honest with you, I like the bareknuckle stuff more than the whiteknuckle, I don't know why, it's just more dumb and heavy I s'pose. You have to liver in Surfers Paradise for a while to understand that stuff. Laffathon sorta entertained me for the weekend then I took their track home (Sufferer's Paradise) and remixed it. Were they happy? I don't know. They said it was 'pure shit', but this is a compliment in Queensland. Cannot work those boys out.

I am the remix whore, I turn nothing down. What's wrong with a bit of scarok anyway? Have you heard Scabies - Twist Ya Nerves? That's good scabrok IMHO.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 13 September 2004 01:49 (twenty-one years ago)

well, if jacob's after that kind of thing look for the following names:

Felching scrubber upskirt sniffer dachshund

Rod Stewart edible colon catheter

Sydney approximations of the brissy bareknuckle sound (i know, i know!)

gaz (gaz), Monday, 13 September 2004 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

This whole furore over heavy silicon in the Oz music press reminds me of a similar whirlwind of attention that developed around the Epping breakbeat scene about six years ago, remember? Everywhere you looked it was 'Epping breakbeat, the next big thing' etc etc. But where are The Pilfernators and Brothel Owner now eh? Probably spend those half mill advances on new computer games and skateboard trucks.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 13 September 2004 03:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I believe they have their own website now and are releasing dreamy hiphop in collaboration with Black Americans.

Sami Jheryylkanyga, Monday, 13 September 2004 04:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Ubin rox u r all gaye

bulbs (bulbs), Monday, 13 September 2004 04:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Ubin of course came out of the Epping breakbeat scene, but quickly abandoned their roots to pioneer microvocal house.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 13 September 2004 04:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i picture jacob scratching his head at this point

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Monday, 13 September 2004 04:13 (twenty-one years ago)

the vocals provided by dwarves from the nearby North Ryde Institute

gaz (gaz), Monday, 13 September 2004 04:20 (twenty-one years ago)

nonsense jim, jacob is following all this with ease and aplomb aren't you jacob?

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 13 September 2004 04:38 (twenty-one years ago)

we could simplify it by saying most aussie music falls into three or four broad categories and all the subproliferation of genres is nonsense.

category 1: produced or remixed by col
