A gratuitous shout-out is necessary for Daniel Beddingfield hitting number one with the awesome "Gotta Get Thru This", which I have been waiting for months to explode onto the UK charts.

This is the thread for talking about how cool "Gotta Get Thru This" is, y'hear?

dont understand, the version i heard a while back was a lot slower, didnt even really sound like a garage tune, but the things thats on the radio is significantly faster....very strange.

not bad. i like 'da da da, dadada da bass' part. nto sure about the vocals. has his vice broken? met a coked up dj in a bar a few weeks ago who said he was warming up at 'crasher, and was mates with daniel beddingfield. btu this guy was a wanker so maybe daniel beddingfield (i thought it was benningfield) has bad taste in mates

I've been melting to "GGTT" in clubs for ages now, and I was sure of two things about it: 1) that it was a classic released about three years ago and I just missed it and 2) that it was yet another ace fluffy girly-garage vocal tune - like a harder, sharper prelude to Dionne Rakeem's "Sweeter Than Wine", or something.

So yeah, what Tim said: a total triumph, and the best way of being utterly wrong about everything ever, ever.

Okay, let's make this a Taking Sides now:

The original: pingingly sharp beats, nicely restrained vocals, gorgeous and totally unexpected sitar-and-strings section.

The "Human Beatbox" remix: shockingly simple, but blessed with an awsome groove: the melody is the rhythm, and vice versa, and Dan's vocals are higher, tremulous and woozy.

FITE!

Out of interest, which is the one that's being played in the UK?

Tim, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

UPDATE: The "D'nD Radio Edit" seems to be a slightly glossier version of the "Human Beatbox" remix with added chorus, and I'm assuming this is the radio version. Which is good because it thoroughly outclasses the (still quite good) original.

Actually, I've just seen Bedingfield on TOTP and CD:UK and he's an utter cretin: imagine a cross between Craig David at his most unctuous and annoying, and Jay Kay (note: not Jason Kaye)'s facsimile of great black pop, and you're getting there.

So. Great tune, crap pop star. Damn.

Chris, Saturday, 8 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well he's the same age as me and, like me, was educated at home, which makes me *very* envious.

Great song.

Somewhat annoying after repeated exposure, but it certainly has that great garage knack of simultaneously sounding nervous, twitchy, and stop-start and yet absolutely slinky-smooth. So while I may not be rushing out to buy it, feeble narrowminded indie kid that I am, I too am very jealous.

How much credibility, o gathered garage connoisseurs of ILM, do Misteeq have on the UKG scene? I am curious, not because I particularly dislike them but more because a comment about their greatness in the NME a while ago particularly annoyed me and still bothers me whenever I hear them. Not to say it wasn't true, but I'd like to think it might not be. More detail will possibly follow if I can find a way to phrase the question without sounding like a total fool even to myself, although probably not here, don't want to hijack threads.

UK Garage doesn't think "cred" exists. Good.

Sterling Clover, Sunday, 9 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am in Australia = I am not part of the garage scene, but I think Misteeq are excellent. Lickin' On Both Sides is probably my favourite R&B album this year after Aaliyah's. Somewhat amazingly it's only one duff track on it, plus you get a couple of great garage cuts (including a So Solid collabo, which may have helped in the cred department).

Does no one here ever read popbitch? Daniel B, from a weird fundamentalist Christian family, is an endless source of anecdotes regarding his, er, strange attitude to difficult subjects like rape, race, cursing and humanity in general. (Many of which can be vouched for by an FOAF who once worked with him). Try 'DNA Algorithim' (did I spell that correctly?) on a google search for a look at his previous 'family' band, setting a Xian path for dance music. Haven't ever knowingly heard the single , so I'll pass no opinion on that. Though I don't suppose my life will be affected either way.

It just occurred to me that "Gotta Get Thru This" might be interpreted as a religious song. Suddenly my ardour has cooled.

Tim, Sunday, 9 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But Tim, I want to take you higher.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 9 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

OK, I heard this for first time during *that* TOTP appearance. I think he's a great singer, and he performed it pretty well. As a result, I am more impressed with the song than I probably would have been if I'd heard it on the radio first. Pretty cool, then.

"GGTT" is the sort of record with which Jacko SHOULD have made a comeback. He would have been worshipped all over again.

Suspect, however, that album (if any) will be full of usual "grown- up" AoR as per Craig David. But maybe he'll prove me wrong.

three weeks pass...
Personally I think this song is criss. When I first heard it about two months ago in the Garage Natinon compilation before it was released i new it was gonna be massive. And after being number one for a few weeks, it is set to become number one AGAIN after selling about 2 thousand more copies then Nicole and Robbie. Lets hope he brings out some more phat beats. Selecta!
