I'll ruin the Hot Snakes for you

The singer sounds like Dexter Holland from the Offspring.

I can't get past it. I love this new album, but since I've realized this, I'm enjoying it way less.

And now you will too.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 03:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Why not just assume that Dexter is trying to sound like Mr. Froberg?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 03:23 (twenty-one years ago)

shouldn't this be on the noise board?

MATH BLASTER MYSTERY! (ex machina), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 03:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Eh, he sounds more like Greg Sage from the Wipers. At least I'll keep telling myself that.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 03:24 (twenty-one years ago)

that's total bullshit. dexter holland would never sing "i'd cut off my dick for creative control." nice try, though.

f ath, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 03:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe not, but that song in particular is a good example. It's pretty dead on.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

right on. i'm not working either. But once you do, holla

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 04:07 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha this revelation doesn't bother me one bit (makes me feel better for pointing out how Counting Crows "Couldn't You Wait?" is). Good call, Roger!

Can't wait to see 'em live in a month!

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 04:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Both Froberg and Holland sound like the singer of Die Kreuzen circa Die Kreuzen and October File. There. You can all stop mutually puking now.

Fuckups, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 06:50 (twenty-one years ago)

anthony, you were totally otm with that Duritz / Silkworm thing, too, so we're even! :)

But i don't think anything could ruin that song for me!

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 07:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Both Froberg and Holland sound like the singer of Die Kreuzen circa Die Kreuzen and October File

C'mon, Holland sounds exactly like "Weird Al".

SIGH. I AM NOT FEELING TEH NEW HOT SNAKES. THINK ABOUT CARBS IS WEIRD.

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

FUCK THE VOCALS, MUSICALLY IT'S PRETTY BORING.

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

w/r/t ddb: :-(

I always thought that Rick sounded like Dez Cadena when he was "on".

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Well this kind of ties in. After one listen, I'm pretty disappointed with the new Silkworm. The songs are all really long and repetitive. "Italian Platinum" got my hopes up, but this is back to Blueblood and Lifestyle. And the cover art fucking blows (tho this is no surprise for SKWM).

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

oh

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I really wanted this record to destroy, maybe it's a grower?!?!?!

Reflex sounds ok. Uptempo rocker.

I miss DLJ.

sigh

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

got the new silkworm yesterday and was pretty weirded out and disgusted because i loved italian platinum so much. disappointed after one listen. they're assholes for letting me hear "don't look back" first and then tricking me into expecting an album full of tense rockers like that one. that one is a fucking gem.

you're all on crack about the new hot snakes. musically disappointing? this album sounds like it was stitched from the musical fabric of the most white-hot moments of yank crime. somebody pissed in rick's cheerios for sure. what's so weird about "think about carbs"?

f ath, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

THIS SOUNDS NOTHING LIKE YANK CRIME. LETS GET THAT RIGHT OFF THE PLAYING FIELD.

what's so weird about "think about carbs"?
dood, it's called think about carbs. it's an atkins diet manifesto with NO hints of irony.

think, about your body.
think, about your weight
think, your constitution.
let me guess your fate.

OMG. ITS AWFUL.

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

to be honest, his lyrics have always been a little uh, ???

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

his lyrics have always been super cool if that's what you mean. like having an emotional breakdown at a city council meeting.

think about carbz is anti-atkins. READ BETWEEN THE LINES OK. it's about ignoring health in general for an americanized version of it that later causes heart failure and it's great alright.

and yeah when i said yank crime i admit i was thinking of "golden brown" exclusively. because one of the songs on the new one reminded me of that. it's faster and meaner than the last one so therefore that equates to sounding like yank crime to me. and for fuck's sake, what's the point in even comparing it? DRIVE LIKE JEHU IS DEAD AND BURIED. what we have now is the hot snakes, and damn, have you heard "salton city?" wow! that's a great song! what a great, interesting, thoughtful, nice band of folks! have you heard "hatchet job?" it's so great!

new silkworm still sucks tho

f ath, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

DOOD. HAVING. A. SONG. ABOUT. AITKENS. PRO/CON. IS. JUST. STUPID.

OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN ALREADY TAUGHT ME ABOUT CONDITIONING MY BODY.

I DONT CARE TO READ BETWEEN THE LINES, KTHX. I THINK FROBERG'S LYRICS ARE PRETTY CUT AND DRY (NO LINES TO READ BETWEEN) AS WELL AS PRETTY BAD AT TIMES, BUT HE MAKES UP FOR IT IN DELIVERY.

AND I WILL ALWAYS COMPARE HOT SNAKES TO JEHU. THATS JUST THE WAY IT IS SUCKA.

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

oh.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

ddb is actually a nice guy in person.

I'll ruin ddb for you, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

DDB is not a nice guy; he doesn't like pasta.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't care if ddb is a nice guy in person, or what. i still want to fistfight him now. come to san diego, that's where i am.

NO BUT IN ALL SERIOUSNESS atkins is fucking stupid and if rick wants to take a detour from his normally rather abstract lyrical style to write a song tackling a rather indicative element of the brainless landscape of contemprary american consciousness, i say "you go, girlfriend!" to him and then i turn it up to 11 and chug a beer.

f ath, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i haven't kept up with Silkworm in a long time - Italian Platinum was good, you say?

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Italian Platinum, while not as good as Libertine or Firewater, is pretty damn solid, and has a few tracks that measure up to some of their best stuff. It's really front-loaded, so try listening to it somewhere and seeing if the first few songs appeal to you.

I kind of liked the weird mostly acoustic song with the slowed-down vocals on the new one, just because it was them doing something a little different, but then I realized it didn't have any melody at all.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

"lisetning to it 'somewhere'" - classic!

But slsk isn't working for me right now

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, if you're downloading, look for "I Hope U Don't Survive," it's easily the best song on the album. Why do Silkworm always put the best song first? Seriously, at least since Firewater:
Firewater - "Nerves," arguably the best song
Developer - ok, I don't remember what the first song was on this
Blueblood - "EFF," EASILY the best song
Lifestyle - "Treat the New Guy Right," Again, easily the best song
Italian Platinum - "I Hope U Don't Survive," Probably the best song
It'll Be Cool - "Don't Look Back," I'm pretty sure it's the best song

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn it, I didn't even know there WAS a new Hot Snakes. Is it out for real or just on S'S33k?

Taxi Dancing in the Soft Prison (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

taxi, it comes out october 5th.

n/a, the first song on lifestyle was "contempt" though, and "miracle mile" was so obviously the best song on firewater.

i like how this is both a hot snakes and silkworm thread. can it be a silver jews and a the fall thread, too? i'd never leave.

f ath, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, well, Lifestyle ruins my theory, cuz "Treat the New Guy Right" is awesome.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Holy Jesus, is there a new Silver Jews record too?!?!

Taxi Dancing in the Soft Prison (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Ask Rick Fork what he thinks about the singing abilities of the guy from the Offspring and whether or not he detects any of that "Offspring style" in his own singing.

Lingbert, Thursday, 16 September 2004 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

write me back, darren

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 16 September 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

this album is awesome: dumb lyrics, relentless instrumentation.

ask Rick Fork...which Ginn brother has had more INFLUENCE.

ddb (ddb), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll assume I'm the only person who's even more excited for this album because there's a song about carbohydrates on it (my favorite Rick Fork lyric ever is "luau! luau! luau!").

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

and I don't even care if it's "go atkins!" or "down with atkins!" I just think it's funny.

this thread has inspired me to put on Automatic Midnight. "10th Planet" specifically.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I believe I'll be screaming for this one.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

anthony: TE AND hot snakes? you bet your sweet bippy i am!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

TE is playing too!?! I had no idea! Holy shit.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

that means I might get in free!

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

no, they're not. i thought they were but then i remembered TE are touring with them on the west coast. argh. i wish they were opening that bill. sorry to get your hopes up.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

haha yeah I knew about the west coast deal (which freaks me out since they seem to exclusively open for bands I love). No real biggie, I saw TE last time I was in town.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, this record is great for running at the gym, especially when "think about carbs" comes on. ha!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

for the record the best song on the new silkworm is "insomnia" -- also the new album is better than the last. thanks.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

five years pass...

naw the best song on that silkworm album is "shitty little yacht." i wish that album had been better.

iiiijjjj, Wednesday, 23 September 2009 04:05 (sixteen years ago)

hot snakes were so fuckin good. driving around listening to OVER THE EDGE today and feeling MEAN, thinking about greg sage. do you think he was a mean dude ever? i bet he was never mean ever.

iiiijjjj, Wednesday, 23 September 2009 04:07 (sixteen years ago)

heard he was kinda a prick to be honest.

ian, Wednesday, 23 September 2009 05:11 (sixteen years ago)

i'm thinking of the picture of him with his dog that was supposed to be the original cover of Youth Of America (i think? it's in the liner notes of the box set) and seconding "i bet he was never mean ever."

cwkiii, Thursday, 24 September 2009 23:45 (sixteen years ago)
