william (william), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

hehhehheh....guess there is no love for this on ilm :(

william (william), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

This isn't Flux of Pink Indians, is it?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 03:18 (twenty-one years ago)

yessir.....shortened their name to grace us with this gem.

william (william), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 03:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, see, then it makes more sense (but I haven't heard this).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

That is a total classic!!! i actually don't have any Flux of PI stuff, just this album, and it sounds amazing. I wish some other of those old clang and bang industrial bands had more tunefulness & interesting non monotonous sounds like this does.

Queen Electric Butt Prober BZZT!! BZZZZZT!! (Queen Electric Butt Prober BZZ), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 07:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Punk + industrial + tribal bongoes & shit = unique like no other band I can think of except Killing Joke. alex in NYC do you like this album?

Queen Electric Butt Prober BZZT!! BZZZZZT!! (Queen Electric Butt Prober BZZ), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 07:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic. One of my all-time faves. On-U Sound Industrial Tao Of Pooh Dub Punk at it's finest from one of the great bands of the 80's. I've already talked about this album a couple times on ILM. This will be the last time. I was blown away when it came out and I first heard it.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

this album really is great, nothing else sounds like it. CCCCCC!

zappi (joni), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 10:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I did a double take when I saw this thread title. Talk about an unsung classic!! I've never met another living soul (or even corresponded with one) who understood just how uncommonly good this record was. I'm not really sure it can be compared to anything else, really and it sure as hell doesn't sound like Flux of Pink Indians. I was very disappointed that they didn't continue on as Flux. Wow it's been awhile since I've heard this, I'll have to pull it out. Cool fold out sleeve, too.

Bimble (bimble), Friday, 12 November 2004 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

ditto. although i suppose it is better to finish off with a "classic" release as opposed to a dud one. only heard about this by chance listening to brave new waves when brent banbury mentioned it as his favourite album of the year.

william (william), Friday, 12 November 2004 04:52 (twenty-one years ago)

What's Brave New Waves?

For me it was a total accident. I saw it in the used bin at a record shop, it was cheap and had an interesting sleeve, so I popped for it.

Bimble (bimble), Friday, 12 November 2004 04:56 (twenty-one years ago)

brave new waves is a great radio program on the cbc in canada that is heard weeknights after midnight.

william (william), Friday, 12 November 2004 06:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I've actually been meaning to get back to listening to internet radio of late and just hadn't had the time. I will check it out.

one year passes...
I just need to bump this thread again in response to the latest couple of sorta-political threads that got me excited.

I recall seeing this on CD. Can anyone confirm? Does One Little Indian still keep this in print, or have they just abandoned their earlier catalog?

sleeve (sleeve), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 05:41 (twenty years ago)

still in print at one little indian.

& to repeat,still classic.

drone/a/sore (drone/a/sore), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 06:17 (twenty years ago)

Excellent. My LP is a bit worn out from these last 19 years.

Just noticed it on emusic, and downloaded. Hadn't pulled out the vinyl in years. It's of it's time, but it's the best of it's time. Fantastic tribal percussion. Excellently out-of-place faux Miles Davis horns. In the context of today, it seems far more funky and less industrial than it did in it's day. I guess that's 'cause industrial got really stupid, and this is sharp stuff. As good as the best Fall of the era, and better than any Psychic TV I've heard.

bendy (bendy), Friday, 28 April 2006 16:32 (nineteen years ago)

I recall seeing this on CD.

I got it on CD in a sale somewhere. I don't really like it all that much.

They're Dairylea Mad, Them Kids (Dada), Friday, 28 April 2006 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

Damnit! STILL haven't re-heard this thing. Don't have the vinyl with me anymore either. Must d/l must d/l must d/l must d/l.

honorary joy division roadie (Bimble...), Friday, 28 April 2006 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

first thing issued on One Little Indian, if memory serves...

hank (hank s), Friday, 28 April 2006 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

yup. catalog # TPLP1. I love the winnie-the-pooh sticker on the vinyl.

sleeve (sleeve), Saturday, 29 April 2006 02:48 (nineteen years ago)

I ordered the CD out of laziness. See what dial up does to a person?

honorary joy division roadie (Bimble...), Saturday, 29 April 2006 03:41 (nineteen years ago)

Flux Of Pink Indian's Taking A Libery 7-inch was kind of the breeding ground for Uncarved Block. I remember when i bought that and being truly confused by its experimental nature and arty booklet. God, I loved that band. (even if i could never really listen to fucking cunts/fucking pricks more than once or twice. kind of a yes sir, i will situation there. i admired the effort though!)

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 29 April 2006 11:18 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah I remember buying that 7" too, now that I recall, but it was after I'd gotten into Uncarved Block. I was definitely confused by it!

honorary joy division roadie (Bimble...), Sunday, 30 April 2006 03:12 (nineteen years ago)

I got the CD!!! Hearing this again for the first time in eons!

"Thinkers and performers can never stop war or start peace, although they'd like to. Care for the wounded never halted any battle and artistry just collects the fragments into manageable chaos."

twelve years pass...

I really want to hear this:

Good old Scott recommended this album to me a couple of years ago and it justifies all the high praise in this thread. Go stream it if you've never heard it!

Ambient Police (sleeve), Monday, 24 June 2019 05:11 (six years ago)

yeah, that was a cracking read, ta for the pointer.

I had no idea AMS only produced a few of the tracks, as it all sounds very much an on-u album to me.

I recently had a brief email correspondence with Derek Birkett and in my last mail told him how incredible this record is and mentioned how much I'd be honoured to reissue it. I never heard back.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 00:21 (six years ago)

this is an amazing album, never heard it before

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 25 June 2019 02:16 (six years ago)

so glad you're getting to! it is a huge part of my "activist/punk grows up" DNA

Ambient Police (sleeve), Tuesday, 25 June 2019 02:18 (six years ago)

In my search for other records that stalk the same territory as Uncarved Block, I've pretty much only found Von Spar's 2007 debut. Similarly forgotten at this point!

does it need reissuing as its still in print and available via OLI website ?

mark e, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 14:45 (six years ago)

i guess we live in alternative vinyl / cd universes. cd is long dead to me so it wouldn't have crossed my mind to do a cd reissue, but i believe there is demand for a vinyl version. i reckon its very availability would turn a load of new listeners on to the greatness of this album.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 15:55 (six years ago)

ha.
indeed sir.
(and kind of suspected/realised you meant a vinyl edition despite the cd still being available - but thought i'd check)
