Mystikal and Roots Revivalism

So he's been billing himself as the new james brown for some time, but this new single takes neptunes-style beats, drops in more extended horn parts, a classic funk groove, and he doesn't do a scattershot rap so much as a scat-inflected blues holler. This is the closest thing I've heard in years to real roots r&b from the early years jazz/jump-blues crossover. Is this guy Fats Waller or Louis Armstrong or what?

Shake Ya New Answers!

He's a funny guy... In the same week he escorted a teenage terminally- ill cancer patient to an amusement park (a make-a-wish type thing), and was apparently quite a gentleman and made the girl's day; shortly after he was busted, speeding in a car thick with pot smoke and a pistol under the seat... a complex character.

I've yet to hear 'Bouncin Back' but he deserves awards for making Mariah's last single listenable.

Ah.. i like what i hear. I'd say this one ups the "Shake Ya' Ass" vibe.... the fade-in extended horns complement the tension of the groove perfectly. And yeah, the syncopated snare hits and call-response elements are certainly James Brown. You can hear somebody (Pharrell?) yelling in the background like some enthused player in Mystikal's funk session.

Oh yeah... why does he make that "door-creaking-open" sound? Is it to spite Master P's "Ughhhh" or something?

Oh my god I have heard this and IT IS BRILLIANT!!!

I WUV MYSTIKAL!!!

Tim, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What's the track's name?

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Bouncin' Back" and then something in parentheses I forget.

yeah, a big extended middle finger to those unhappy traditionalists who cannot accept how seamless the future and past can be put together, without it seeming camp or patronizing... or even that there's just no damned difference. It's strangely timeless if the mind just drifts without analysis.

this single gets my blood curling and wanting to punch something, kick over a chair, or do a quick shuffle to release the energy that it evokes.

I just downloaded this, and I'm shocked by how cool it is. Very much in the James Brown tradition.

And I like the way Mystikal has nominated himself as spokesperson for America. I wasn't expecting to like any of the "Go USA" stuff that would be released in the wake of 9/11, and Mystikal has proven me wrong fabulously.

Tim, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tim, it's funny you mention that because on the new MC Hammer 9/11 single "No Stoppin' Us - USA" Hammer sounds like an atrocious Mystikal impersonator.

Honda, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ilm finally contains the phrase 'on the new mc hammer single'!

ethan, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Good God, he hasn't, has he?

Robin Carmody, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

MC Hammer: last seen at a gallery annex at our college. I don't know what he was doing there, but it was advertised with xerox flyers and the place was small.

woke up in a cold sweat last night, because dream told me that "it is" was not put at the beginning of my last post on this thread. before "extended middle finger." The dream was right. I intend no aggression or hostility, but the song itself feels that way to those who choose to ignore it to pour over the links of the recent Bob Dylan album (one that am stilll eager to hear) to obscure influences of the musical past. Sorry. i is moron.

not that it matters.

New Hammer Single: It's weird because it's kinda bad, but it's kinda good too.

Sterling Clover, Friday, 7 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I JUST HEARD IT. I LOVE MYSTIKAL.
