Should I go and see Coolio?!?!?

He's playing at our local University next month and some weird part of my brain wants to go and see him. (I'm not familiar with any of his stuff other than "Gangsta's Paradise".) Should I bother? Is there any entertainment to be had from the live Coolio experience? It's only five quid I think.

The only time I've seen Coolio since "Gangsta's Paradise" was a hit was his appearance on Fear Factor. I had no clue he was still out doing shows.

I think you should go. Maybe he'll play the theme tune to Keenan and Kel.

he might make you put your hands in the air, insisting you wave them like you just don't care (or other hip hop show tropes, I don't know).

I'm rilly hoping it'll be a full on "wave your hands in the air" type show, but I'm worried it'll be a 10 minute "Greatest Hit + 2" PA. The thought of Coolio even being in Hull is, frankly, pretty freaking surreal.

He was on the German version of Reborn in the USA.

I think he was beaten by the lead singer of Smokie, they of "Living Next Door to Alice" fame.

he was actually pretty effective in small doses before he went solo, when he was with WC and the MAAD Circle(sounds like Dub helped him on some rhymes tho). His first album had some bright spots(County Line, Fantastic Voyage, I Remember; all the singles, basically) but then he got exposed to the mainstream with "G's P" and that song about AIDS and he didn't have near the skills to survive that kind of scrutiny. The last thing worth hearing is his verses on WC's "In a Twist", a funny crime caper story, circa 95. See him.

Coolio? You mean that guy that made a cameo in Leprechaun 5: Lep in the Hood? Is that the same one?

But honestly, if it's under $15 and you don't have to drive to get there, I'd say absolutely, go.

If you do go, be sure to post a review on ILM. No less than 500 words, please.

Dude, just go. If you aren't doing the laundry or your hair and have the cash, go. Why not, you know?

I was supposed to see Coolio on probably this same tour but it all fell through. He was staying at the hotel where I work, though, and by all accounts (I wasn't working that night) he was INCREDIBLY nice. The security guy (a fan) arranged to keep the riff-raff and hangers-on (there were many!) from following Coolio up the elevator, and Coolio showed sincere appreciation for this little favor, to the point that they ended up hanging out all night talking about cars and smoking up. Or so the story goes. Anyway, I just wanted to give him props for apparently taking the decline of his popularity in stride and keeping it real and so on.
