The Blue Meanies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

God damnit, I've been listening to them so much lately and it really pisses me off that they lingered in obscurity while cockmonkeys like Mighty Mighty Bosstones took off.

The Sound -> Big in Belgium (much like the band in Singles - heh)

Evil Superstars -> They weren't good, they were great.

Senser..played the Stoke Newington* Festival 2 months ago.
Sadly I missed them but they were the soundtrack to my late teens..Dub War as well although I only liked the single of the album.

*Stoke newington = Borough in north east London

Danny boy, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Strike It! Great tune.

I had no idea Senser were still going.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

defunkt (who, by virtue of being defunct, are no longer defunkt)

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Fudge Tunnel were fucking great. I have Creep Diets on my iPod. Alex Newport's new band, Theory Of Ruin, are pretty good, too.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Senser and Dub War had lots of success, right? They were all over the media and playing on the big festival circuit circa 1995...

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The Aquabats

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Although I kinda hate them for making me respect Travis Barker (he who drums for Blink 182). He plays the everloving FUCK out of the drums with the Aquabats.

Yeah, but they didn't last very long and didn't sell that many records.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

at the risk of opening up this thread to all of your friends' bands, which is not my intention, i offer these two stellar examples from the late '80s early '90s jersey shore pre-grunge grunge scene, who didn't have any success at all and are now defunct:

nudeswirl
big nurse

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

No-Man. They must have had some little success, but I knew nothing about these guys, and bought "Loveblows and Lovecries" thinking it was the Roger Miller project. My mistake, and how happy I am to have made it.

briania (briania), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Dub Sex
King of the Slums
Man From Delmonte

all from manchester funnily enough..

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Fudge Tunnel once when I was a wee youngun, they seriously fucked some shit up.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

No-Man. They must have had some little success, but I knew nothing about these guys, and bought "Loveblows and Lovecries" thinking it was the Roger Miller project. My mistake, and how happy I am to have made it.

No-Man's still going strong. and if they've disbanded since the recent Together We're Stranger, many of the offshoots remain active. take a look at Tim Bowness' BurningShed label.

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

incidentally, does anyone need the Loveblows and Lovecries CD? i've got two extra copies - one US (with the bonus tracks) and one UK (without). either's up for the asking to the first person to reply here (not to my e-mail).

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I've compounded my ignorance, then. What a great album.

Candyland!

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

beta band, dismemberment plan

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

don't look at it that way, briania. think about all the (even better) No-Man (and related) music you now know to hunt down! i'd suggest that you start with Flowermouth, Returning Jesus, and the Taste EP. each No-Man album seems that much more refined than the last. the trend has generally paid off. though i think Stranger was a little too slick. but i don't envy them having to follow up the perfect Returning Jesus.

The Distractions

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost. I'll be digging deeper that for sure. Actually, my Loveblows is on cassette, and I'd be up for a disc of it, if the offer stands.

briania (briania), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Comsat Angels

Michael Philip Philip Philip Annoyman (Ferg), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

e-mailed you. still one copy of L&L left. anyone? anyone?

edit: Heaven Taste (lost a word back there). what a great EP: a little L&L-style N-M; a preview of Flowermouth-style N-M; a sensitive Nick Drake cover ("Road"); and a stray 22min Bass Communion cut. all EPs should be so substantial.

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The Dambuilders. The first time I saw or even knew about their last disk was when I found it in the $1 bin at Moby Disk. Ouch.

Railroad Jerk
Tricky Woo (but they're back, and possibly LESS successful!)

Huk-L, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Compulsive Gamblers. There's a new record out on SFTRI, but it was recorded in 1999; they're not back together.

The only record of theirs worth having is:

Thea (Thea), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Senser at Feet First at the Camden Palace some years ago and the bloke had left and it was just the girl singing, which is clearly wack. Compulsion were a good band in the 90's but are now defunct.

How did we get this far down the thread without anyone mentioning Disco Inferno?

Dr Benway (dr benway), Thursday, 16 September 2004 06:47 (twenty-one years ago)

God.

A handful of albums, none of which reached the majesty of the 'Breach Birth' ep, and some dates supporting Godflesh (in fact, I think their only non-London shows were on the Head Of David/Godflesh/God tour).

The Monochrome Set, Gallon Drunk (or are they still going?)

neil tacus (tacit), Thursday, 16 September 2004 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

gallon drunk were one of the best live acts I've ever seen. They did a few albums and soundtracks for films. bumped into James J at a OutHud gig last year, but didn't feel like asking him what he'd been up to recently.

nick.K (nick.K), Thursday, 16 September 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Daisy Chainsaw
Candyskins
Dr Phibes House Of Wax Equations
Mega City Four
New Fast Automatic Daffodils

I am in an early 1990s ITV Chart Show indie chart timewarp and I cannot be stopped. Those bands may not actually have been "good". What about dEUS? A classic mid-90s band who never got past number 41 in the singles charts.

John Allison (John Allison), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

papas fritas. and forget i ever said they were "okayish"

marcdrums (marcdrums), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow. Daisy Chainsaw. "Love Your Money", "Dog With Sharper Teeth" and "I Feel Insane" on Eleventeen all still make it onto mixtapes I make.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 16 September 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick K, James J from Gallon Drunk is with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds now, replacing the departed Blixa B.

How about the Loud Family? Melody Maker album of the year (or close) in 1993. Band most likely to limp onto critics best ever top 1000s (big Star Style) ten years after their death. I don't think any of their albums are worse than great.

Cactus World News

Why they didn't sell millions of copies of their 1986 rock masterpiece: Urban Beaches - remains one of the biggest mysteries of the 80s.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 17 September 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Another band starved of radio 1 daytime airplay: The Bolshoi

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 17 September 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

That Petrol Emotion - should have more daytime support on Radio 1 to make: Big Decision a top 40 hit single.

Senser are still alive and well. Fourth album is in the pipeline. Their website is pretty flashy too.( www.senser.co.uk )

Pet Lamb, Blaggers I.T.A., Dig, God Machine, et al. All sadly missed.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 2 February 2006 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

if the L&L is still available I'd be keen to have a listen. I've heard a lot about them but never actually heard them (Japan involvement has me curious).

as for the topic, ditto on The Sound and Comsat Angels (just glad there are rereleases).

patita (patita), Thursday, 2 February 2006 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

Also, The New Lows (not the band who's spamming myspace)--a punk/hardcore trio who only released a self-titled album. Can't find any more info about them, and couldn't before the new band popped up.

patita (patita), Thursday, 2 February 2006 20:43 (nineteen years ago)
