What exactly is XTC that can make other bands the _____ XTC?

This exercise can be playes with any band. This came about partially because I was amused at the fight created by the other thread and partially because even though this type of thing is now looked down upon as criminally-lazy crit shorthand, it's also massively fun to do and helps underline synergies between bands that you may not have considered as having a relationship before.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I really meant for someone to actually outline what it is about XTC that they're applying to (or inferring from) other bands. I have a general idea, but I want someone to be specific.

do XTC fans love "the ledge" and other l.buckingham new-wavey stuff? that seems to fill the same role in my mind as XTC does for its fans (buzzy, quirky, wired, weird, melodic).
