What's the most hilariously dumb thing ever uttered by a musician?

There was an interview with Britney Spears done after she'd done some HBO ads for her show in Las Vegas wearing a white jumpsuit, and someone asked her if she was an Elvis fan. "Yes, I am a really, really big Elvis fan. And I think the real reason why we did the whole Elvis thing is because, you know, he's from Vegas."

Okay, Britney's not really a musician, but I still practically fell off my chair laughing at that. I think I might actually be a bit of a Britney fan now. It was even better when they asked her about her cover of "I Love Rock'N'Roll" and she started gushing about Pat Benatar.

He might as well be from Vegas. Anyway, I don't think this question could ever be answered, as the candidate lines are oh-so-many (and really, La Brit's utterances don't seem hilariously dumb, just sorta misinformed) and narrowing it down to one would be hard.

If we're talking about hilariously dumb things said by musicians via direct performance, though...probably Terri Nunn introducing her allegedly deep and meaningful song about the LA riots at a benefit show in 1992. I seem to remember most of the audience laughing along with me.

what about that mariah carrey statement about the ethiopians?

chaki, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nearly anything Krist Novoselic has ever said.

That recent comment by Beyonce about the Beatles doing solo projects and getting back together "stronger than ever" is quite duuuuuuuuuh.

[STAR X, told of death of King of Jordan]: [spiel in re Michael Jordan's qualitites and contributions]

ps i think this snickering coems dangerously close to private eye's "dumb britain" colum,n, where they laugh at some quizshow competitor for not knowing anything abt shakespeare say, but could not themselves (eg pe) name a singleNSync hit.

Not necessarily dumb, but incomprehensible quotes from Bob Dylan.

Dave225, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

carey quote = urban myth.

RW, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the Carey quote originated from a comedy website of some kind.

I thought Metallica sounded pretty stupid when they defended high CD prices - comparing themselves to plumbers and such. Actually, there are very few musicians who are actually worth reading in interviews. Having known a few, it's shocking how dumb a lot of these 'creative' people are.

Peter Buck : "I AM R.E.M"

A relevant link to an article from the (dead? Scott P?) Stopsmiling.net. Choice excerpts: "In case you missed it, last week Eve declared that she "didn't know there were black people outside America." and, Eve again, "You’d be surprised at the number of black kids in America who don’t know that black people live in other countries. Even me. I was shocked to hear a black person speaking another language."

"All popular artists get caught between making records and making music. If you're lucky, sometimes it's the same thing." - Bruce Springsteen

the eve quote is understandable, american black kids are taught the rest of the world is either european or asian.

Are they not taught about slavery & black people being brought over from Africa? Or do they think that the slave trade took everyone from Africa?
It's inconceivable that anyone (adult) could be completely unaware.

Dave225, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Eve thing sounds less like "I truly didn't know" and more like "I suppose I knew, but it had never sunk in deeply enough for me to really know."

Nitsuh, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Springsteen quote sounds reasonable enough to me.

Sean, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Indeed, insightful even (re: Springsteen quote).

Jordan, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wait, I've got it: "I can't get no satisfaction."

Nitsuh, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I feel the same way when I read that Eye column sometimes, Mark.

Nik Kershaw instructing listeners to the Bruno Brookes show, 17 winters ago, to go and find out what Dadaism was so that they could understand the meaning of "The Riddle" must come close. Also Neil Hannon saying that we ought to have "learnt something" simply through having seen the video for that unspeakable "Frog Princess" song he did.

Robin Carmody, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I dunno, Elvis Costello's comments about Ray Charles were pretty hilariously dumb.

Who was that other SAW muppet from Neighbours....er....Jason Donovan! I quote

"If dolphins were like people I'd want to be one of them"

This statement makes no sense whatsoever, on any level etc.

Norman Phay, Saturday, 8 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'like people' = walking on two legs, breathing air, owning Beatles records etc. Dolphins are reknowned for their (supposed? has anyone here even been attacked by one?) friendliness. So, it kinda makes sense, I think.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Saturday, 8 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

even=ever=forever ever?= forever ever?

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Saturday, 8 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Personally, I think that Eve quote is beautiful and sad, and it demonstrates the value of honesty. That Mariah thing - she didn't say it, a spoof website did it as a humour piece and it was picked up as being something she really said. ('Oh, I do feel sorry for the Ethiopians with flies walking over them and everything, but it would be great to be that skinny' or something.)

This band called 'The Rock and Roll Machine' in Auckland set their guitars on fire using a can of lighter fluid as a starter. In an interview afterwards they said 'none of that stuff is planned, man, it's completely spontaneous.' As the can of lighter fluid would suggest.
