Great records that are selling used on Amazon for less than $2?

So I just picked up that 1st Radar Brothers record on Restless for $1.50 and I was wondering if you folks had other recommendations for other good records that you can get for dirt cheap because, a) the record was a commercial flop, b)the label sent out way too many promo copies.
Here are some examples:
Gallon Drunk - From the Heart of Town (is this worth 0.29 cents?)
Mia Doi Todd - Golden State (0.68 cents, i'm not a fan but maybe some of you are)
Bob Dylan - Love and Theft (1.88 for the orig. non-remastered version)
Pooh Sticks - Million Seller (1.50 buys you some wishful thinking on their part!)

Any other suggestions are appreciated. Thanks...

Gallon Drunk - From the Heart of Town (is this worth 0.29 cents?)

Absolutely.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

what you mean is 29 cents, not .29 cents.

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

[/pedantry]

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

btw, where is the cents symbol on a keyboard?

ianinportland (ianinportland), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

isnt it lame that it doesnt exist? i know!

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Pooh Sticks - Million Seller (1.50 buys you some wishful thinking on their part!)

far from their best but worth every penny of that. it opens with a nice one-two punch of the title ditty and "the world is turning on" and then gets kinda dicey, but you've already got your $1.50 worth by that point so if you like any other tracks you've made a profit.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

xxpost:
back in the typewriter days, you'd have to place a single quote mark over a period to make an exclamation point. Now, nodoby uses pennies anymore.

sexyDancer, Tuesday, 14 September 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for the feedback on the cent symbol. Now everyone get back on topic and give me recommendations for how to spend my 2 bucks!

ianinportland (ianinportland), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

The absolute winner is the person who can give me a recommendation for a good, quality album that is selling for 1 cent on Amazon...

ianinportland (ianinportland), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

The only problem with this is that once you add the shipping & handling charges per album, they're back up into the normal used album price range.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Amazon S+H is only $2.50 so that ain't no big thing... But yes, you are right. I left that out of the initial equation. Sorry to mislead anyone...

ianinportland (ianinportland), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't checked Amazon, but you can usually pick up the Figgs' Lo-Fi at Society High for less than $2 these days—and that thing's worth every penny.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

You are correct, Johnny! That's $1.78 on Amazon (before s+h)... Thanks for the suggestion.

ianinportland (ianinportland), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Missy albums and late 90s R&B (basically tons of Timbaland stuff) is all available for less than 2 bucks.

Reed Moore (diamond), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought this thread would take off much more than it has. Do you people not like a bargain? Does no one buy music on Amazon?

ianinportland (ianinportland), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I found another one: Illyah Kuryahkin - Thirtycabminute ($1.42)

ianinportland (ianinportland), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I got my copy of Graeme Downes's Hammers and Anvils on Amazon for 77 cents, and I'm pretty sure there was another copy that was around 89 cents at the time. I think the Verlaines had an album or two in that range as well.

I'm definitely a fan of the Amazon bargains!

JC-L (JC-L), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, that Illyah Kuryahkin album is ace.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

haha - oh yeah, that reminds me, the Cake Kitchen. I bought one of their later records (not this one) on Amazon for like a buck once. I have this one too but I can't remember what it's like. It's probably worth the $3+ though.

Reed Moore (diamond), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I never look at Amazon for music because I'm still infuriated by their insistence that based on my musical preferences I would love the Shins.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

just tell them "not interested".

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I have, but they want to drive me insane like in Gaslight.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Leon, I'm guessing from your musical tastes that you will also probably love this band Modest Mouse or another one called Iron & Wine!

ianinportland (ianinportland), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Argh.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe Belle and Sebastian then?

ianinportland (ianinportland), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

"it's the shins. have you heard of them? this song will change your life."

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

if lloyd dobbler was in high school today, would he serenade ione skye with the shins?

ianinportland (ianinportland), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

No, he'd just use a more recent PG song, like "Steam".

Vinnie (vprabhu), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

or "Kiss That Frog"

Vinnie (vprabhu), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I got R. Kelly's R in R and B collection for $1.98 used on there.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Love and Theft for $1.88 is a steal.

Officer Pupp, Tuesday, 14 September 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Thou - Put Us In Tune for .79
Magic Dirt - Friends In Danger .59

Both are fantastic albums. First one's cheap cause the record company went out of business and now only Belgians know who Thou is. 2nd one's cheap 'cause Warner printed one billion copies before realizing that MD weren't going to be the next Sonic Youth.

dlp9001, Tuesday, 14 September 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

The first five Poster Children records are going for less than $2.50.

ianinportland (ianinportland), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, it sure is great to have a computer once again. Anyway, I recommend A.R. Kane's compilation 'Americana,' usually available for chump change on Amazon (or, failing that, buy.com).

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Consonant - S/T ($1.00) members of Mission of Burma, Bedhead, Come.

ianinportland (ianinportland), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

And speaking of AR Kane, you can get Butterfly Child's Soft Explosives record for $1.74.

ianinportland (ianinportland), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

A mighty fine purchase.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i got moonshake eva luna for less than two dollars. also insides euphoria. i'm not telling you some of the ones i haven't bought yet.

Woah. That is a bargain. I lurve Junior Citizen & Daisy Chain Reaction tons and tons.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

agreed. i think i got daisy chain reaction for like a dollar on ebay.

artdamages (artdamages), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Kowanko's debut album starts at 17 cents. This is easily one of my top 5 90's albums no lie. Nasal singer-songwriter type guy with lo-key Beatlesque pop (think White Album) and some viciously depressing lyrics. Swear I can listen to this 50 time in a row and still pick up new interpretations and meaning from his stuff.

Jeannette Katt's Pink Mischief starts at 51 cents. A wonderful early 90's pop record, I wrote a huge review of it for Delusions of Adequacy.

I own ten copies of these discs each, no lie.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

whoa. I impolore anyone who reads this to pick up Sardina's Presents which is a mind boggling steal at just $0.94!!!

frankE (frankE), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Suddenly Tammy!'s first album always held a soft spot in my heart. It's selling for $1.57. Their second album, which I never heard, is selling for 36 cents.

ianinportland (ianinportland), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

the 14 fine songs on JZ Barrell's Here's the Surprise can be had for less than the price of one lousy iTunes download. why is this CD, which grants Michael Penn control of the Elephant6 junkyard orchestra, going for 48 pennies? grab it while you can and love it as much as i do.

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

meanwhile... wtf?!

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

This album by Grace Braun (of DQE) is quite nice and is selling for just a little more than 2 bucks. Stellar voice on that one there...

ianinportland (ianinportland), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG WTF!?!? You mean my copy of Cake is going for that much?!?!

righteousmaelstrom, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Just because people are selling it for that much doesn't mean that people are buying it for that much...

I posted a copy of the first Radar Bros. EP for sale on Amazon a few months ago because the only other copy was marked at $90.00. I thought I'd be generous so I listed mine for $85.00 and guess what -- nobody bought it.

ianinportland (ianinportland), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, if'n I was going to sell it, I might put it up on Ebay and see what happens. That's a big if though.

ianinportland: Portland, OR? Portland, ME? Portland, somewhere else?

righteousmaelstrom, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

If you want to make some quick money and you're not a big Richard Thompson fan, it seems that many albums in his catalog are selling on Amazon for around 20-40 dollars. You could probably unload your copies pretty quickly if you undercut the competition by a few bucks. It's probably a more realistic scheme than getting someone to buy the Trashcan Sinatra's for 40 bucks...

ianinportland (ianinportland), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Portland, ORegon. Ebay's such a crapshoot. Prices fluctuate too much for my taste. I like Amazon because you don't have to worry about how much an item might sell for. You just look at the other prices and price your item around the same amount and then if someone wants it for that price they'll buy it. Simple.

ianinportland (ianinportland), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Where are you, Righteous?

ianinportland (ianinportland), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Suddenly Tammy's 2nd album is better than their first! "Beautiful Dream" and "River Run" are standouts, on par with "Plant Me." Much cleaner production on We Get There ... and the songs are a bit more engaging lyrically. I'm still bitterly disappointed that Warner Bros is holding the 3rd lp ransom, likely it will never be released.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

P-town as well. I live in SE.

righteousmaelstrom, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

The Nightblooms' first album (the one marked "live" that isn't) is $1.75.

Royal Trux's "Thank You" currently at $.99. Such a bargain!

dlp9001, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I was gonna mention that Nightblooms album but I thought no one would care... I haven't listened to it in ages and I'm not sure if it stands the test of time. Does it?

ianinportland (ianinportland), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Righteous - Up until about a year ago, I lived at the corner of SE 60th and Belmont right across from Mt. Tabor Park. Now I'm in NE near Alberta.

ianinportland (ianinportland), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a big, pretty picture of the Jackpot Records storefront.

Comme personne (common_person), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

You can't get too many great records selling used for less than $2 at Jackpot! The closest I have come to getting music for that cheap at Jackpot is the free live shows that I have seen there...

Comme - Do you live across the street from Jackpot or are you saying that you have a photograph of the storefront?

ianinportland (ianinportland), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

A photograph. I've never been to Portland. You can tell me more about the store, though, so I can seem knowledge when people ask me about the photo.

Comme personne (common_person), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, another great record you can always find cheap: Masters of Reality's Sunrise on the Sufferbus (though in this instance it is failing the $2 and under test; just wait awhile)

Reed Moore (diamond), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I was gonna mention that Nightblooms album but I thought no one would care... I haven't listened to it in ages and I'm not sure if it stands the test of time. Does it?

one year passes...

What's the cheapest you can sell a CD on Amazon, without losing money, assuming postage for a CD costs £0.90 and you're not able to just throw your packages in your work post?

djh, Monday, 26 October 2009 15:46 (sixteen years ago)

About a dollar. Amazon gives you $3 for shipping, and shipping a CD first class usually only costs around $1.75 + the cost of the envelope. So you usually make a little bit on shipping. But then they charge a $1 commission fee, plus a percentage of the cost of the item. So if you sold an item for one dollar, Amazon, your revenue would be $4.00 ($3 shipping plus the one dollar) minus $2 for shipping ($1.75 for shipping, around 25 cents for padded envelope) minus $1 amazon commission minus about 10 cents (the percentage commission, usually 6-15% the cost of the item).

4.00 - 2.00 - 1,00 - 0.10 = 90 cents.

The question is how much the time and effort is worth to you. You can technically make a profit selling things for about a dollar or less, but even when you've got the whole process streamlined, it takes a decent amount of time to ship stuff. By the time you print out the form, find the CD, seal it up, write the address, go to the post office or put stamps on it and put it out, it's been ten minutes. I've been selling CDs on Amazon for almost a year now, and I don't sell anything unless it's more than $4.75 or so.
